Drop The Lime Update

If you caught Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show on 9th October, you may have heard him praising Drop The Lime’s tune “Hear Me 2009” as one of the hottest songs in the world! Recently released on Beatport, you can choose your favorite amongst remixes by AC Slater, Buraka Som Sistema, Drums of Death and The Touch. With a main room residency at Fabric, it’s no wonder DTL has been spending loads of time across the pond. Last Thursday (10/23), the entire Trouble & Bass crew teamed up with Bok Bok & L-VIS 1990 for an extra smattering of bass, dub, grime, and ghetto house at ‘Night Slugs‘, held at East Village in Shoreditch. Check the photos from the night here and here.

Sometime during all of this, DTL had a chat with Tam Gunn over at Fact Magazine. I’m always peepin Fact, they’ve got the goods! Head on over to their side and see what DTL has been up to these days and what the future has in store. Excerpt below taken from DTL’s interview on Fact. It’s time to lose control!!!! And you can do so whilst listening to DTL’s latest mix for Fact, posted in our mixes section snatched by our TM Seattle rep, TheCrookedClef!

Tamm Gunn: How does playing London differ to playing New York?

DTL: “You can play anything here. I could drop the craziest bassline, and people will go off because they understand it. In America you’ve gotta trick them a little. Play some hits and reel them in, and then we can let them loose, but you don’t have to work at that here - you can just go out with a bang and people will get down man. They’re really into the music, and not just there to be seen with the music, or seen at a certain party… It’s more open minded - there’s more of a dance scene, and dance culture.”

Phonat Teaches Us Recycling

Phonat

Phonat - Learn to Recycle

In six minutes, Italian producer, Michele Balduzzu, aka, Phonat, has a created a eclectic production that pieces together house, hip hop, acid, drum n’ bass, electro, down tempo and a bit of everything in between. His debut track “Learn to Recycle” being released on on London’s Mofo Hifi, is a befitting title, and the task of tapping into so many genres and doing it up right is not an easy task. Phonat is breaking rules, and pushing boundaries, perhaps that’s why this newcomer is being championed and put into rotation by the likes of Annie Mac, Jules, Herve, and Norman Cook, who describes Phonat as a guy who “f**ks with all the rules”.

Keep him on your radar for 2009, as Phonat continues on his journey to redefine electronic music.

Beautiful Losers Premiere at The London Film Festival

Beautiful Losers London

The London Film Festival premiere of Aaron Rose’s Beautiful Losers documentary. Arguably the most important/most inspiring North American art culture/movement in the last 15 years. The after party features art and photography from Cheryl Dunn and for the UK - Ben Drury, Will Barras, INSA, James Jarvis and French, music line-up - Squeak E Clean, Nosaj Thing, Take, Patchwork Pirates, and Vamanos, exclusive extra screenings from the Shepard Fairey vs. N.A.S.A Project (Squeak E Clean and DJ Zegon) ‘Money’ video, other N.A.S.A collabo videos from their forthcoming album ‘The Spirit Of Apollo‘, extra rare BL film footage, a stills room soundtracked by Money Mark’s BL score, and giveaways from RVCA and ANP Quarterly.

Tickets for Beautiful Losers premiere here.
Tickets for after party here.

As mentioned, one of the artists involved in the London Film Festival screening of Beautiful Losers, is Nosaj Thing - the moniker of L.A.-based producer Jason Chung. Producing since the age of 13, he got his start working off a “hand me down” archaic PC, that struggled even with word documents. With a “donated” copy of Reason, a demo version of Ableton Live and a computer mouse (he couldn’t afford a MIDI controller), Nosaj Thing began making music.

Proving, when your focus is strong, all you really need is a machine that works.

Now 22, Nosaj Thing creates beat driven, experimental electronic music, and has received Artist-to-Watch accolades from XLR8R, remixed Daedelus and Elliot Lipp, won Plastic Little/Turntable Lab’s remix contest featuring MF Doom, and won L.A.’s prestigious Project Blowed beat battle.

Comparisons run along with Ratatat, DJ Shadow, and Boards of Canada. A survey of his record collection will turn up pieces from Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Radiohead, Daft Punk and Eric Satie. Nosaj Thing has been kind enough to share some music with us. Check out the tracks below. They are masterly crafted, intricate layers, of gritty, yet warm beats, beautiful synths, techy tweaks . . . i’ll go as far as saying they are down right sexy. Nosaj Thing is without a doubt, one to keep your eyes and ears on!

