OH GOODNIZZ!! Scion, the people that keep bringing worthwhile parties in events to cities I live in, has teamed up with Brooklyn based Fool’s Gold (A-Trak, Kid Sister, Flosstradamus, etc.) to bring out Volume 22 of their CD Sampler.
It’s a two disk present that gives you:
On disk one: remixes of the Fool’s Gold crew’s stuff by reputable names like Chromeo, Surkin, and Juri Hulkkonen that have been made just for the Sampler
On disk two: label co-founder Nick Catchdubs selected their biggest club hits and whipped it all together in a frothy DJ mix.
Why should you be excited about this in addition to the dope new mixes they offer? The EVENTS that come along with it (and we all know Scion event= free with RSVP) if you happen to live in Miami, Atlanta, Philly, or Baltimore.
The great thing about supporting a project like this is that all the proceeds from purchase of the Sampler go directly to the artists. You can get this stuff in person for FREE at the events they have and from some of their retailers. Should you be unable to do so- no worries, you can also purchase the remixes online starting October 14th.
With a mutual love for old school bikes – the tricked out sort like BMX, Haro, Hutch and Skyway, it was only natural that Leroy Washington and Sevenfive chose Tuff Wheelz as the moniker they would use to create their music. “Skyway made these incredible colored plastic wheels called Tuff Wheels. That’s the reason of our name,” adds Sevenfive.
2007 marked the year Leroy and Sevenfive joined forces for the French label Discolor as the official label Dj’s and decided to team up as Tuff Wheelz. But by no means are the duo new to the music industry. With a long run as a top French D&B Dj, Leroy has been in the grind for over 10 years and Sevenfive producing electronic music since 1997.
Leroy is the curator of the monthly ‘Let Me Bang’ parties in Bordeaux along with Kazey and has played with Dj Funk, Para One, Surkin, Bobmo, Strip Steve and Dj Gero. Sevenfive is the co-founder of audio/visual collective, Neurosystem and has been edited by such labels as Soulseek, GC recordings and Digital Kranky. He has gigged with Modeselektor, Jean Nipon, Danton Eeprom, Ovuca and Yuksek.
Offering up a good dose of 90’s, acid, deep and filtered house, baltimore, electro and techno, Tuff Wheelz deliver a fine mix of flavor. They’ve edited Davina’s house classic “Don’t You Want It” and have done remixes for Purple Crush, “Fuck The DJ“, The Shoes “Knock Out” and Strip Steve “Ready Steady“. Check out their latest track “The Ride“, featured below!
Tuff Wheelz are currently working on a track for Damaged Good$ out of Texas and have some new original productions in the works. They’ll continue to provide bouncy music in the country of wine and cheese at their ‘Keep On Pumpin’ monthly in Bordeaux and they’ll be playing with the EATDISCO crew who will be celebrating their 1st birthday 11th July at The End in Newcastle Upon Tyne!!!!!!!
A while back I did a little post on Florida heroes KMFX and pair of darling bootlegs they gave us to give you. Well they have come back at us with even more this time around. They have been kind enough to bless us with something even better, three of the four tracks off of Illeven Eleven Records most recent release, “Feelin The Luv“. Featuring vocals from Yolanda (often spotted collaborating with breaks superstars Deekline and Wizard) this is by far their best release to date, IMO. I’m partial to the “Original Chicago Mix” with it’s old school keys and banging beats but this release has a little something for everyone centered around Yolanda’s uplifting vocal. The Tampa Mix has the same drive but substitutes the bang for the mechanical choppy electro beat that put Florida Breaks on the map many years ago.
Chicago mainstay Zebo puts a Chicago house meets B-more break twist hanging on to the breathy part of the vocal and those infectious piano stabs. The best part of this version is the breakdown into very traditional Baile beat that adds real depth and a unique twist to the original. The final remix comes from recent, bass heavy, dancefloor friendly upstarts, Twocker, who worked their usual magic with the tune cranking out their expected banger that will be found in a diverse array of DJ sets, working extremely well in each. You can got to Beatport to check this one and, of course, buy it.
