Dances With White Girls - GirlsBug!

Throne of Blood Records

We got our hands on an infectious dance floor party starting tune – “Girlsbug“, the first track from the EP – “New Crack Swing“, produced by Dances With White Girls, being released on the new and improved Throne of Blood Records.

We’re happy to see NYC based, TOB alive and kicking after going through distributor drama along with well over 300 indie label worldwide, late last year. Unfortunately, we lost a few good one’s along the way. However, as they say, the strong survive, perseverance pays off, and good music reigns supreme, Throne of Blood is proof of just that.

The new New York based label is owned and operated by The Rapture. Originally created as a vehicle to release 12″s singles from the bands 2007 album – “Pieces of the People We Love.” The New Crack Swing EP is the first of many non-Rapture releases to come.

TRASH MENAGERIE SEPTEMBER RECAP

This is what Trash Menagerie was throwing down during the month of September. Features, interviews, parties, and plenty’a mix and MP3 download. We’re snuggling in for the busy month of October. Have you started thinking about your Halloween costume yet? We’re looking for ideas, so please hit us up and let us know if you’ve got any. Last year we gave you a heads up on how to MAKE YOUR OWN DAFT PUNK COSTUME. Hipster Runoff offered up a bit of inspiration, “WTF SHOULD I B 4 ALL HALLOW’S EVE”, But is it “ok” to be a Justice this year, if you were a Daft last year?

A truly scary option, the United States Vice Presidential Republican
Candidate
and current Governor of Alaska - Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin Halloween Viking
Hmm, I guess she didn’t get understand the memo regarding last year’s Halloween Party. It was a Nordic theme. Looks like she still won anyway, even though she didn’t really come close to qualifying.

Sarah Palin 7 Months Preggers “I can hide my belly in a sexy, yet sophisticated, little black business suit.”
Sarah Palin seven months pregnant
Goodness, her belly is HUGE, she looks like she’s going to pop any day now, right?

This is what Demi Moore looked like when she was seven months preggers . . .

Sarah Palin’s Witch Doctor . . .

Other potential options - “Sarah Palin Mayor of Meth”, “Sarah Palin Miss Alaska”, “Sarah Palin Soccer Mom”. Wow, and to think, the election isn’t even over yet, we’ve still got a few weeks to go . . . goodness, i’m sure we’ll have so many more choices to choose from. Maybe i’ll pull off one of those “couple costumes,” and we can go together as “Foreign Palin Policy“. One of us will be Russia, and the other Alaska, and we’ll stand on opposite sides of the room and say “I can see ya over there, behave yourself!”

The Rapture !K7 Mix - Unmastered

My favorite band, The Rapture, also DJ. They are soon releasing a mix on K7, and oops, it leaked. This is the un-mastered version. They have two of my favorite tracks back to back - Armand Van HeldenFlowerz” & Cajmere feat. Dajae - “Say U Will.” Paul Johnson’s “Get, Get, Down”, I think this was the tracks where he showed the world, not only could he produce, but also sing. Also included in the mix the unreleased track from the forthcoming - Dances With White Girls EP “Everybody’s Got to Make a Living”, which is soon coming out on their own label - “Throne Of Blood“, the EP is currently “in promo”, expect it to be making the blog rounds soon!

The Presets Return with a New Album & Tour Dates

Ultra 8201 just made my day . . . I am so excited, I am so excited! (and perhaps living under a rock?!?!?)

I LOVE me some Presets, I wonder if their ears are ringing, because I was listening to their earlier releases, “Beams” & “Girl and the Sea” this afternoon and talking to my girl Lynnel about when they were finally going to release their new LP -APOCALYPSO“. This news is wicked awesome.

The Presets were my first introduction to Modular, which lead to being turned on to Cut Copy, and all the rest. I very vividly remember playing “Girl and the Sea” to death the month I made the decision to leave Chicago and move to New York. It was a bittersweet time, and that EP, and particularly, the title track “Girl and the Sea” were the soundtrack of my life back then. I think I shed a tear or 2 on a few occasions. Luckily, “Girl and the Sea” was followed by “Kitty in the Middle”, and that track is all “sexy time”, so I didn’t stay emo for long. But, its cool, because whenever I hear these songs, it totally takes me back. *Sigh*, music is pretty amazing like that, the way it triggers memories, thoughts, feelings, experiences. Gotta love it!