Nosaj Thing’s self-released EP, “Views / Octopus,” is now available on iTunes.

TRASH MENAGERIE SEPTEMBER RECAP

This is what Trash Menagerie was throwing down during the month of September. Features, interviews, parties, and plenty’a mix and MP3 download. We’re snuggling in for the busy month of October. Have you started thinking about your Halloween costume yet? We’re looking for ideas, so please hit us up and let us know if you’ve got any. Last year we gave you a heads up on how to MAKE YOUR OWN DAFT PUNK COSTUME. Hipster Runoff offered up a bit of inspiration, “WTF SHOULD I B 4 ALL HALLOW’S EVE”, But is it “ok” to be a Justice this year, if you were a Daft last year?

A truly scary option, the United States Vice Presidential Republican
Candidate
and current Governor of Alaska - Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin Halloween Viking
Hmm, I guess she didn’t get understand the memo regarding last year’s Halloween Party. It was a Nordic theme. Looks like she still won anyway, even though she didn’t really come close to qualifying.

Sarah Palin 7 Months Preggers “I can hide my belly in a sexy, yet sophisticated, little black business suit.”
Sarah Palin seven months pregnant
Goodness, her belly is HUGE, she looks like she’s going to pop any day now, right?

This is what Demi Moore looked like when she was seven months preggers . . .

Sarah Palin’s Witch Doctor . . .

Other potential options - “Sarah Palin Mayor of Meth”, “Sarah Palin Miss Alaska”, “Sarah Palin Soccer Mom”. Wow, and to think, the election isn’t even over yet, we’ve still got a few weeks to go . . . goodness, i’m sure we’ll have so many more choices to choose from. Maybe i’ll pull off one of those “couple costumes,” and we can go together as “Foreign Palin Policy“. One of us will be Russia, and the other Alaska, and we’ll stand on opposite sides of the room and say “I can see ya over there, behave yourself!”

Little Boots - New Remixes & Track Debut - Mathematics - Live!

Little Boots! We’ve all fallen for her over here at Trash Menagerie, and have in fact, been drawing straws over who gets to interview the lovely and talented Victoria Hesketh for a feature we’re running on her this month. And trust, its been a difficult thing to pull of, being that all of us are spread across many continents.

While we figure out the status of the interview, to hold you over, we have some new tunes to share with you, thanks to our friends at This Is Music. The video above is a brand new Little Boots track “Mathematics”. The sound quality is a bit low, but hold tight and wait for the “rave breakdown” at 2:30.

Hold On! Hot Chip Touch Too Much

Hot Chip

HOT, HOT, HOT, CHIP!

They picked a fitting band name, yeah? I’ve been getting hit by Hot Chip from all sides, and I like it. They are currently out on tour in North America, i’m eagerly looking forward to their New York shows at Terminal 5, Oct 3 & 4.

I could tell you what the band’s been up to, but the email below from the band’s Joe Goddard, sums it up nicely. It’s always lovely when the band themselves take time to write. I’m just going to tag on a track and recent photos from their show in Tucson, AZ this past Tuesday, Sept. 23rd.

And since I too love the Ewan Pearson remix, and it’s my pick of the lot, give it a listen.

Hi, we are putting out a package of great remixes of songs from ‘Made In The Dark‘ featuring some of the best producers around at the moment.

Dave Taylor (Switch) is obviously killing it at the moment, his recent mix of Mystery Jets and his work for Santogold were great and we have been friends for a while, he did a great mix of ‘Over and Over‘ for us under his Solid Groove guise and if anyone has not heard ‘This Is Sick‘ by Solid Groove then search it out, it is responsible for the sound of a lot of recent records.

(personal note, not from Joe, but 100% agreed, Solid Groove - “This Is Sick”, is REALLY, REALLY, SICK INDEED!)

Dave has completed 2 mixes of ‘Hold On‘ and we liked them both so they both feature on the package. Mock and Toof also remixed ‘Hold On‘ and again, have been friends for a while, their label Tiny Sticks is consistently excellent and they have already featured on Death From Abroad as well as previously remixing “Over and Over.”

