HeavyFeet – Wild for Life!

Heavy Feet come barging in like a herd of hungry hippos, grinding to dust the left over broken china from the Bull’s Greek party the night before. They’re animals. But don’t be fooled by the name, these Hot Steppers also know their way around the dancefloor like mice in balloons…..

RHYS FACT #1: If you are on the dancefloor and you have the choice of either an elephant or a women (or man) in stilettos stepping on your foot. Take the elephant as it’ll hurt less.

Speaking of Creatures great and Small, These Manchurian producers & DJ’s do like a bit of wildlife including DJing in Seal Pits in Ibiza with non-other than MC ROLFI HARRIS. Okay i made that bit up, but as Gabrielle once whined – “things can come true”, he’s pretty down with ye sick pets! You Heard Rolf Harris’ techno track in protest to Canadians murdering Seals?!?! – Check it, it’s dark.

And If the city of Manchester were a DJ then he’d be playing the likes of The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Oasis, New Order, Joy Division & The Smiths but at some point in the early hours, the City would need to step it up a little to keep the leafy fever moving through the vein pipes of the citizen citadel. Something of the same calibre… What i’m trying to say is, these guys are the shit and they’re not even putting a Donk on it!

Check out their MySpace for their latest bangers! Definitely check out the War remix if you like drum & bass. It’s a belter! And download these tunes pronto ya pussyclart doll!

Big Chill Festival Is Back

Last year we repped at the brilliant Big Chill Festival in the UK looking after the live art walls which included live painting from UK graf kingpins INKIE and XENZ, the acclaimed east London collective CutUp and the mysterious digital vs. analog artist and bassbin enthusiast KARBORN. Music-wise last year launched acts from Lykke Li to FLying Lotus, Caspa and Rusko to The Mighty Boosh. This year Big Chill is back, packing a line-up including Orbital (I saw their “final” gig at Glastonbury all those years ago as well as their return at this year’s Sonar Festival… yes, t’was epic), Chris Cunningham, David Byrne, Chrome Hoof, Metro Area, Telepathe, Toddla and Kode 9. From the 6th – 9th August in stunning surroundings (a rolling deer park with lakes and hidden quarries), get your tickets here.

Diverted’s Debut Album Reviewed

Live UK breakbeat act Diverted have been busy in the studio for what seems like an age now putting the final touches to their hugely anticipated first album which is being released on Air Recordings.  They have attracted a huge fan base that includes Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Justin Robertson, Eddie Temple Morris, Radioactive Man, and their tunes have received airplay and support from the likes of Plump Dj’s, Lee Coombs and Meat Katie.

Diverted have built their reputation for energetic live sets via their monthly residency at London’s Air, seeing them playing alongside acts including the likes of The Bays, Justin Robertson’s, Thee Earls, Kraak & Smaak, Minuit and The London Breakbeat Orchestra. In February this year, they opened at Breakspoll 2009 providing almost an hour of live breakbeat, with Lee Richardson drumming at the centre seeming to have the solid timing and consistancy of something you’d buy from Roland or Casio.

Breakspoll 2009 was the first time I had had seen Diverted perform live, having already bought Frederick, as well as hearing their vocal edit of dub-step Visions on YouTube, I was suitably impressed, and it only made me even more curious to hear what their debut album was going to sound like.

Diverted’s album sees them carry their own, but also team up with the likes of Nathan Flutebox Lee (The beat boxer that also somehow manages to play the flute at the same time) as well as Rhys Baker (Our Own Devices) and globetrotting Australian MC, Nine Lives the Cat. Stand out tracks on the album include Frederick, the dub step banger Visions, summer smasher Summer Hiding featuring the rather haunting harmonic vocals of Danielle James and Big Baby Fear.

The album sounds really polished, warm and there is a dark undertone to its sound. It features a wide, wide, wide range of musical genres on it, from your basic club style breaks to vocal driven dub-step to intricately drum filled glitchy electronica to some rather warm summer-esque jazz. There is seriously something for everyone, give it a chance, it’ll be the best £9.00 you could spend this side of a recession… better still also go see them live, you wont be disappointed!
