Justice “A Cross The Universe” New York Premiere, Review, & Contest

Justice - A Cross The Universe - Trailer from industreate on Vimeo.

I saw the New York premiere of “Justice’ A Cross the Universe” last week. It’s a documentary of the band shot & produced by award winning directors Romain Gavras (”Stress”), and So Me (”D.A.N.C.E.”, “DVNO”) during the last 3 weeks of their Myspace sponsored tour in North America.

The screening was supposed to start at 7, I got there 20 minutes late, I thought I was going to miss it, but it was just starting. Members of the Ed Banger gang were in attendance, Busy P, So Me, SebastiAN, Amandine, of course Justice - Xavier and Gaspard.

I really thought one of best “characters” was the enduring, Christian bus driver. 100% Americana, 55 - 60 years old, reminiscing about singing in the church choir, practicing his vocal exercises, snapping shots of mountains with his camera phone, dealing with blown tires, and “crap” . . . literally.

Now throw the bus driver in with Justice, and their tour manager, “Bouchon“, English translation = bottleneck, stopper, plug. Bouchon has an obsession with guns, (I swear on one occasion he was in a Walmart shopping for one.) I think he is the most “gangster” French person i’ve come across in awhile, if ever. He’s definitely over the top.

Justice Music kissing

And last but not least, Justice. Some of my personal favorite moments - Xavier & Gaspard kissing - Gaspard having sex with an Asian girl that allegedly looked like Xavier. The duo shopping for 8 mil homes. (Can they really afford that?)

Justice A Cross The Universe

Lots of drunk girls freaking out, singing “We Are Your Friends” at the top of their lungs, lots of “OMG I love you guys!”, puking, fights, blood, and hotel room pillow fights. I learned that Xavier can play the piano, and quite well, he is also caught on film serenading Anthony Keidis from Red Hot Chili Peppers with his band’s own song “Under the Bridge“. The look on Keidis’ face is priceless. There are also cameo appearances by Diplo (using the bathroom), the Ed Banger clan, and various other “scensters”.

Justice A Cross The Universe Gaspard

It was an entertaining movie, certainly one for the fans, and it gives you more or less accurate inside look at what it’s like on tour in the land of Justice. It’s well done, considering the time restrictions it took to film, produce, and release the documentary by December 9, 08. The tour they were shooting ended in April of 08. Gavras and So Me do a great job of capturing the intensity of Justice‘ live performances. Quick cuts from revving up back stage to being right in the middle of a live dynamic sonic assault.

After the premiere, everyone headed over to hear Justice DJ at Webster Hall with SebastiAn and Busy P, who rounded out the night with old school Chicago House. Fun was had by all, and I felt like I was living a scene right out of “A Cross The Universe“.

If you live in Chicago, there is a screening of “A Cross The Universe” at The Metro on Nov. 14th, there are other screenings to coincide with their DJ gigs around North America, for more info visit UR CHICAGO.

As we speak, there is a contest running “Justice for All” - win a trip to Chicago on New Year’s Eve to hang out with Justice and So Me and party at Revolution Number 9, or take home cash. All you have to do is create a video, and get the most votes. The final winner will be chosen by Justice, So Me, Busy P, and other special folks. Maybe they will like your work so much you’ll shoot their next documentary?

Sign up and get full info at www.industreate.com/contest, create a video of what you did that was “Great in 2008“, then upload your video to www.Vimeo.com and tag it with “JST4ALL” and “TRASHMENAGERIE“.

As Big Stereo points out - “This is a contest for us too! We wanna hang out with you in Chicago so this is important, ha!*

* Trash Menagerie note to Big Stereo and the rest of ya’ll, may the best blog win!

Black Holes-Little Jinder Remix

Via Trouble & Bass

Via Trouble & Bass

A couple weeks back our very own Local Hero (no pun intended), wrote to us about Black Holes. It was a very heady subject including algorithms and low frequencies, but in the end we got a better look into Chicago’s up and coming duo. Adding now to the arsenal provided by Local a few weeks ago is a big victory for the Black Holes kids. Last week the Trouble & Bass family announced the winners of their Little Jinder remix contest for her E.P release on T&B Recordings called “Polyhedron.” Black Holes indeed won and their remix of Polyhedron is available for you, at 320kps, at the bottom of the page.

You’ll notice immediately the foreshadow of bass heaviness as soon as the track starts. But beware of the breakdowns, as the truly professional rework of this Little Jinder tune comes to your attention quickly and only builds through out the rest of the track. The song is dynamic, rave-tastic, and will bass you. A particularly glorious moment comes at around 2:20 as Little Jinder’s tender voice juxtaposes the darkness of the Black Hole synths.