Girl and the Sea - The Presets - Cut Copy Remix

I have been lucky to see them live several times, when they opened for The Rapture, and they’re even BETTER live, then when recorded and “studiofied”, which is a rarity for most acts. I don’t know which show to go to in NY? Maybe both?

Calvin Harris, The Rapture, Cypress Hill, Out Perform Kanye Down Under

Mini highlight of this video, (why? I dont’ know) . . . watching Surkin “spin and smoke”

Sounds like Kayne left his good vibrations back home in Chicago. K - you know you can travel with that s@#$% these days?

News.com.au - Not so rapt

A BIT of humility goes a long way, but, unfortunately, it’s an attribute Kanye West doesn’t seem to have much of.

Trumpeting himself as the best artist ever, West’s performance at last week’s Good Vibrations festival was by no means the best of the day.

Audience reaction indicated that Calvin Harris, The Rapture and Cypress Hill far out-performed West, even with all the bells and whistles of his stage show, which were lost on the outdoor event.

And that’s not to mention West refusing to do media interviews and banning photographers from taking pictures of his set.

Poster Art in Music, Helping to Bridge the Gap?

Santogold, The+Rapture, White+williams, poster+art, dan+stiles

Poster art seems to be popping up more than usual in various discussions and interactions I’ve been having as of late. Billboard Magazine recently posted their list of The Top 25 Rock Posters Of All Time which, being a fan of poster art, I was really interested in. Hendrix, Zeppelin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Radiohead, all made the list.

Ironically, a few weeks later, I crossed paths with Linda Postenrieder, owner and curator of The Pelican Art Gallery, in Petaluma, California. In a few months, she will be featuring the art of Stanley “Mouse” Miller. The exhibit will include some of his original poster art, and also display his more recent fine art works. Mouse is best known for his psychedelic art designs for 1960s rock concert posters, and was heavily influenced by Art Nouveau graphics, particularly the work of Alphonse Mucha. (Mucha believed that art existed only to communicate a spiritual message, and nothing more, and was frustrated when he gained fame as a commercial artist.)

Mouse was integral in founding the Berkeley Bonaparte distribution agency in order to produce and sell psychedelic posters. In 1971 he worked together with Alton Kelly as of part of Mouse Studios and the Monster Company, producing album art for legendary concert promoter Bill Graham (The Fillmore), and rock bands the likes of Greatful Dead, Journey, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver, and Hot Rod memorabilia. Mouse and Kelly are also said to have influenced the Zig-Zag rolling paper brand. Some of their most recognizable art collaborations include creating the skeleton and roses image that became the Grateful Dead’s archetypal iconography, and Journey’s wings and beetles.

As Mouse produced a significant amount of art for Graham, I felt putting Postenrieder in touch with Bill’s son, Alex Graham, seemed like a logical connection to make, as Alex maintains a temperature controlled vault preserving his father’s collection, much of which contains Mouses’ work.

Shortly after, in mid December, in yet another ironic twist, I was involved with a holiday party in Brooklyn, at the Williamsburg Music Hall. The party was produced by Metromix, and featured performances by Santogold, The Rapture, White Williams, and David Bruno. The event producer, Mara Ingram, envisioned producing limited edition poster art for the party, which I thought was a brilliant idea. She asked for my input on artists, being a longtime fan of Dan Stiles work, I naturally suggested Stiles + Co. who’s award winning company specializes in branding and identity, creating logos, interactive and web design, print, information design, and packaging. Their clients range from independent record labels to technology giants. Some recent projects include poster art for The Hold Steady, Cat Power, TV on the Radio, Fiest, Bumbershoot Festival, Klaxons, Lady Sovereign, Ween, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Dizzee Rascal, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

So with poster art swirling in my head, as well as plummeting music sales, I wondered if custom designed poster art is becoming an increasingly hotter commodity as of late? Not that it’s ever lost its luster, but I wondered if perhaps poster art could be one avenue for artists to explore to help place more tangible value on music? I got in touch with Stiles to ask some questions and get some insight.

Audio Pimpstress: Dan, thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me about this

Dan Stiles: Great questions, you’ve thought this farther through than most people I’ve talked to

AP: What do you think of Rolling Stone’s list?

DS: Wow, I sort of agree with maybe 3 of those being the best, another couple being good, and the rest are barely average. What a crappy list. Maybe they could have gotten an actual poster expert like Paul Grushkin (author of the Art of Rock) to put a list together. Because that one sucked.

