COACHELLA (countdown)

Happy Easter/Passover/3 Day Weekend for those of you with jobs.

In one week the hot smelly shit-storm that is Coachella is going to begin. Every year the lineup comes out and everyone says “Oh, it’s not that good this year” but then all those suckas end up going anyways. With the apparent exponential decline in quality this year’s Coachella festival in Indio, CA is either going to suck balls or rock my fuckin socks off. I hope it does both so I can be that bastard that tweets on my fabulous twitter page every 5 seconds and gets more followers.

Either way I think it looks pretty damn groovy. Bloody Beetroots, Crookers, Surkin, Para One, MSTRKRFT, The Presets, Crystal Castles, Klever, Sebastien Tellier, Murder City Devils… etc. etc. etc.

I’m so jonesin’ to see Mexican rock band Molotov, I can’t even imagine the craziness that will ensue when they play “Puto”

Molotov- Puto

Where will you be at Coachella? Tents or hotels?

And, most importantly, who are you looking forward to seeing?

In anticipation, I’m posting a few mixes/tracks here that are from previous Trash posts back in the day just to whet the appetite:

Crookers Mix 4 Loose Cannons

Bloody Beetroots NLLR Mixtape

The Presets – My People

*Note, the line up has definitely changed since they came out with that flyer. For actual lineup, please see the Coachella website.

LA Riots : Hard and Undocumented

John and Daniel make up the quickly rising group LA Riots known for killer remixes. Since the inception of this duo, their tracks have rocked many a party and also have recently been featured in the IHEARTCOMIX compilation CD done for Scion.

I caught up with John recently at the poorly organized mess of a festival Hard 13 in Los Angeles to chat with him more about the duo’s growing success:

bisouK: Tell our readers about the inception of LA Riots

John: Daniel and I have known each other for a while, we both go back to the NC drum & bass scene in the late 90’s. We both ended up living in LA, he started DJ’ing electro, and we decided to try writing an electro track. Things took off very quickly from there.

bisouK: How did you hook up with Undocumented Management?

John: Adrian and Mike had recently picked up their first act MSTRKRFT and were on the lookout for a promising hometown act. We were it. This was very early on, before they called themselves Undocumented.

bisouK: Your remixes are known to be killer, when can we expect some original tracks?

John: They’re coming. I’ve put a lot into finding our sound and its taken some time, I want it to be something very cool. The first few are close to completion, I’m really excited about getting them out there.

bisouK: How do you find tracks to remix?

John: The labels hit us up with offers, and we choose the ones we like.

bisouK: What would you say is the overall identity of LA Riots as a brand?

John: Dancefloor killers. . that’s what we do.

bisouK: You’re known to be the behind the scenes guy, can you tell TM readers about the differences in roles between you and Daniel?

John: He’s the DJ, I’m the producer. We both recognized how strong we’d be if we teamed up, and the dynamic works really well. I’m only behind the scenes in that I’m not the primary performer.

bisouK: Fave festivals you have played to date and why?

John: I don’t go on a lot of the gigs, I mostly only roll out when its local, so I haven’t been at a lot of the festivals we’ve played. For me, it was the first Street Scene in San Diego. It was very early on in LA Riots, the first show where we had all access, free food and drinks, and a trailer. That was a fun time.

bisouK: What are the goals you try to accomplish when making remixes and how do you differentiate your sound from others?

John: With the remixes, I tried to distinguish us from others by remaining as true to the original music as possible, while making the track kill an electro dancefloor. Most producers do their own thing, and throw in a few samples of the original over it. I liked to work in as much of the original as possible. I’m talking past tense though, our production sound is shifting big time, I’m not currently taking any remixes, and my approach to remixing may change after finishing the originals. Our sound is at a turning point, so we’ll see.

bisouK: Where do you see LA Riots transitioning and moving into in the next few years as the scene changes? Any new influences we should look for in your upcoming releases?

John: Rock. On the production end, a lot more rock. My favorites of the originals I’m working on could be on a rock radio station’s daytime playlist and can also kill a peak hour dancefloor. The first few completed originals will most likely be along these lines. I also have some deeper, moodier tracks cooking, and some straight up dancefloor tracks.

bisouK: Finally, what do you want to see happen when people listen to your music?

John: I want them to feel like a badass on the dancefloor.

LA Riots will be playing in SXSW on the 19th, 20th, and 21st. Definitely a show to catch if you’re in Austin, Texas!

JFK edits CCC remix “Nightlovers”

Alexander Technique and Van Scott, of the DANR music collective, in frigidly cold NY, are releasing a single called “Nightlovers” on Feb. 24th and it’s already been remixed by those with the ‘midas touch’ including, Acid Jacks, Nick Catchdubs (Fool’s Gold) and Chewy Chocolate Cookies.

The CCC remix was so well received by the JFK of MSTRKRFT, a man with impeccable taste, that he’s done an edit rumored to already be playing mid set for the duo. It’s the kind of track you can just picture being played in front of a huge crowd with sweaty youth screaming and grinding to…and it will leave your ears ringing! I find it impossible not to at least wiggle to it while in front of my computer.