But Wait!!! There’s more!! Remember when, not too long ago, Surkin came out with his most recent “Next of Kin EP” and it had this great tune “White Knight Two“? You hustled to buy it (or download it you bunch of limey pirates, YARRR) and when you tried to play it out there was something missing in the low end. Not sure everyone felt this way but i sure did and I guess KMFX did as well. They spung this breaky re-fix on me and low and behold, White Knight is rocking on the floor with the bass that it was so sorely missing and gave me the go ahead to pass it on to our readers along with the rest.
KMFX will continue to be mainstays in the american breaks scene and is likely to emerge outside the limited world of breaks and into the vast EDM universe keep checking for future KMFX and illeven eleven Records for brilliant upcoming releases.
A BIT of humility goes a long way, but, unfortunately, it’s an attribute Kanye West doesn’t seem to have much of.
Trumpeting himself as the best artist ever, West’s performance at last week’s Good Vibrations festival was by no means the best of the day.
Audience reaction indicated that Calvin Harris,The Rapture and Cypress Hill far out-performed West, even with all the bells and whistles of his stage show, which were lost on the outdoor event.
And that’s not to mention West refusing to do media interviews and banning photographers from taking pictures of his set.
The frigid weather we’ve been having in Chicago, -1° F, is enough to keep a person holed up in the house for days on end! Not too terrible if you’ve gone to the grocery, stocked up on some good food, a sugary snack or two, perhaps picked up a few movies and have some good music to get you through the chill!!
The lovely Kimberleysmobiledisco of TM, featured MeMeMe late January, It’s All About MeMeMe! complete with an excellent mix to get us going! I’ve just listened to the most recent they’ve whipped up for NLLR and it is one FINE PIECE OF ASS in the form of a mix. Sink your teeth into this one wherever you are, freezing or hot. Cheers!!
“MeMeMe, aka Moxie and Purlow, are a very tight Nottingham based DJ duo with a much buzzed about residency at much loved club, STEALTH. Having already played alongside the likes of EROL ALKAN, KISSY SELL OUT, SINDEN, NIGHTMOVES, BANG GANG DEEJAYS, LATE OF THE PIER, FRIENDLY FIRES, DETBOI, PRIMARY 1, D.I.M., CRYSTAL CASTLES, GUNS & BOMBS, LILLICA LIBERTINE and RORY PHILLIPS, these two fine and most talented individuals have thoroughly earned their deejay stripes and their career is barely off the ground. If like me you’re a big fan of the utterly fresh sound folks like HERVE, SINDEN, SWITCH, DROP THE LIME, SURKIN and friends are currently throwing down, then you’re gonna’ flip over this mix. In the space of 13 tracks and 1 hour MEMEME manage to whip up the euphoric frenzy of a full nights clubbing at the coolest venue imaginable. There’s more whirring Bassline and Dubstep-style sub-bass, Bmore and Jukey shake, grinding Electro pulse and stuttered post-Hip Hop, post-Rave beat and melody in this mix than you’ll know what to do with. It’s an absolutely bangin’ set from start to finish, comprised of only the very hottest tunes out there at the moment, selected and mixed to woofer trembling perfection. Needless to say MEMEME are going all kinds of good places in 2008. If after enjoying this exclusive mix that MOXIE and PURLOW have lovingly crafted for you, you are left craving more MEMEME, then you’re in luck! They did a sweet-as mix for Trash Menagerie only last month, which I’ve conveniently linked below. So there we are, go friend MEMEME, MOXIE and PURLOW on Myspace, check out their extensive list of upcoming dates and get on this mix!!!” – No Love Lost Records

I’m about to jump on a plane and head to the great Midwest. I only have 20 minutes, so this post won’t be as in depth and link up as I would like it to. Perhaps i’ll revisit in the next few days and do it up proper. Perhaps not : (
I’ll be spending my NYE in Chicago at Smart Bar with Dave Taylor, known to most as Switch. He produced M.I.A.’s latest album “Kala”, which hit many “Top of 2007″ lists this year, including #1 on Rolling Stone. He’s also been doing a bit of production work on Sanogold’s debut album. It’s a bit ironic that Santi was also named Rolling Stone’s #1 artist to watch in 2008. SO! Without further ado, here is my Top of 2007 list (to the best of my recollection).