As this is a special treat for you Trash readers, be sure to pick up her Polyhedron EP over at Beatport, Turntable Lab, Juno, and iTunes. Further remixes of the track will be available soon from Drop The Lime, Math Head, Blackfinger, AC Slater, and Goon & Koyote. Congratulations Black Holes on being included in an all-star line-up of US & UK producers! Enjoy the heat below and look out for Black Holes to do big bassy things in 2009!

TRASH MENAGERIE SEPTEMBER RECAP

This is what Trash Menagerie was throwing down during the month of September. Features, interviews, parties, and plenty’a mix and MP3 download. We’re snuggling in for the busy month of October. Have you started thinking about your Halloween costume yet? We’re looking for ideas, so please hit us up and let us know if you’ve got any. Last year we gave you a heads up on how to MAKE YOUR OWN DAFT PUNK COSTUME. Hipster Runoff offered up a bit of inspiration, “WTF SHOULD I B 4 ALL HALLOW’S EVE”, But is it “ok” to be a Justice this year, if you were a Daft last year?

A truly scary option, the United States Vice Presidential Republican
Candidate
and current Governor of Alaska - Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin Halloween Viking
Hmm, I guess she didn’t get understand the memo regarding last year’s Halloween Party. It was a Nordic theme. Looks like she still won anyway, even though she didn’t really come close to qualifying.

Sarah Palin 7 Months Preggers “I can hide my belly in a sexy, yet sophisticated, little black business suit.”
Sarah Palin seven months pregnant
Goodness, her belly is HUGE, she looks like she’s going to pop any day now, right?

This is what Demi Moore looked like when she was seven months preggers . . .

Sarah Palin’s Witch Doctor . . .

Other potential options - “Sarah Palin Mayor of Meth”, “Sarah Palin Miss Alaska”, “Sarah Palin Soccer Mom”. Wow, and to think, the election isn’t even over yet, we’ve still got a few weeks to go . . . goodness, i’m sure we’ll have so many more choices to choose from. Maybe i’ll pull off one of those “couple costumes,” and we can go together as “Foreign Palin Policy“. One of us will be Russia, and the other Alaska, and we’ll stand on opposite sides of the room and say “I can see ya over there, behave yourself!”

Hey! Hey! Its Hey Champ!

Here’s a great video from Chicago’s, Hey Champ a hot new trio in the scene making some fresh tunes. The video is for the band’s new single “Cold Dust Girl“. This is one of those sneaky songs that you hear at night and wake up in the morning with its melodies still infecting your thoughts. Then you immediately want to hear it again. It’s just that fresh.

The first exposure to the world for the trio was when a blog accidentally posted their remix of Scenario Rock’s “Perfect Love Antidote” as Ed Banger’s distorto super producer Sebastian. When the remix was discovered that it was really Hey Champ, the trio’s take on the song was strong enough to gain plenty of acclaim. It is even available on itunes (Europe only) and was put out by a major label Sony.

Their sound can easily be compared to the likes of Van She, Cut Copy, Fred Falke and Les Rhythmes Digitales. Mixing rock with elements of house all based over an abudant amount of synth action. Sometimes playing out as a full band and sometimes doing dj sets, Hey Champ is paying their dues quickly. Already featured in UR Magazine with an upbeat, good times mix. Gaining bookings more and more and even getting rapper Lupe Fiasco attention enough for him to write about them on his blog. It is also entirely possible that the group will be scooped up at anytime by a record label.

Enjoy the video and the mp3 and check the groups myspace to keep updated.

Hold On! Hot Chip Touch Too Much

Hot Chip

HOT, HOT, HOT, CHIP!

They picked a fitting band name, yeah? I’ve been getting hit by Hot Chip from all sides, and I like it. They are currently out on tour in North America, i’m eagerly looking forward to their New York shows at Terminal 5, Oct 3 & 4.

I could tell you what the band’s been up to, but the email below from the band’s Joe Goddard, sums it up nicely. It’s always lovely when the band themselves take time to write. I’m just going to tag on a track and recent photos from their show in Tucson, AZ this past Tuesday, Sept. 23rd.

And since I too love the Ewan Pearson remix, and it’s my pick of the lot, give it a listen.

Hi, we are putting out a package of great remixes of songs from ‘Made In The Dark‘ featuring some of the best producers around at the moment.

Dave Taylor (Switch) is obviously killing it at the moment, his recent mix of Mystery Jets and his work for Santogold were great and we have been friends for a while, he did a great mix of ‘Over and Over‘ for us under his Solid Groove guise and if anyone has not heard ‘This Is Sick‘ by Solid Groove then search it out, it is responsible for the sound of a lot of recent records.

