It’s our great pleasure to introduce to the Trash readers the lovely and amazingly talented Hannah Holland from London. Operating as a resident at Trailer Trash first and now at the helm of the infamous Bastard Batty Bass party, Hannah has played Room One at Fabric, has toured all over Europe, and just returned from a tour through Australia.

Featured only one other time here on Trash for her work on V V Brown’s “Crying Blood,” Hannah’s production work is poised to flood your iTunes and club speakers through out 2009. So we thought we would chat with her about it and see what she is feeling right now, what has inspired her, and what exactly Bass means to Hannah Holland. With a record label and a single on its way in November. It’s no doubt that Hannah is one of the most hard working and visionary DJs and producers in the game! Get your All-American welcome wagons ready…Oh, and she did an exclusive mix for us because we’re special. It’s bass, all over your face.

So first off, thank you so much for participating in an interview for Trash Menagerie. It’s been super exciting to watch different readers pop up all over the globe and we’re honored to have a world renown dj/producer to tell everyone what’s up! I know you’re crazy busy and you even just got back from Aussie-land! How was your trip?

Hello! Its my pleasure, Aus was pretty immense. Traveling across to the other side of the world and meeting people who have been to your club and listen to your music , its a real honour. The Aussies have been very supportive and i cant wait to go back.

Now tell those of us who don’t know how long your Bastard Batty Bass party has been running and how long you’ve been in the game?

I’ve been djing in clubs for about 6 years now and started playing with decks about 8 years ago. BBB has been running for two years now, as one off parties, but as a monthly night for 8 months, its a haven for people who r fed up with the same old shit, we like to PARTY and aim to make u shake yourself stupid, to the sickest tunes and almighty vocal dynamics of Mama and MC Chickaboo.

What were some of your earlier influences to inspire you into electronic music?

The first electronic music that i heard were things like On A Ragga Tip by Sl2 and tracks from Shut Up And Dance, rave tunes that had crossed over into the mainstream and were heard by 10 year old ears like mine! Next came jungle when i was 13 and i was just hooked, locked onto pirate radio stations in my area and going to underage raves.

In particular it’s interesting to watch this “genre” Bass and Heavy Bass start to take form. From Trouble & Bass in NYC to the work Starkey and Dev79 are doing with Street Bass in Philadelphia and the Tomb Crew in London and then obviously you, there seems to be this musical obsession with whatever Bass means to each of you. I’ve heard even that Bastard Bass is becoming a somewhat of a genre in your town! Therefore, what does Bass do for you? And why do you think it’s important to emphasize the bass heaviness? What genres does this term cover?

People started referring to my sets as Batty Bass , as the type of music i play is hard to describe as a whole genre, even through it sounds as if its part of the same genre, whether its a house, breaks or dubstep tune, there’s an element in it that i pick out that makes it flow. Obviously the name comes from the night. For me, bass makes the warmth/aggression and the sex appeal of a record, when u hear a great bassline it makes u feel dirty on the dancefloor , as it taps into your soul! If a track makes me screw my face up like ive smelt something bad , ill play it! Bass is the meat of a record for me, but it doesnt have to dominate and be obvious, artists from Martin Landsky and Jamie Jones, who’s bass has roots in detroit techno to Mark Romboy and Oliver Hunnetmann who sounds are electro/tech through to house from Oliver $, Afrojack, Bart B More, Bass Kleph, breaks from peeps like Bassbin twins and Diverted, who’s bass is the dirtiest you ever heard, to some dubstep artists like from Caspa and Woogie, and lil jungle from peeps such as Omni Trio. I guess for me it steams from what i grew up with , its deep inside my soul! At Batty BAss I play a 5 hr set, and go across the spektrum from new york garage, to tech house, to a lil bmore, balie funk, to house , techno , garage, dubstep and jungle and blend it so it flows as its own sound.

Also this brings to mind the influence of UK dance music on American dance music. Most everything I play or hear in the club these days is from across the pond! Now of course Baltimore Club and Chicago House has been crucial in this exchange between the States and the UK, but do you think there is something special in the water over there?