These things can be difficult, I always feel someone or something is missing . . . ufff!

Photo: BasenI heard Shir Khan’s BBC One Radio Mix about a year ago and was instantly hooked. Ironically, the same night I heard his mix, I also checked out my first Trouble & Bass party at Boogaloo where I met the ever so talented crew and homie, Luca Venezia aka Drop The Lime/Curses! (More on that later - hint, Institubes tour!)
Anyway, seems things are coming along nicely for Shir Khan and deservedly so!
Shir Khan is regarded as Berlin’s Premier DJ outfit in the discothèque and electro scene. He has been trashing dancefloors all over Europe. Shir Khan has played on the bill with the whole Ed Banger Party Crew, Yuksek, Simian Mobile Disco, Tomboy, Bonde do Role, Munk, Radioclit, Snax, Khan, Mocky, Erlend Oye and many other artists.
After two 12″s from Surkin and Adam Sky, SHIR KHAN - MAXIMIZE! will be the first Double Mix-Cd on Exploited.
SHIR KHAN – MAXIMIZE! is straddling the lines between Electro, Baile Funk, New Wave, Techno and Punk. It’s all the mess & mayhem of nightlife packaged into a double disc of never-ending strobing bliss. And it is also a collection of tracks from friends, Shir Khan has dj’d with in the past.
49 Tracks with Exclusives from Simian Mobile Disco, Sirius Mo, Adam Sky vs Mark Stewart (The Popgroup), Munk vs Mocky, Justice vs Spektrum, Sergej Auto vs Edu K, Captain Comatose, Free Blood, Sinden. Plus Remixes from Jesse Rose, Surkin, Switch, and Digitalism.
In The News
Recently included on the URB Next 100 List (2007), Shir Khan is making waves far outside Germany with his unconventional, uncompromising blend of dance-music style. Mainly spread through the Internet, Shir Khan has become a key tastemaker DJ and jack-of-all-trades. Right now, Shir Khan must be one of the busiest Djs in Berlin. Besides constantly dropping cutting edge Dj mixes for Fabric (members area), Ministry of Sound, BBC Radio 1, XFM, he has also started his own imprint Exploited, with artists such as Surkin, Adam Sky vs Mark Stewart, Sirius Mo, Chris de Luca vs Phon.o and is currently a remixer in demand for the ones of Brazilian Baile Funk-Trio Bonde do Role (Domino), New Yorks New Young Pony Club support Act Holy Hail (ACTH Recordings) or The Jai-Alai Savant (City Slang) of Major Taylor-Fame (the man that invented the Hollertronix-parties around Diplo from M.I.A.).
Bonde do Role - “Office Boy”
At a time when even Minimal-DJs and -fans are opening up to Dubstep and Bassline House it becomes evident that more and more clubbers and music-lovers are looking for a brand new sound, for thrillingly exotic line-up combinations and exciting up-to-date performances. Just listen to Simian Mobile Disco, the Klaxons, Justice, Uffie&Feadz, Switch, Sinden, Herve, Lady Sovereign or TTC and you’ll know what we are talking about - not to forget the media hype called “Nu Rave”. London, Berlin and many more places around the world are dancing already to a new wave of ecleticism and dancefloor-power and it keeps on spreading.
Shir Khan did a new mix for swedish musicblog DISCOBELLE as well as for Jonty Skruffs show on MINISTRY OF SOUND. Furthermore, Berlin new rave/ mash-up maestro Shir Khan chatted to Skrufff this week (8 June 2007 Skrufff-E #313) about the state of Berlin’s club scene and said that minimal techno continues to dominate the city’s musical landscape.