DANR (Djs Are Not Rockstars) was founded with Princess Superstar and has become a record label with DJs and producers attached, that should be churning out a lovely collection of tracks this year, beginning with the ones below!

TRASH MENAGERIE SEPTEMBER RECAP

This is what Trash Menagerie was throwing down during the month of September. Features, interviews, parties, and plenty’a mix and MP3 download. We’re snuggling in for the busy month of October. Have you started thinking about your Halloween costume yet? We’re looking for ideas, so please hit us up and let us know if you’ve got any. Last year we gave you a heads up on how to MAKE YOUR OWN DAFT PUNK COSTUME. Hipster Runoff offered up a bit of inspiration, “WTF SHOULD I B 4 ALL HALLOW’S EVE”, But is it “ok” to be a Justice this year, if you were a Daft last year?

A truly scary option, the United States Vice Presidential Republican
Candidate
and current Governor of AlaskaSarah Palin.
Sarah Palin Halloween Viking
Hmm, I guess she didn’t get understand the memo regarding last year’s Halloween Party. It was a Nordic theme. Looks like she still won anyway, even though she didn’t really come close to qualifying.

Sarah Palin 7 Months Preggers “I can hide my belly in a sexy, yet sophisticated, little black business suit.”

Goodness, her belly is HUGE, she looks like she’s going to pop any day now, right?

This is what Demi Moore looked like when she was seven months preggers . . .

Sarah Palin’s Witch Doctor . . .

Other potential options – “Sarah Palin Mayor of Meth”, “Sarah Palin Miss Alaska”, “Sarah Palin Soccer Mom”. Wow, and to think, the election isn’t even over yet, we’ve still got a few weeks to go . . . goodness, i’m sure we’ll have so many more choices to choose from. Maybe i’ll pull off one of those “couple costumes,” and we can go together as “Foreign Palin Policy“. One of us will be Russia, and the other Alaska, and we’ll stand on opposite sides of the room and say “I can see ya over there, behave yourself!”

Anyway, Sarah, this song is dedicated to you . . .

A Black Hole is Opening

With all this talk of the LHC creating a black hole that will envelop the earth I think it’s about time that I write about the latest of up’n'coming Chicago producers, Black Holes. They are rather new to the scene here but they show little sign of n00biness. They are clearly some of the best producers to arise from our fledgling electro scene and certainly a welcome change from the mash-up and b-more that dominates the city’s hipster nights.

I’m not trying to belittle their abilities here, but describing their sound is rather simple. They sound like Crookers. So here’s where you think to yourself, “Why would I listen to this if I can listen to Crookers?” Well, firstly, Crookers is good and these kids are almost just as good. Two Crookers is better than one, my grandfather always told me. Secondly, I’m not sure if you guys are old enough to remember but about a year and a half ago (feb 7, 2007; about 8 years ago in blog years) I remember the fluokids posting a little tune called “Massive” by a then unknown duo called Crookers (later released on Pottymouth Records) that was somewhat overlooked because the general consensus was, “Oh, no big deal, they are just trying to sound like Switch.” Well, look where that got them. And I feel like Black Holes are capable of the same thing in the near future if they keep plugging away and develop their own sound so, when you download and play these tunes out now, you will have future ammunition for when they get big and you want to assert your authenticity. Although, now that I’ve said that, does it negate ones ability to use this as snob-fodder?

Anyways, they have certainly caught folks ears here in Chi and elsewhere. They were tapped to open for MSTRKRFT on their upcoming Chicago tour date. They also happen to be the winners of the Trouble & Bass Little Jinder remix contest that recently took place. Here’s a couple of their tunes to whet your appetite and you can hear their winning remix on their myspace.

MSTRKRFT – Fist of (oh my) God Tour

This weekend kicked off MSTRKRFT’s North American Fist of God Tour starting with Friday night in boiling LA at the Henry Fonda theater and WHAT A SHOW!

It being an all ages event, the youngins were all afresh in their scandalous attire, nymph-like dance moves, and damn did they get there early. By 10pm the place was packed and it was a sold out show!

Italy’s Congorock kicked things off with fun groovey dance beats, followed by Felix Cartal throwing down teeth gritting hard tracks that had people jumping like a mosh pit, then LA Riots, A-Track, and finally the night capped off with MSTRKRFT. Different from a normal MSTRKRFT show? Yes. In their set they included a lot of tracks that are going to be on their upcoming album!

With that many dj’s playing, I thankfully only heard one very noticeable track twice: “Bounce Low feat. NORE”.

This tour is worth the money to go to, it’s quality and the lineup is almost festival like. They’re going all over the US, so check the myspace page of MSTRKRFT for tour dates, etc. in your city.

Oh- and the follow up show on Sunday night at the El Rey was also great, the visuals looked really fantastic so kudos to the tech guys on that. The after party at LAX was a continuation of fun times with MSTRKRFT hitting the decks alongside Steve Aoki at the Banana Spilt Sunday party. Highlight of the after party: people having a big enough sense of humor to play fantastically cheesey club hits from the early 2000s.

Check MSTRKRFT’s MySpace for Fist of God tour dates!