The UK has a huge legacy of dance music and no matter what it will continue, people are so passionate about it. From, grime, to fidget , to dubstep, it all comes out of need to express through the dancefloor and a deep love of raving.

I just mentioned some different artists working in this ambiguous “Bass” genre. Who are some artists you’re looking forward to in 2009? Anybody specific to the States? (Canada is obviously doing some big things too).

The artists i am keeping my eyes on are : Solo(UK), who is my studio engineer, he has some BIG tunes coming that will blow you away. From Canada i am loving the huge talent of Woogie, who will be releasing one of his genre crunching tunes on Batty Bass Records next year. I think we have only seen the tip of the iceberg from people like Oliver $ , Duke Dumont , Jamie Jones and Worthy and whatever Dirtybird release!

How about new sound developments? Are you feeling anything up and coming from different parts of the world or even within the UK? I know I see Ragga continuing to play a more and more important role in bass music, especially with Machines Don’t Care and the work Toddla T is doing. Are hoping anything new will catch on soon?

Ragga has ALWAYS been a huge role in bass music. Ragga , dub, reggae is the reason bass music exists, every so often producers go back to using those style of vocals. Dubstep is a genre which i can feel being mutated and forming new styles. the dubstep community are pretty purist, but i think the music’s influence will spark some interesting new ideas, I am always looking to it when im in the studio. In terms of new sounds, im hearing a lot of african and gypsey sounds in new house music, very percussive and moving away from huge bass. We’ve had things like fidget and dubstep break the mould, I feel we are having the quiet before the storm, its bubbling, its coming, something brand new….

What are some of your hopes with Bastard Batty Bass? Trouble & Bass seems to be creating a great relationship with the Nightslugs party. Do you have any similar desires to bring your party to the States in a bigger way?

You people better watch out over there, the BAtty Bass Bitches are coming for you next year. We are planning to tour the soundsystem, myself , Mama and MC Chickaboo, we will burn any house down with our furious show!

What projects can we look forward to from you in 2009?

We are just getting Batty Bass Records off the ground, so watch out for the infiltration of batty next year! 2008 is the first year i have had tunes released, so expect a whole lot more productions.

Do you have any greater production aspirations? Your work with Mama Shamone has been really interesting and great. I know I’d love to see the return of the diva in the club scene.

Thanks, i hope to do an album with her sometime in the future, as far as diva’s go, she’s the bastard love child of Ol Dirty Bastard and Grace Jones! I will be working on more solo stuff like my release on Playtime, which have a deeper techier edge for late night skankin.

Lastly, do you have any wise words for those of us out there starting parties in our cities, pushing labels, production or a new sound?

Work you ass off!!!! This game aint for slackers, you got to push all the time but in the right way, dont overload people with stuff. You have to make your art stand out from the rest, whether its a party, label, tune or sound, make it yours , unique and true to your heart, then people will feel its the real deal.

And out of curiosity, how do you perceive the battyness of our current political climate!? And do you have couches prepared for your American friends when John McCain dies from a plastic surgery misshap and Sarah Palin becomes President of the United States?

We are all praying for you, brothers and sisters ;) x

Trouble & Bass Releases!

MATHHEADS NEW RELEASE!!!!

TM’s favorite bass boys, Trouble & Bass, have been quite busy lately and have a massive string of various releases and compilations forthcoming. To mark their latest release of Math Head’s “Turn The Music Up” EP with Palms Out, hitting online stores and limited vinyl, they provided us with a sample from the EP in the form of the heaviest, bassiest tune from the T&B camp yet. It makes Proxy’s Dance In Dark sound like a nursery rhyme.

And since they are so generous they’ve also given us yet another remix of Drop The Lime’s biggest hit to date “What I Need” this time from Top Billin’s Sharkslayer from Finland. He remains in the same heavy bass vein but with a taste of garage and a think break. DTL’s four track digi-EP “Like Thunder”, containing “Good Inside”, “I Love New York” and “I Want 2 Know”, will do wonders to your brain. Be sure to check Drop The Lime’s Fabric mix on Trash, here.

