Hiya, this is gonna be a cheap cut & paste job as I’m insanely busy - I’ve been sitting on this hot Belgian dubstep mix for a couple of months and the guilt is getting to me. It’s last year’s but check out their myspace for new tracks and their website for some more mixes.

The Grimelock crew hail from Brussels, starting out in 1998 as a drum and bass collective, and in 2004, way before I even heard of dubstep, the boys started play grime, dubstep and dark garage, which they got turned on to by London’s Plasticman on Nuit Blanche.

Over the years they’ve DJed, promoted parties, and made a heap of tracks. They’ve DJed alongside Youngsta, Skream, ThinKing, Scan One, Kode9, Distance, Maximum, Chef, Geeneus, Plastician, Roll Deep, JME, Skepta and more.

Throwing parties together with Boups (Le Gazon, Nuit Blanche…), they created a strictly grime and dubstep evening with names like Plastician, D1, Geeneus, Youngsta, Riko Dan, Slimzee, Hatcha and Crazy D, while giving props to the scene’s local dj’s and producers.

Some of Grimelock’s tracks include “The City”, “Brussels Target”, “Night Ridder”, “Ghost Town” and “Little Soldier”, which they describe as “dark sub bass influenced music with grime beats”.

Here’s some of their upcoming gigs for 2008. I’ve heard soo many good things about the Belgian music scene, Grimelock definitely confirm it’s true !!

So the back story to the previous post on how I met Lars Moston.

I went to Berlin in April. Before I went, I was talking to Mister Sushi about good places to check out, and he said, ‘Oh you definitely have to meet my mate . He knows the city like the back of his hand.’

Well, it’s always the way: when you’re visiting people, you’re more or less hostage to their plans and schedules, but after a couple of myspace messages, Lars invited me round on my last day for some tea.

On the last day, I hopped on the train at Alexander-platz and headed over to the east part of the city.

The city landscape shifted dramatically during the half hour train journey, from downtown urbanness to ramshackle plots of land and chaotic buildings. It was a cold and rainy and dark day. Lars’ flat was in a row of terraced pastel-coloured buildings, two floors up, where he lived with his girlfriend. It was a chilled-out and spacious flat with a view across to the river.

As we shared a pot of tea, we talked about different party scenes and music around Europe. Lars told me he played at Breakspoll this year, and he’s got a couple of UK dates this summer, including festival in Jersey.

In Germany, he DJs weekly in Berlin and he also parties regularly with electro acts such as 2 Many DJs, Boys Noize, Hell, Tiga, Felix da Housecat, Surkin, Moonbootica, and Crookers as part of his residency at Cologne’s Loonyland.

Even though Lars is in his early twenties, he’s been DJing and producing and promoting for a while and has got loads of his own projects on the way: stuff with Moston & Malente and The Killergroove Formula, plus his own solo projects.

In March “What Now” was released on Kisu Music, with remixes from Malente, Fukkk Offf and Bastian Heerhorst, and in April, “Jack It!” came out on Freakz Me Out Rec. / Q Distribution and includes remixes from Acid Jacks and Daniel Dexter vs Nhan Solo. Good stuff!

Here are the two tracks to check out, plus two mixes to take away.

“Jack It!” is a deceptively easy 4/4, stripped-down tune with a flickering wash of sound and an even bassline.

“What Now” is an edgy techno song that sums up that horrible Monday drudge, very dark and heavy and industrial.

Sometime within the past few weeks, Lee from No Love Lost Records, mentioned he was expecting a mixtape from Ottawa selectors, DJ Booth & Chameleonic aka JOKERS OF THE SCENE. I was beyond ELATED! These days it’s either heavy bass or bands. I’m back and forth between rough, slow. Hmm. Yeah right, so here’s a slammin mix by Impakt who comes to us from the croissant lovin’ land of France. With all that comes in, I rarely have time to listen to a full on mix these days. But with a tracklist that begins with Tomb Crew, I make the effort! Wiley’s “Wearing My Rolex” (Pirate Soundsystem Bassline Mix) is in there, which I love, ending with Rusko’s, “Cockney Thug” (Drum of Death Baltimore Mix), that will get you to wake you the f*ck! up!
