A Very Vanilla Mix from London’s Lesser Panda

Received this sexy little mix from London art rocker sweeties George and Fenner from Lesser Panda, who we featured - gosh, was it only back in Janurary? - to celebrate their new release, single “Carousel/Ghostdance” which debuts on 13th October 2008 !

If you get gooey and nostalgic over the great tunes from the 80s like the Cure, Talking Heads, Smiths and Psychadelic Furs, you’ll LOVE Lesser Panda - and you can catch a sneak of “Carousel” on this mix, which has also been featured on fellow music blog Fried my little brain - nice one.

Enjoy!

ps - is vanilla a euphemism for something or am i just being thick? yes, probably.

Bite This! Robotic Mix From Montreal’s DJ Spaz

DJ SPAZ. Photo courtesy of www.thefriendattack.com

DJ SPAZ. Photo courtesy of www.thefriendattack.com

During the course of this abysmal English summer, a Montreal DJ by the name of DJ SPAZ dropped a mix into TM that really cut through a lot of hazy, atmospheric summer type mixes we’d been getting that immediately made me sit up and connect.

After a couple of months of chatting by email, I can say that 33-year-old DJ Spaz, otherwise known as Alex Pearo, is one straight up no bullshit dude, which makes it even more of a pleasure to drop his mix on you lovely folk.

Spaz’s Robotic Mix starts with a winner of a tune, Chew Fu Phat’s remix of Florida hottie “I’m Da Man of My City” from Popov, throws in some Rico Tubbs, plus that nice Crooker’s remix I keep hearing everywhere – of Radioclit’s “Secousse” - then gets busy, banging through 40 odd more tunes.

The end result is a bouncing mix that’s most certainly informed by Alex’s anything-goes style (“good music whatever the style - if it sounds good I’ll probably drop it”), playing electro, Baltimore, ghetto house, house, hip hop, funk, dancehall. And no doubt further influenced by 15 years of Djing throughout Montreal: which included sitting tight on a hip hop and dancehall residency and being the buyer for indie hip hop at a record store for a good six years of those.

Alex explained that the tracks for Robotic Mix were all sourced via the internet, which was as much of a stylistic choice as it is an indicator of how important putting music online is these days.

He says:

“The interesting thing about this mix is all the different sources I used to get the music (blogs, forums, myspace pages, etc). It ain’t record digging like the old days aka 3 years ago, but the end result is similar. I think that the producers who remixed or produced the tracks on this mix have an original and futuristic sound, which is what drew me towards their music in the first place. Also surely many DJs might jump on some of these tracks eventually but they’ll have to hear it on a mix like this first.”

If you’re in Montreal, you can catch DJ Spaz on Thursdays at House - where they recently had DJ CZECH and LA RIOTS as guests – and at Coda’s Fix Fridays, one of Montreal’s biggest electro nights.

He’s jacked in the weekend residencies in favour of branching out of what can become a musical straight-jacket and getting out on the road, with Vancouver parties and an upcoming North American tour – can’t blame him really. Good luck with it Alex & keep us posted.

Futurecop! - Live at Berlin Lounge - Australia

Growing up in the U.S. in the 80’s meant endless viewing of John Hughes films. I believe I watched Weird Science over 400 times, Sixteen Candles, 500 times and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 600 times. I could never get enough and rotated through those three fantastic movies. Every once in a while it’s nice to be taken back to all that was birthed out of that culture – Nintendo, E.T., Transformers, My Little Pony, Molly Ringwald, Miami Vice, David Lee Roth, Apple, Micheal J. Fox, Jem and the Holograms and so much more.

Viewing Futurecop!’s profile page takes me back to that 80’s wonderland. Here are a string of mixes from the past few months that have come out of Futurecop! land, that I never got around to posting. Thanks to Valerie for posting Futurecop! Live at Berlin Lounge, Australia, from June. Enjoy!

When NYC’s Mishka and Canada’s Jokers of the Scene get together, this is what happens – Mix tape love!!! Featured on the Mishka bloglin, we’ve snatched it up so we can spread the love around a bit more! Here’s what Mishka had to say on mix tapes and their collab with JOTS!

“Mix tapes have always been an integral part of NYC’s underground culture and burgeoning music scene, and as such, Mishka is proud to carry on the tradition with the launch of Keep Watch. Featuring top DJ’s hailing from every genre and geographic corner, Mishka’s Keep Watch party-mixes celebrates one of the most widely practiced American art forms. Released on a semi regular basis (usually to accompanying party), the mixes will be available for free download through our site, the Bloglin and very shortly podcast on Itunes.

To kick off the Keep Watch series, we have invited our Canadian friends, Jokers of the Scene (JOTS), to put together something special just for you. This first volume by JOTS also celebrates the 5th anniversary of their high popular club night Disorganised, which has hosted the earliest Canadian appearances of such party heroes like MSTRKRFT, CSS, Diplo, Crystal Castles and Girl Talk.