Jack Beats - Get Chatty & Premiere “Violator” Remix

jackbeats

Holy Shit! There aren’t two better words to say when hearing a JACK BEATS track. These gentlemen’s jaw dropping introduction came through the Trouble & Bass released Boy 8-Bit ep, “Fog Bank” (buy it here), a track that made many heavy weight dj’s top ten list before it was even released for purchase by the general public. Since that release they’ve had a steady flow of top shelf, high quality remixes ranging from grime punk rapper, Trip, to The Black Ghosts and fellow bassmaster AC Slater (hear that on the crookers essential mix) and more. It makes one need to know who these super producers are and why are they so amazing.

Turns out Jack Beats are veterans to the scene with insane credentials. The duo is comprised of Dj Plus One from the Scratch Perverts and Beni G from Mixologists, both award winning turntablist crews from London and world renown djs. At 19 years old, Dj Plus One, won the 2000 Vestax DJ World Championship in Tokyo and placed 2nd to A-trak in the ITF World final in LA. A year later he went on to win the ultimate title, 2001 World DMC Champion, beating Kentaro and Klever, to become the first triumphant UK contender since 1989. Beni G is currently grime rapper Plan B’s tour dj and a former DMC & ITF DJ Champion and 2-time Urban Music Award (UMA) winner.

Even with credentials that amazing and awe inspiring they were able and willing to provide Trash Menagerie with an interview and the premiere of their remix of White WilliamsViolator“!!!

sirhan: So you 2 are from scratch perverts and mixologists respectively but how do you come together and make “jack beats”?

Jack Beats: We come together to make jack beats through a mutual love of rave music, cups of tea and a fair amount of beer!

sirhan: Whats the inspiration? And who’s influencing you?

Jack Beats: The inspiration is hip hop and bassline based club music mainly- we’ve been hip hop and jungle kids for years- but we’re also big into our house and electro, dubstep and grime- we just like to put all those things in the pot and see what comes from it… Its a simple concept really.. Its not really so much who, but what- old school rave, 80s hip hop, dubstep, jungle are all big for us right now!!

sirhan: How are things going so far?

Jack Beats: Almost too well. Jack beats was an accident in all honesty. We started making some crunked hip hop type beats a few years back for a laugh- We got into hybriding that with the fidget and dubstep shit that we were feeling, and that formed the basis for sound we have now.

We chose a name we thought was fitting as an alias because we had a remix coming out and we needed to. Then we set up a myspace under that name, with no information on it- just music, in order to see if anyone actually felt the tunes…

We didn’t want any preconceived ideas of what we’d sound like as plus one and beni g - as we wanted to do something fresh, and different from what we were known for and we wanted honest feedback! Fortunately people seem to be really feeling it and we are busier than ever, and we’ve not even really got started yet. We’ve been fortunate enough to have had good support from key heads like boy 8 bit, touche and sinden, and that has really helped us.

sirhan: The remixes have been on fire, you playing shows? and when you do, what will be the set up?

Jack Beats: Yeah we’ve started to get shows booked in as jack beats, i guess cos our remixes have been bubbling away, although we never really started this as a means to be in the clubs, as we tend to live there anyway!! However it’s wicked to start playing out fully the sound we produce… since were both pretty busy with our other dj work, its only ever gonna be 1 of us doing the gigs though. We both push the boundaries as dj’s, for a living, so i guess regardless of who you will see playing as jack beats, you can be sure we know what we’re doing!!

sirhan: Where do you look forward to playing the most?

Jack Beats: Any gig with seb chew or martelo…fabric always a great place to spin too.

sirhan: Since Jack Beats is a duo any solo work you plan on putting out?

Jack Beats: Jack beats is a still side line project for us- so we’re both working full time on the other things we are affiliated with, and also now and again on solo projects- though there are no scheduled solo releases right now, just jack beats releases.

sirhan: What will the orginal work sound like?

