Kingdom Remixes Black Box

The end of the 80’s and the early 90’s was a time when dance music was more than alive, it was the beginning of the pinnacle of rave culture. The italo-house group, Black Box, helped paved the way for the explosion of electronic dance music into the mainstream and top 40, with a little help from singer-songwriter, Martha Wash. Undeniably, Ms. Wash made a massive impact on the music of Black Box, lending her powerful vocals on a number of their top hits, including their second single, “I Don’t Know Anybody Else”, off the Dreamland album.

As a producer that is into female-oriented genres, it’s no surprise that Brooklyn’s Kingdom, has taken the dynamic vocals of Martha Wash, from “I Don’t Know Anybody Else” and digs right into the soul of this remix. “It’s a casual remix I threw together really. Diva / Juke / Crunk / Trance – I really love hearing Martha Wash on the half-time crunk parts because you’re so used to hearing her on high energy beats,” says Kingdom. One that is sure to spread like wildfire. It’s fantastical and he nails it.

Kingdom has also been inducted in to the Fool’s Gold fam. and his debut single “Mindreader” featuring Shyvonne, along with some hot remixes, is headed your way! Peep it by clicking the link.

Catch Kingdom at Night Slugs, Friday 19 June at Egg, London, with special guests Geeneus, Spyro, Ben UFO, and residents Bok Bok and L-VIS 1990. Check his myspace calendar for more U.S. and U.K. dates and do a search for Kingdom on Trash Menagerie, for all things related.

My love for Crystal Fighters

Crystal Fighters Xtatic Truth Uploaded by MaisonKitsune

I don’t know when it was that I first listened to the fascinating sounds of Crystal Fighters, but ever since that magical moment, I’ve been obsessed and cannot stop listening to them. Their first single, “Xtatic Truth” captured my heart, and clearly that of French imprint Kitsuné, as they released the track and EP, this past May.

The music of this London based five piece runs a wide range (just listen to their mixtape below) and is supersaturated with such influences as South American and Basque folk traditions, house, dubstep, latin electro, soca-infused bassline, energetic vocals and rhythms, and plenty of cowbell. Their sound is slightly familiar; perhaps something straight out of an enchanted tale, which wouldn’t be far off from how Crystal Fighters came to be.

While clearing out her late grandfather’s home in the Basque countryside, front woman Laure discovered the manuscript of an unfinished opera entitled ‘Crystal Fighters,’ penned at the breakdown of his life. Inspired by this, Laure returned to London and shared her findings with her musician friends. Together, they turned her grandfather’s work into the brilliant work of their own.

The music of Crystal Fighters is nostalgic, future-minded and full of passion. Not only is their sound making waves, their highly energetic live shows have garnered loads of attention as well. Let’s hope it’s not long before they make their way over to the states, or better yet, book your plane ticket with a quickness and catch them in and around Londontown!

Make a purchase of “Xtatic Truth” at Turntable Lab featuring “Xtatic Truth” remixes by MayBB, Magistrates and Renaissance Man. Other remixes coming soon on a digital remix EP with 4 other tracks, including a remix by L-VIS 1990, Micromattic, Radioproof, Tomoki and Arcade. Meantime, have a listen to an oldish tune, “I Love London”, that had everyone talking!!

L-Vis 1990 FabricLive mix

Fabric’s tossed us this great mix from L-Vis 1990 as a little taster to his gig on Friday 5th June as part of FabricLive.

Looks like they’ve pulled in the nearest and dearest of UK’s finest and freshest – Radio1 legend Rob Da Bank, Sinden, Radioclit, Toddla T, it’s all sounding good – plus they’ve booked hands-down show must-have-of-the-year, Brighton’s legendary beatboxer Beardyman, who just won best live act at Breakspoll 2009. See it to believe it.

I forsee a long fun night steered by bass freaks, wonky movers and a balmy cigarette-tinged summer’s evening.

In the meantime, don’t burn yourself on this mix – I’ve listened to it a few times too many already. Would love to pontificate on it, but bed (UK time) beckons.

Room 1: GET FAMILIAR
Sinden, Duke Dumont, Toddla T & MC Serocee, Radioclit, De Tropix (Live), SBTRKT (Salvia/XL)

Room 2: ROB DA BANK & FRIENDS
Lemonage (Live), Beardyman (Live), Tim Exile (Live), Rob Da Bank, L-Vis 1990

Room 3: ASBO
Serge Santiago, Riotous Rockers, Alvin C

Fabric, 10pm-6am, £13/10 students & fabricfirst/ £6 after 3am. Nab your tickets off ticketweb or direct from Fabric.

The way it goes down – Two by two, the teams enter the arena and battle head-to-head: 4 tracks per team, from their MP3 players. As the stakes get higher, so do the screams of the crowd. Judging is simple: the winning team makes the crowd scream loudest. The decibel meter decides. Teams can’t win without digging deep in the crates and thinking outside the box. Expect crazy hype, fancy costumes and high tension!!

20% of ticket sales goes towards a charity chosen by the previous year’s winning team. This year’s Soundclash will go to Youth Action International, to help support the building of a much needed school in Liberia, as chosen by M.I.A. & Friends. Everybody wins!