(personal note, not from Joe, but 100% agreed, Solid Groove - “This Is Sick”, is REALLY, REALLY, SICK INDEED!)

Dave has completed 2 mixes of ‘Hold On‘ and we liked them both so they both feature on the package. Mock and Toof also remixed ‘Hold On‘ and again, have been friends for a while, their label Tiny Sticks is consistently excellent and they have already featured on Death From Abroad as well as previously remixing “Over and Over.”

I think their mix of ‘Hold On‘ is one of the best mixes we have ever had. Ewan Pearson takes on ‘Touch Too Much‘ and the quality of his mix shows through pretty obviously, I think this mix will be played out by alot of people. If you don’t know Ewan he has been DJing and producing for a while now and his Partial Arts moniker is particularly good in my opinion, especially the ‘Trauermusik‘ release on Kompakt a couple of years ago.

Kollektiv Turmstrasse are one of Felix and Al’s favourite groups, they have been making excellent, melodic, very funky techno for a while and whilst not being the biggest name on the scene have been consistently excellent and responsible for a lot of big DJs ’secret weapons’.

I hope you like this stuff!

We are also putting the finishing touches to our next release, which is an EP of songs from ‘Made In The Dark‘ featuring new contributions from Robert Wyatt, which we are very excited about.

Meeting and working with him was genuinely lovely, look out for that in the next month or so.

take care,
Joe

The Rapture !K7 Mix - Unmastered

My favorite band, The Rapture, also DJ. They are soon releasing a mix on K7, and oops, it leaked. This is the un-mastered version. They have two of my favorite tracks back to back - Armand Van HeldenFlowerz” & Cajmere feat. Dajae - “Say U Will.” Paul Johnson’s “Get, Get, Down”, I think this was the tracks where he showed the world, not only could he produce, but also sing. Also included in the mix the unreleased track from the forthcoming - Dances With White Girls EP “Everybody’s Got to Make a Living”, which is soon coming out on their own label - “Throne Of Blood“, the EP is currently “in promo”, expect it to be making the blog rounds soon!

Death Set Live at Studio 1087 pt 1 of 2

May 15, The Death Set were welcomed near the end of the spring road by their Brooklyn family with an afternoon rooftop show for as many kids as could precariously crowd-swim the skies thereon. Ninjasonik, Bikes in the Kitchen, Newmore Switchblades, Rabbitfoot, and friends.

Pitchfork TV was there to capture it all in multi-angle full-frenzy view, part 1 of 2.

Miss OddKidd - ‘Don’t Be Afraid To Sweat’ - Remixes - Drop The Lime & Goldielocks

Miss OddKidd - Don't Be Afraid To Sweat - Remixes

So I’d heard of Miss OddKidd before - on myspace obviously, I was taken with her a little but perhaps dismissed her ever expanding friends list as hype!

Ok so to fess up I just got these tracks, I like them alot and I’m particularly fond of the turbo-charged Drop The Lime Remix of ‘Don’t Be Afraid to Sweat’. To add to this I have been dancing around manically to the Goldielocks Remix….check them both out below.

This little lady has been working with alot of young producers namely Rowdy Superstar, and Steve Mason aka Black Affair. Released this autumn, ‘Don’t Be Afraid To Sweat’ is Miss OddKidd’s first real release. With performances at Glasto, Bestival and all across Europe she’s definetly ready to be heard - whether you like it or not guys and gals!

I had a great week. I have been head over heels in love with The Presets music from the minute it reached my ears. Aria’s are the Aussie equivalent to the Grammy’s, and they were up against some stiff competition.*

On A Mission

Yet another track that escaped us the past few weeks, this one from Brooklyn’s newest residents, Designer Drugs, who’ve remixed “Innerspace” by the Australian four-piece Mission Control. Signed to etcetc, Mission Control, who don acid wash, plaid and tie dye (hot trend in Australian fashion?), sit amongst some of our favorites – Chicken Lips, Datarock, Digitalism, Mylo, PNAU, and The Knife.

Designer Drugs take “Innerspace” and do plenty of good things to it, namely picking up the speed, making it Dj friendly, giving it a bigger sound. And, we like that. Michael and Theodore of Designer Drugs are sitting in the top 5 at numero quatro for the Mariah Carey remix competition for “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time“. Love you long time? Maybe not. I’ve never cared for the screeching pop queen; rather irritating to my ears. But I support Designer Drugs and would love to see them snatch up the contest win! Cast your vote for them right here!

Look out for the September 13th release of Mission Control’s EP ‘Innerspace‘ and enjoy yet another great remix by Designer Drugs!