Jack Beats: The sound we have through our remixes is the sound of jack beats- so expect the original material to follow suit… We are just aiming for it to be one louder.

sirhan: Tell me about Ahead of the Game?

Jack Beats: Ahead of the game is a label we set up originally as a stable for quality hip hop and grime music hybridized with other genres such as jungle, dnb, dubstep, house etc. We’ve had 3 releases so far, and we are planning more. So far its simply always been about putting out quality and not quantity with aotg- and we want every release to be really hot- so that’s why we’ve taken our time with it.

sirhan: Any producers or djs we should look out for?

Jack Beats: Boy 8-bit, martelo, fake blood, duke dumont, proxy, skream, caspa and rusko.

sirhan: Any funny stories?

Jack Beats: If you play fake blood records backwards on 45 they reveal his identity!

and as promised…

White Williams - Violator (Jack Beats Remix)

and for good measure they also gave us their remix of Does It Offend You, Yeah?

Radioactive Man album GROWL - Out Now !

Radioactive Man

Radioactive Man’s second album GROWL was released on Monday, much to the patient anticipation from long-term fans. Already there’s a good buzz about it here in the UK. The album was released on his own label, Control Tower, in association with Fabric Records.

Keith Tenniswood dishes out a lot of squelchy electro in GROWL to satisfy even the most jaded raver, with healthy heaps of dubby bass to kick your teeth in for good measure. GROWL is electronic music for those times when you’ve had too much party and need to sit in the shade for a while and regain your sanity.

From the bouncy minimalist “Kristiina” to the ethereal “Up in the Air”, there’s a lot of depth and complexity to get into with GROWL. Old school electro lovers are really in for a treat. I won’t explain, just have a listen. Musical partner Andrew Weatherall sings on “Double Dealings”, while Dot Allison provides the St Etienne-esque vocals for “Nothing At All”, providing the largely electronica album with light relief, although I would have been perfectly happy without as well. It’s clear that the four-year period of gestation made this album a well-thought out, finely crafted piece of electro goodness. Nice one.

Tenniswood explained the reason for the 7 year gap from his debut album: “I’ve been so busy with Two Lone Swordsmen stuff and DJing, that I haven’t had the time to put it out, so this is a real culmination of a long period of time for me. I wanted it to be pretty dancefloor, but still the kind of album you can pop on at home and enjoy on headphones.”

Word of advice: skip the headphones, just piss off your neighbours!

ALSO: If you fancy catching Radioactive Man this summer, he’s on at Glade Festival’s main stage in July. He played at the recent 3-day neo-rave armageddon Bangface Festival in Camber, which I went to - his set fit in quite nicely amongst the INSANITY of Squarepusher, Alterego, Ragga Twins, Model 500, Venetian Snares, and co -MORE ON THAT SOON!

growl album cover

Here’s a selection of my favorite tracks - have a listen. Apparently, if you buy the album, you’ll get 2 free tracks via myspace.

It’s on sale pretty much everywhere - grab it!

Radioactive Man - Double Dealings - Growl

Radioactive Man - Up In The Air - Growl

Idiotbox’s Supermodel - The Remixes featuring Sam Hell

Supermodel-The Remixes

Take a perfectly good progressively-acid house tune, drop it in the hands of a couple of electro house DJ/producers and what do you get?

Itchy complusive electro house and some damn good remixes.

So what are we starting with? Idiotbox’s original “Supermodel” is an angry musak version of Kraftwerk’s 1978 hit “Das Model”, underpinned with an insistent, driving house beat.

Drop in 4 remixes….

1) Chicago electro-house producers Paul Anthony and ZXX put a whole big electro shine on to that mofo. But is it filthy enough? Maybe.

2) Onionz give us a softer, more tribal house spin, with that ‘chill-out’ vibe about it.

3) Simon Baff’s version is like what NFL would play as their theme tune if football actually declared itself a gay sport - the remix teases out the original “Das Model” chorus (”She’s a model and she’s looking good”) to a “Copacabana” synth. Perfect.