AP: So, with all of these recent events/connections, it got me thinking, is poster art, as of recent, becoming, for lack of a better word, “popular” again? Or has it remained a consistent part of music culture all these years? I am very aware there are hardcore collectors, and the value of past works, Wolfgang’s vault, etc.

DS: It has persisted in many forms. However, in the last decade we have seen an explosion of artists making posters and working in the screen printed medium. This is all thanks to people following the success of Frank Kozik coming out of the late 80’s early 90’s “grunge” explosion. He really brought the full color poster back to life. Before that the only person of any real note doing color work was Art Chantry in Seattle. For the most part the 80’s were all about DIY Xerox posters. There were tons of people doing them, and lots of them were really good (in a DIY kind of way), but very few people were doing good color work. Too expensive and too time consuming for punk bands. So yes, it is popular again, with both artists and fans and collectors. But no, people never stopped making them, its just that it went underground for about a decade.

AP: What I’m wondering is, was there was at any point a decline, or leveling off, and if perhaps it’s on the rise again, now that physical music sales have plummeted?

DS: You are the first person to draw the connection between a media sales dropping and poster sales rising. I have no idea if there is a connection, but it’s a great hypothesis.

AP: I am hardcore music fan, myself, and I know other fans, still like to have something tangible from an artist, or a show. I’m not one to by t-shirts at a merch table, but I would easily shell out $20 - $30 for a poster.

DS: Yes, I often find this to be the case. Especially among fans who are old enough to have real jobs. The kids still spend all their money on beer, and maybe a CD. $20 for “a piece of paper” seems really steep to someone slinging coffee for $6 an hour.

AP: So my question is this, is poster art, (outside of other forms of artistic packaging ie: Radiohead’s “In Rainbows”) perhaps a valid avenue that should be explored or given more attention, as perhaps a way to fill this void in the un-tangible digital era? As bands are not making money selling physical music, perhaps this is a somewhat overlooked avenue/art form for artist or label to tap into (once again) to alleviate loss of physical sales?
By no means do I think I’m on to something new with my line of thinking, taking an educated guess, I would think here are lots of bands/performers that do in fact commission, print, and sell on a regular basis, or do they? Perhaps this is already happening and I’m just not aware?

DS: The poster “industry” is at a cross roads right now. When I first started (in about 91) I was doing hand drawn xerox prints for whatever cool bands came to town. I worked for the promoters, I got $20, free admission, and all the beer I could drink. Around ‘93 I first saw a Frank Kozik screen print (remember this was the pre-internet stone age) and it blew my mind. I went out and immediately taught myself to screen print so I could do color work. Back then you just did some posters for the promoter, or the venue, or maybe the band, if they knew you (usually because (more…)

Daft Punk - The Year In Review v3 - New York

Daft Punk

Photo credit: NylonIt had been an amazing, crazy, (and exhausting!) 2 weeks across North America, and this is where it ended, Brooklyn, New York.

For Daft’s final performance at Keyspan Park, they put out an open call to all fans to come out and shoot their live performance and submit it for use in a future Daft video, to be produced by Oliver Gondry. The show was sold out, but die hard fans danced in the parking lot, and their genuine appreciation for the duo did not go without notice. Shortly after the show began, security guards made a few rounds around the lot giving away free tickets to see, what many called the best performance they had seen in 2007. Daft and their Pyramid did not disappoint.

So it’s fitting that the after party at Studio B followed suit. The Ed Banger posse Busy P, SebastiAn, Kavinsky, the Throne of Blood crew - The Rapture, James Friedman, and Gildas from Kitsune took to the decks “one more time”, and “killed it”. Thomas and Guy inconspicuously hung out in the DJ booth, before kicking back in the green room with friends and family. Shortly there after, they were whisked away in a limo for some well deserved R&R, while the after party at Studio B raged on . . .

Best of 2007: Party - Justice & Daft Punk after parties = bananas

“The Daft Punk “Dafter” Party was held at Studio B in Greenpoint Brooklyn, which has seen some of the best parties this summer. it was amazingly awesome times 398. It ruled, Busy P killed it and literally nine people have told me it was the best party they’ve ever been to in New York, which is saying a lot.” - Nylon Magazine

“Our friends over at Mas sure know how to throw a good party…while Anthem didn’t manage to catch Daft Punk live (we didn’t have the requisite million dollars and/or pint of virgin’s blood required to bribe a ticket off of someone), the “Dafter Party” (get it? get it?) over at Studio B came in a close second. At least that’s what we’re tellin’ ourselves. Our Senior Editor was bobbing his head to James F&*@#*&! Friedman, Gildas from Kitsune, Busy P (Throne of Blood) and Sebastian and Kavinsky from Ed Banger all manned the turntables, and everything was just dandy until the next day’s hangover, which we think might’ve been full-blown alcohol poisoning.” - - Anthem Magazine

