Mendetz - The Boola

Mendetz - The Boola - The Requesters Hard to Find Remix

Paul Lester, The Guardian on Mendetz

Mendetz, who formed in 2003, are a new Spanish band, offering a Catalonian version of retro-electro and synthed-up rock. They use old-series Casios and an ancient Yamaha (sadly not the motorbike) to create something they call Casiopunk, with vigorous nods to the early 80s, all Sega bleeps and keyboard riffs. They’re so in hock to Duran Duran it’s not true: basically, Planet Earth and Girls On Film are to Mendetz what Rubber Soul and Revolver are to Oasis, ie the reason they exist, the air that they breathe, their sun and their moon. In prosaic terms: without them, they’d be wandering round like bonceless poultry.

Inspired by late-90s French disco and early-00s electroclash as well as the nouveau-arty punk-funk of Franz et al, their demo was chosen Best Of 2006 by some trendy Spanish magazines and they reached the final stages of the Benicassim Festival demo clash, although the judges were probably so out of their gourd, like everyone else at that legendarily debauched annual beano, that everything sounded great that day.

The Mendetz players were previously part of the hardcore scene in Barcelona, although we’re not sure whether that means hardcore music scene or hardcore sex scene. Possibly both. They’ve actually got one song called Futuresex which won an award for Best Spanish Indie Song in 2006. It goes like this: “All vigorexic musculated men, anorexic corporate girls/Are the population of the world, but they cannot have sex/No, no, no, they cannot have sex/There’s no more contact, no more touch/No more passion, no more vice, now there’s a sexual device!” Having recently supported Arctic Monkeys in Europe, said lyric leads one to imagine what it might have been like to be a fly on the wall when South Yorkshire’s least-gay men wandered into these boys’ dressing room. Would have paid good money - pesetas or Euros - to see that.

Despite coming from the entrails of an old Casio keyboard, the music of Mendetz is pure artesian where nothing is programmed nor pre-recorded. The lyrics speak of sex of the future, of forgotten actors from the ’80s and of Chimo Bayo if needs be… His debut album, Mendetz, was released in Spain in 2006, and now in UK.

…Tongue-in-cheek pop music that references something called the orgasmatron. What more could you want?