4) Last but not least is UK’s Northern breaks darling Sam Hell unleashing his inner electro-house diva. Nice. Sam Hell is not afraid to straddle the fence, a dichotomy his label Sinister Recordings is well aware of and accepts.

Check it out the Sam Hell remix here.

Idiotbox’s Supermodel remixes (Dirty Fabric Digital) are on sale now on Beatport.

KMD meets SMD

simian mobile disco meet kmd

OK folks yes its that time you have been waiting for - KMD managed to get to grips with the duo whom she ripped off with her name, and boy was it fabulous. I managed to tie Jas Shaw (of Simian Mobile Disco) down for a quick chat before he escaped again to continue on their hectic schedule. We talked about their new EP - Clocks, The Chemical Brothers & ‘Tits & Acid’ obviously….

Kimberleysmobiledisco: Why release this EP now?

Jas Shaw: This new LP is a way for us to draw the line under the previous mobile disco sessions. The record basically contains tracks that we absolutely loved and were personally my favourite, but we just couldn’t put them on the first album, as the structure didn’t sit quite right. This EP allows us to lay the past to rest and start on the second album fresh.

We felt that by distancing the first and second albums there is no danger of the creative process being damaged, plus by releasing the EP we relieve the whole ‘second album syndrome’ that has so clearly plagued a lot of artists in the past.

We really want to get onto writing new stuff; we are already booked to go into the DFA studio, which is very exciting.

KMD: So, tell us about the SMD way of laying down new tracks

JS: It doesn’t take long to write stuff at all, and it’s definitely a spontaneous process for us in the studio. Both of us often put melody ideas down separately and then come together to experiment as that retains the fun element and gives us that all important starting point for new tracks.

Our main downfall is buying copious amounts of gear; seriously we spend loads! Analogue gear is the key.

KMD: There are a lot of electro wannabee wizzkids out there, so you have any tips?

JS: Keep away from software! Computer based music always sounds so stiff, particularly in the transition from studio to stage. Try to avoid too much programming if you can. We tend to stick to Pro Tools, which we use like a tape machine alongside hardware.

I am personally always loathe to any restrictions placed on me, however I truly realise the importance of deadlines now, mainly because the more time we get from people to complete things the more get tied up over analysing things instead of getting the job done. My girlfriend is a teacher and she says the broader the brief you provide a class with the harder they find the task as it becomes too much to consider. So along those lines is important to consider deadlines – they help immensely in the long run to keep focus.

KMD: Your Mix Mag CD created immense disco fever for KMD, do you have any plans to do another?

JS: Yes! We are going to do a Fabric Mix. [KMD faints]. Fabric have been really good to us, especially in the early days of SMD and its time we returned the favour by doing a mix for them.

KMD: Can we expect it to go off the beaten path like the Justice mix?

JS: [After an explanation of why Justice didn’t release the mix] Wow, I wondered why it hadn’t been released. Maybe we will go down a heavy prog route, haha!

KMD How was touring with The Chemical Brothers?

JS: They are real dudes. Their live set makes ours look a bit shit really! It takes them like 12 hours to set up before a show, as a lot of it has to be programmed. I think when you want to incorporate audiovisuals and tailor your show to stadium-sized audiences you really have to raise your game.

KMD: You have a pretty hectic schedule how do you deal with it all?

JS: It’s bad, we say ‘yes’ too much. Both of us are very close to having an episode! We only got back from Paris the other day and as soon as we got off (more…)

And The Winners Are….

Stanton Warriors accepting Best DJ award
Stanton Warriors accepting “Best DJ” award, photo courtesy of Sharon Alboni

Breakspoll 2008. It’s over. I went, got trampled on by the feet of a thousand breakbeat fanatics, but I’ve lived to tell the tale.

Fabric, Thursday 28th February, London. Imagine a sea of acid house ravers, gay house boys, chavs, and a myriad of sub-genre representatives dancing in a very small dark and sweaty box. Watered-down drinks at £5 a pop. The only glimmer of light breaking through the blackness and shining onto upraised hands produced by lasers. Then, hearing some of the world’s best speaker-bashing breakbeat. Nine hours of back-to-back breakbeat sets. Sick.