“Probably the “livest” party i’ve been to this year! Super fun.”
- Amy Phillips – Senior News Editor, Pitchfork

TiPPY & JNTHN - “Dirty Sex” and “Mr. White”

Tippy

Standing at 5′3″, Tippy’s diminutive frame and pale, punk rock aesthetic hides a surprisingly compelling artist. Combining raw old school sound, with west coast beats and east coast experience, Tippy transforms herself on stage, emanating an intoxicating sensuality, as daring and contagious as her music. She seduces her audience with a lyricism that seesaws between vulnerability and sexual voracity, sweet flirtation and unabashed craving, its no wonder Tippy holds the attention of her audience with her recounts of late rendezvous, and good love gone bad.Although in the past, she’s touted herself as a hip-hop artist, Tippy’s been letting on for awhile that’s she’s been working on a new project. And she’s finally let on to what she’s been up to, she’s been busy collaborating with producer Jonathan Krenik aka JNTHN, who’s credits include The Rapture, !!!, Le Tigre, and Elefant. The duo delivered us “Dirty Sex” and “Mr. White” straight outta the studio, they just finished mastering these cuts last night - it doesn’t get any fresher, or hotter than this!

From Nylon Mag
Words by Johnathan Durbin

Men want her . . . and women want her, too.
That’s understandable. Tippy exudes an irresistible, ultra-magnetic charm, not unlike the Death Star’s tractor beam. She’s downtown’s most enigmatic female rhyme-slinger, an artist whose carnal charisma is only eclipsed by her ear for rhythm. Girl’s got moves, trust us. With her deceptively laconic flow and late night tales of desire, lust and sexytimes, Tippy’s on the verge of breakthrough success. After self-releasing her debut, “Come Feel My Rhythm”, on iTunes last year, she’s been working on fresh sounds to move both minds and moneymakers. We refer you to “Hot Damn”, “Loose Cannon” and “Oh No”, any one of which will make you shake your groove-thang—guaranteed. We caught up with Ms. Tippy to talk about inspiration, perspiration, and how the two are often one and the same.

NYLON: What brought you to hip-hop?

TIPPY: When I heard hip-hop it was like crack! The beats, the vibe, ahh…everything. That, and I was secretly a very perverted child, ha, ha, ha. But seriously, when I was growing up hip-hop was at one of its best moments in time. MTV was the only station of its kind and I would wait all day for the new Dre or Snoop video to come on ’cuz back in the day there was no way of telling what was next. Biggie and Tupac were alive, pumpin out hits like everyday. Everything coming out was ridiculously hot: SWV, Tony Toni Tone, and Jodeci, just to name a few.

NYLON: What are your favorite lyrical subjects? Is expressing sexuality a priority?

TIPPY: Let me just say this. I’m sexual…point blank. It tends to come out in my music, I mean, how can it not? My first album was definitely an emotionally charged record, because I was a nutcase at the time I was writing it. Relationships are a bitch, ya know? But the record I’m currently working on is more of a party vibe because that’s where I’m at right now.

NYLON: When you play live, all the boys and girls want you…

TIPPY: I just put it out there and accept anything that comes back in return. I’m a playful girl, what can I say? When I go to shows and there’s good music, something just makes me start to feel freaky. Either that or there’s some carnal attraction going on, and either way I dig it.

NYLON: Why go from a beatbox to a full band? Any new surprises to the show?

TIPPY: I’ve been playing for a bit now with my D.J., Scott Melker. I felt like it was time to switch it up. So I made some phone calls and put together a really talented group of guys for the show. On drums I have Gunnar from the Exit, guitar is Cassonova Brown who’s in the studio recording his solo album called Dead Kings Society, bass is a great friend Nick Wendel, and Cri is helping out on some vocals. They’ve really made my tracks come to life. As for surprises, it wouldn’t be a Tippy show without ‘em. The show’s guaranteed to be a raunchy good time.

NYLON: Sell yourself… Why should we come to your show?

TIPPY: Tits and ass? There’s gonna be some of that. Be prepared to party like a f*kin’ rockstar. Imagine, great music with a kickass band, liquor, and guaranteed attractives. How could you go wrong?
