Black Strobe & Arnaud Rebotini US Dates

What connects Norwegian death metal, French club anthems and London super-producer Paul Epworth? It sounds like a particularly intractable example of the six degrees of separation game. However, these seemingly irreconcilable points on the musical compass are linked by French dance rock four-piece Black Strobe. A simple enough answer. The explanation is going to take a little bit longer.

Not as long as it took the band – Arnaud Rebotini (vocals and programming), David ‘Siskid’ Shaw (guitars and keyboards), Bastien Burger (bass and keyboards) and Benjamin Beaulieu (drums) – to record their debut album, however. Burn Your Own Church is a record ten years in the making. Happily, it’s worth the wait. Few bands manage to combine guitars and electronics as successfully as Black Strobe.

Adult Swimming with Cage

It’s the wave of new media – When traditional places like TV networks incorporate non-mainstream music into their off shoot website products to add personality and showcase something fresh. What’s the latest example?

Definitive Jux’s artist Cage is coming out with a new album this year that will be available for FREE for download on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.

Unfamiliar? Cage is an American rapper from New York, who does self described progressive rap and no longer condones drug use with his lyrics. His life was so tumultuous growing up (imagine helping your dad shoot up heroine) that Shia Lebeouf is making his directorial debut shooting the video for “I Never Knew You” here in rainy Los Angeles, which will actually lead up to a feature length film with Lebeouf playing the young Cage.

Cage’s new album (and the first in 4 years) will be the follow up to 2005’s highly praised Hell’s Winter. Vice Magazine called it “strictly for the grown, warped, and sexy” which sounds right up this Trash alley.

If you like the track below, you can find the I Never Knew You EP this spring on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) and if you’re in the beautiful Austin, Texas at SXSW you’ll be able to see his first official performance this year.

Louis Vuitton Loves Stephen Sprouse

Stylenoir has teamed up with Trash Menagerie to create some great new guest content for all of your enjoyment! Over the coming weeks and months Stylenoir & Trash will endeavor to keep you updated with all the latest topical fashion and style news…but enough of that and on with the first post!

Friday 9th January, sees Louis Vuitton take a drastic makeover, a street makeover of sorts. With Marc Jacobs now as creative Director at Louis Vuitton things were sure to change. The first month into 2009 sees the release of the Stephen Sprouse tribute collection, which is simply amazing.

Stephen Sprouse was at his height of career in the 1980s with rock and street culture expressed through Day-Glo colours and micro-mini skirts. Sprouse made some of the decades boldest fashion and magazines simply loved it. He always pushed the boundaries even rumoured to borrow items from NASA for a collection in the late 80s.

Louis Vuitton have created a true homage to the designer, but knowing Marc Jacobs and the LV team nothing was going to be straight forward, always pushing the boundaries themselves Vuitton have even gone to taking to graffiti on their own store.

The collection itself is just stunning we see everything from high tops to dresses and tops with the neon graffiti emblazoned all over them. The iconic monogram bags have also been covered in the graffiti print bringing a whole new modern look to the brand.

But that is not all, Louis Vuitton have obviously been thinking this one out for some time, either that or the drugs have kicked in. First of all, the NYC store in SoHo doesn’t really look the same anymore, not now that there is a gigantic orange day-glo Louis Vuitton sprayed across the whole shop – which is quite fitting as the collection launched there today.

Secondly Vuitton decided to mark the occasion with some limited edition items. Namely an $8,750 skateboard. The Limited Edition skateboards come in a Louis Vuitton trunk with the signature monogram accented with a single Stephen Sprouse print on the side. The skateboard of course covered in neon print, which is going to stay that way because at that price it is going to be hung on a wall for people to stare at not grinding round the streets of New York.

Stephen Sprouse passed away from heart failure in 2004 after working with Marc Jacobs in 2001, so this is really Jacob’s tribute to him and the audacious fashion and art Sprouse created.

Drums of Death – dodfucksupanescorttune

To say that Scottish born, now London-based, Colin Bailey, whose devilish alter ego, Drums of Death, is doing stand-out things with music, wouldn’t even begin to scratch the surface of all that he has accomplished in the past year. Here’s a quick recap – Drums of Death has toured with Hot Chip, remixed Tricky’s “Council Estate”, DTL’s “Hear Me”, and several others, worked with Peaches, and released ‘Drums of Death Steps into the Ring’ EP in September on Greco-Roman. He was invited for a chat and to play a mix on Rob Da Bank’s show, and managed to find a spot on DJ Mag’s ‘Best British Breakthrough Producer’. DOD continues to play at top nights around the world and with 2009 in sight, he’s poised to takeover. Not bad for a guy from a small fishing town called Oban.

