High Rankin ‘Occupation: Pimp and Gambler’

2009 saw big things for Will Rankin; a signing to the Cheap Thrills imprint, and a powerful first release, ‘No Money For Guns’. We knew the man wasn’t monkeying around. ‘The Airloom’ and its haunting video, got inside our heads, as well as his relentless Glade Festival mix and fine remixes for the likes of The Count & Sinden, Kevin Rudolf and Skunk Anansie. Beyond music, Mr Rankin’s harsh and humorous persona had us spitting out our food and drink on more than one occasion via his tweets and blog. Undoubtedly, good entertainment at either destination.

The next step in the High Rankin story takes the form of an EP entitled: ‘Occupation: Pimp and Gambler’, out now exclusively on Beatport and due for general release via Cheap Thrills, 15th February. Eagerly anticipated, it’s everything you’d expect from High Rankin. He’s resurrecting his label, ‘Suicide Dub’ in the next few months and “looking to sign some hot shit.” Get on that here. His latest mixes will melt your brain, especially February’s ‘Fury Rank’. Nothing quite gets as brash as this. Strap yourselves in and enjoy the ride.

DETBOI – THE IRISH BASS MONKEY

Detboi - The Hooligan Eskimo

Detboi is a freak. A bass freak! Ask the man himself “What is a Detboi?” and he’ll give you a straight answer: “Someone who tried out for Boyzone and never made it”. It’s obvious to everyone that Louis Walsh missed a trick there!!! But with Boyzone reforming for a few last ditch recession essential penny pinching concerts, i think it’s definately time for this Irish star to shine… cue spotlight.

With a look similar to that of an Aye-aye (google it), a sound as fruity as mangoes and a luck that would rival Noel edmonds with a bunch of numbered boxes you know you’re onto a sure winner. So, you’re probably wondering why you haven’t already heard of the young man? Well it’s quite simple says detboi, “Cos im not making dubstep. innit. rewind. Im big in the Philippines tho”. And if the Philippines say “Hey” then you, must surely say “Ho!”

Enough of this nonsense! Get on and listen to the music…..

Oh and please don’t forget to annoy detboi on his myspace with your Aye-aye impersonations.

Last but not least: “Jungle Steppers” – from Herve’s Ghetto Bass mix CD

Hervé and partner-in-crime Sinden, the original London rude boys

London producer and DJ Hervé has issued “Jungle Stepper” – the last track on his newly released 36-track mix CD “Ghetto Bass”" – as a little teaser for us all.

The CD which was released on 16 February, sounds like a big ol’ dirty mashup, with loads of his remixes and sound that spans the party genres: bassline, electro, dnb, dubstep and house (see tracklisting below). The CD is packed full of crowd-pleasers, such as Fake Blood’s “Mars”, Mr Oizo’s “Gay Dentist”, Rico Tubbs, and a remix of an original party tune, Human Resource’s “Dominator”.

“Jungle Steppers” is kinda what you’d expect – dub-drenched tune with a jungle breakdown, it’s a squelchy track that gets better once the break kicks in.

Never heard of Hervé? Known to his mates as Joshua Harvey, he also records under a multitude of monikers: The Count, Voodoo Chilli, Action Man, Dead Soul Brothers, Speaker Junk and Young Lovers – and possibly more.

Hervé hangs out in his house/studio a lot and occasionally leave London to DJ out (see dates below), sometimes producing sidekick Sinden. He also runs a record label in his spare time called Cheap Thrills.

It might help if I mention that he made the ubiquitous “Beeper” tune that’s run rampant across the garage/bassline land – see, now the penny drops! Get familiar on Beatport.