Highlights include seeing Atomic Hooligan (recently featured on TM) perform just after scooping up an award for best live act, dancing to Deekline & Wizard’s bass-heavy set, bumping into General Midi, and last but not least my mate Niall finding us a room-sized hole in the wall to dance in.

Atomic Hooligan performance
Atomic Hooligan delivering a belter, photo courtesy of Sharon Alboni

It was all a bit much for me. Fabric was rammed to the gills, and there wasn’t a second that I wasn’t nudged, pushed, or elbowed out of the way. Half the people were munted, shuffling aimlessly the entire night in and out of rooms. Bless the hard-core breaks lovers, who kept the dance floor nice and warm.

Next year I’m either reserving front-row seats or going whole hog and joining the march of the dead!

I know it’s slack of me to go all that way & not announce the winners - it’s been a long week.

It’s Breakspoll, Baby!

Breakspoll audienceDJs at Breakspoll
Photos from Breakspoll.com

Thursday 28th February is the one day of the year that I hold clear in my diary. Wanna know why? It’s Breakspoll, the international breakbeat awards ceremony, celebrating the best and brightest of DJs, producers, record labels, shops, club nights, promoters and everyone who makes the breakbeat scene happen world-wide.

The awards will take place at London’s legendary club Fabric, starting at 9pm and finishing (finishing? yeah right!) at 6am, treating audiences to nine-hours of a killer lineup including live performances from Atomic Hooligan, Dub Pistols, Kraak & Smaak, Rennie Pilgrem, Deekline & Wizard, Quest & Odissi, and Slyde. Loads of great DJs from the UK, plus breaks from France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Spain. see below for full line up I am especially psyched to see some of my edgier favorites battling it out including Dopamine (vs Diverted), Screwface (vs ED209), and Hexadecimal (vs GrooveDiggerz).

The line up for the afterparty is also enviable, with a TM favourite Sam Hell on the rota, as well as Brighton “local boys” Ed Solo and Skool of Thought.

I saw Hexadecimal dj last year, when we had him down for Slackers Convention, and his set was awesome. He was last year’s Breakspoll Breakthrough DJ of the Year. Be interesting to see who smashes that one.

There are some new categories this year, including Best Small Club/Event and Best Live Act. The former category is great for supporting the smaller and/or newer promoters who try to keep the love alive in all pockets of the world; the latter category recognises that there’s more diversity to the genre than just DJ sets.

The awards started in February 2001 with an online voting competition, back when breaks was in its infancy. Break fans know that the rest is history. See you there !

Justice’s Nixed Fabric Mix

Justicecross

“We didn’t want to do just another boring mix, so we put together a selection of tunes we absolutely love, mainly weird disco tracks and French novelty acts,” Justice’s Xavier de Rosnay told Norwegian newspaper Dagsavinsen. “But Fabric turned it down. They weren’t ready for something like this. Maybe we’ll put the mix out ourselves. People should really hear it, they’d be surprised.” That is exactly what the Parisian duo did, calling it, “Justice Xmas Mix”.

Fortunately, Joshua from URB posted the nixed Fabric mix on Friday, and it’s certainly an eclectic, pretty little number. Chock-full of oldies, complete with two lovely tunes, Rondo Veneziano - “La Serenissima” (great video below) with some Justice mixed in, and Korgis – “Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometimes”, heading straight into one of my 2007 favs, Midnight Juggernauts, ending with Todd Rundgrens, “International Feel”. Thanks Joshua!

Todd Rundgren – International Feel
Here we are again, the start of the end,
but there’s More
I only want to see if you’ll give up on me
But there’s always More
There is More, International Feel
And there’s More, Interplanetary Deals
But there’s More, Interstellar Appeal
Still there’s More, Universal Ideal
Still there’s More, International Feel
I swear something lies
in your ears and your eyes
‘Cause there’s More
You hear and you see yet you do not believe
That there’s always More
(I know)