Whether it’s the curse upon Colin that causes him to churn out music with a deadly edge or his vast range of music influences – metal, jazz, hardcore punk, two-step garage, bass, grime – that gives his music all the right elements, one thing is certain, Drums of Death is straight-up fucking brilliant! Catch Drums of Death at GASH! TONIGHT at The Macbeth (U.K.), listen to his latest remix of Escort’s “Starlight“, and stay on the look out for more Drums of Death on Trash!!

Justice “A Cross The Universe” New York Premiere, Review, & Contest

Justice – A Cross The Universe – Trailer from industreate on Vimeo.

I saw the New York premiere of “Justice’ A Cross the Universe” last week. It’s a documentary of the band shot & produced by award winning directors Romain Gavras (”Stress”), and So Me (”D.A.N.C.E.”, “DVNO”) during the last 3 weeks of their Myspace sponsored tour in North America.

The screening was supposed to start at 7, I got there 20 minutes late, I thought I was going to miss it, but it was just starting. Members of the Ed Banger gang were in attendance, Busy P, So Me, SebastiAN, Amandine, of course Justice – Xavier and Gaspard.

I really thought one of best “characters” was the enduring, Christian bus driver. 100% Americana, 55 – 60 years old, reminiscing about singing in the church choir, practicing his vocal exercises, snapping shots of mountains with his camera phone, dealing with blown tires, and “crap” . . . literally.

Now throw the bus driver in with Justice, and their tour manager, “Bouchon“, English translation = bottleneck, stopper, plug. Bouchon has an obsession with guns, (I swear on one occasion he was in a Walmart shopping for one.) I think he is the most “gangster” French person i’ve come across in awhile, if ever. He’s definitely over the top.

Justice Music kissing

And last but not least, Justice. Some of my personal favorite moments – Xavier & Gaspard kissing – Gaspard having sex with an Asian girl that allegedly looked like Xavier. The duo shopping for 8 mil homes. (Can they really afford that?)

Justice A Cross The Universe

Lots of drunk girls freaking out, singing “We Are Your Friends” at the top of their lungs, lots of “OMG I love you guys!”, puking, fights, blood, and hotel room pillow fights. I learned that Xavier can play the piano, and quite well, he is also caught on film serenading Anthony Keidis from Red Hot Chili Peppers with his band’s own song “Under the Bridge“. The look on Keidis’ face is priceless. There are also cameo appearances by Diplo (using the bathroom), the Ed Banger clan, and various other “scensters”.

Justice A Cross The Universe Gaspard

It was an entertaining movie, certainly one for the fans, and it gives you more or less accurate inside look at what it’s like on tour in the land of Justice. It’s well done, considering the time restrictions it took to film, produce, and release the documentary by December 9, 08. The tour they were shooting ended in April of 08. Gavras and So Me do a great job of capturing the intensity of Justice‘ live performances. Quick cuts from revving up back stage to being right in the middle of a live dynamic sonic assault.

After the premiere, everyone headed over to hear Justice DJ at Webster Hall with SebastiAn and Busy P, who rounded out the night with old school Chicago House. Fun was had by all, and I felt like I was living a scene right out of “A Cross The Universe“.

If you live in Chicago, there is a screening of “A Cross The Universe” at The Metro on Nov. 14th, there are other screenings to coincide with their DJ gigs around North America, for more info visit UR CHICAGO.

As we speak, there is a contest running “Justice for All” – win a trip to Chicago on New Year’s Eve to hang out with Justice and So Me and party at Revolution Number 9, or take home cash. All you have to do is create a video, and get the most votes. The final winner will be chosen by Justice, So Me, Busy P, and other special folks. Maybe they will like your work so much you’ll shoot their next documentary?

Sign up and get full info at www.industreate.com/contest, create a video of what you did that was “Great in 2008“, then upload your video to www.Vimeo.com and tag it with “JST4ALL” and “TRASHMENAGERIE“.

As Big Stereo points out – “This is a contest for us too! We wanna hang out with you in Chicago so this is important, ha!*

* Trash Menagerie note to Big Stereo and the rest of ya’ll, may the best blog win!