“It’s funny because everyone from the techno-minimal scene tells me that they hate minimal and they don’t want to hear it any more, then you go to those clubs like Arena Bar or Panorama Bar, maybe not so much Panorama, it’s not quite so minimal, but all those places that claim not to be minimal, when you go there it’s all minimal,” he laughed.
“Everyone’s telling me ‘minimal sucks’-you see T shirts saying ‘Kill Minimal’ it’s quite trendy to say minimal is out but it’s still actually really big.”
Carving out his own niche as a mash-up, then electroclash and now neu rave DJ, Khan is currently riding high on the white hot baile funk/ electro crossover, courtesy of his stunningly good remix of Bonde Do Role’s new single Office Boy, though stressed Berlin has still to catch up.
“Everyone talks about neu rave but I don’t think we actually have a scene in Berlin. You get parties where they try and imitate this style but I don’t think it’s really working out; you get parties with glow sticks and the new rave fashion side but people are really just trying to imitate it.
“In the intellectual press here new rave gets a lot of disrespect,” he added, “Its either just starting or maybe it’s even already been killed by the media because they’re saying the big fuss about neu rave has already gone, particularly in the UK.”
Shir Khan’s first official double-mix CD MAXIMIZE! is out September 14th on EXPLOITED.
PITCHFORKMEDIA: “It’s like everything good thats happening in dance culture right this second.“
BPM: “If you enjoy the montage of sounds coming from DJs like Optimo, Glimmers and 2Many Djs, Berlin’s DJ Shir Khan will treat you right. Shir Khan’s repertoire spans an impressive amount of space.”
XLR8R: “SHIR KHAN is one of Berlin’s hardest working and most entertaining djs in any of the dozen genres he plays in.”
Because I am so excited about the Riot In Belgium show coming up on wednesday I thought I’d throw up a quick little “collected works of” post for them. Finally Chicago is starting to realize that theres more music out there than fucking house and mash up.

Don’t believe the hype–not all French and Americans hate each other. If they did, why would they be celebrating each other’s Independence Days?
The Institubes crew ushered in the USA’s 231st birthday at its Paris Terror Club July 4th celebration at the Concord Atlantique. Teki Latex acted as host and master of ceremonies inside this boat club on the Seine. American banners hung along the walls and above the DJ booth, while girls wore American flags in their hair. Featured among an all-star Parisian lineup (which Para One, Surkin, Orgasmic, Jean Nippon) was New York-based Institubes signee Curses! aka Drop the Lime. This one night was responsible for me burning off a month’s worth of unpasteurized cheese, croissants and baguettes.
A week and a half later, I was witness to a couple events thrown in the spririt of Bastille Day.
Saturday July 14, theDanger gathered what I estimated to be about 3,000 people on the Brooklyn Bridge. It was the last in a series of street/subway events called “One Night of Fire.” Despite months of planning, the idea is to give party-goers the feeling of spontaneity. According to the email sent just a couple weeks before, the theme was to be: ” Fire. Liberation. Paris, July 14th 1789, but this time it’s the battle for Brooklyn.” The meeting location was announced the day before, with an undisclosed parade route. From there, we were led to City Hall Park, danced in the park and splashed in the fountain, and then headed down into the Subway and took over a few trains as we raged our way to Coney Island. The only downside? No one was dressed as Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI.
The next day, I decompressed at a Bastille Day celebration in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Carroll Gardens. Frenching it up every year, Ricard and the restaurants of New York’s unofficial French Quarter turn Smith Street into the site for a petanque tournament and the place for lots of drinking outdoors. I shied away from downing Ricard (I don’t do licorice-flavored liquor, unless there’s wormwood in it) but scored francophile points by chomping down on a merguez sandwich. Untouched by New York’s street fair mafia, it was most certainly in the top tier of great NYC block parties. The only downside? No one was dressed as Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI…but at least this party had a guillotine!