I think their mix of ‘Hold On‘ is one of the best mixes we have ever had. Ewan Pearson takes on ‘Touch Too Much‘ and the quality of his mix shows through pretty obviously, I think this mix will be played out by alot of people. If you don’t know Ewan he has been DJing and producing for a while now and his Partial Arts moniker is particularly good in my opinion, especially the ‘Trauermusik‘ release on Kompakt a couple of years ago.

Kollektiv Turmstrasse are one of Felix and Al’s favourite groups, they have been making excellent, melodic, very funky techno for a while and whilst not being the biggest name on the scene have been consistently excellent and responsible for a lot of big DJs ’secret weapons’.

I hope you like this stuff!

We are also putting the finishing touches to our next release, which is an EP of songs from ‘Made In The Dark‘ featuring new contributions from Robert Wyatt, which we are very excited about.

Meeting and working with him was genuinely lovely, look out for that in the next month or so.

take care,
Joe

“Crying Blood” ties in VV Brown, Holland, Weatherall, Death In Vegas, !!!

I’ve never heard of VV Brown, or Hannah Holland, but apparently VV Brown is a new artist, so it’s good to know I’m not living in a hole. VV describes herself as a “do wop indie from outer space”

On remix duty - Hannah Holland, resident at the infamous Trailer Trash night in Shoreditch as well as running her own night Bastard Batty Bass. Hannah recently branched out into production, and for a first go, this his remix is solid. Watch out for the launch of Hannah’s new label Batty Bass, the first release ‘Shake It Up,’ delivered by Moody Boyz (aka Tony Thorpe).

The second remix, by a long time favorite of mine, producer and DJ - Andrew Weatherall. Also produces as Two Lone Swordsmen (Warp) and Major. He’s done numerous remixes, Beth Orton, New Order, FSOL, The Orb, My Bloody Valentine, and his Fabric mix rules. His 2006 release “The Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice” - Rotters Golf Club - is a must have.

I pulled up Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice, “Feathers“, and I instantly heard influences from Death In Vegas - Hands Around My Throat, and !!! - Is This Thing On - Rub n Tug remix. Listen for yourself . . .

The Wonders of Micachu

The greatest thing about starting this blog was not only to hear music that we encountered on our own, but also to be introduced to it from a wide range of sources, often times from the very artists that we feature. When Etan spoke of remixing an upcoming artist that I was unfamiliar with, I checked in on things. Good thing I did because my ears have been stunned by the lo-fi, leftfield pop sounds of East Londoner Micachu.

Classically trained since the age of four in violin and viola, 21 year old Mica Levi aka Micachu, creates imaginative, experimental pop music and mixtapes comprised of grime, garage, tropical, R&B, hip hop, folk – basically whatever she tosses in the pot. But it’s Mica’s obsession with inventing her own sounds from scratch, like the notable American composer and instrument maker Harry Partch she so greatly admires, that sets this wunderkind apart.

Currently in her third year studying music composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Mica was amongst four young composers to write new works for the London Philharmonic and in March, an original composition she wrote was performed at the Royal Festival Hall.

Micachu’s latest debut for Accidental, ‘Golden Phone‘, produced by the esteemed Mathew Herbert (released August 11th) is an addictive, whimsical, hand clapping good time. I’ve listened to it over and over and it still sounds refreshing and unique. As does Micachu’s must-have 33-track mixtape entitled ‘Filthy Friends‘ (out this past February), featuring the likes of Toddla T, Man Like Me, Ghost Poet, Kwes, Jack Penate, The Fields, Naked & the Boys, Suicidedogz, Golden Silvers and more, which had everybody talking.

Though I’ve yet to catch a live performance with her band, The Shapes (Mica - vocals, guitar, electronics and Hoover, Raisa Kahn - keys and Marc Pell - drums), they’ve been making huge waves abroad. Since Micachu is on The Windish Agency artist roster, I hope it isn’t long before we see Micachu and The Shapes heading for our shores!

Golden Phone‘, can be purchased via itunes, Rough Trade, Boomkat and all good digital platforms. Check out Micachu’s other project, Society of New Music and catch Micachu and The Shapes at Bestival – 5, 6, 7 September and at gigs listed on their Myspace calendar. And look out for an album coming sometime this fall!
