Rumble Lounge at Rodan, Chicago

Celebrate fall and it’s darkness at the monthly takeover of ‘Rumble Lounge’ at Rodan, Chicago, where minimal, subtle and moody sides of dubstep and techno and the increasing overlap between the two are explored. A night for casual listeners, aficionados, and the curious alike to enjoy a relaxing environment and appreciate the texture in the more subdued stylings of dubstep, dub-techno, uk funky, minimal house and techno with DJs Olin and akademy. Last month was fantastic, this month should be even better. Nuff said. Peep aKademy’s mix below for an array of deep dub step/future dub/deep tech house and Olin’s mix of deep house/tech house and a bit of future dub.

Evil Reigns Supreme with Gatekeeper

All Hallows’ Eve marks the perfect occasion for surrounding ourselves with the dark and evil, mysterious and haunting visions and sounds that lurk on this wicked day. Leave the sanctity of your home and enter into a world of devils, Grim Reapers, ghosts, ghouls, demons, witches, goblins, vampires, zombies, skeletons, bats, and blood covered monsters. Our friends at Fact Magazine have just the thing to see you off into the holy night; FACT Mix 96 features Chicago’s Gatekeeper, the first signed to Kompakt’s Michael Mayer and Jon Berry’s new label, Fright – “dedicated to exploring the realm of serial killer symphonies for back alley discos of the macabre.”

I have a high appreciation for this mix, as it brings back memories from days past, listening to the likes of industrial artists – Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Front 242, Front Line Assembly, Pailhead, Revolting Cocks, and many more, featured on Wax Trax! Records. Looks like things have come full circle.

Released just days ago, 26 October, Gatekeeper’s 12″ EP entitled “Optimus Maximus”, consists of four new tracks, to be released digitally 31 October. Read the Fact interview with Gatekeeper and check out their ghoulish video for “Optimus Maximus”, directed by Arawa Fm‘s Tommy Boy. After all the Gatekeeper fervor has ended, you’ll want to spend a few hours entranced by your favorite horror films.

Glad to see HRO opening new “blog horizon’s”, via opportunities to see what stories are “internet researched”, for potential, insightful, new “meme’s”.
If that’s not enough “runoff” for you, Carles is hosting a partie with us in Chicago.
Not sure to mark this occasion with a game of “Where in the Congress is Carles?”
or a massive game of Hipster Bingo?
Please leave your vote in “comments” and if someone answers with, “first”, i’ll be so excited, i’ll give you 4 tix’s to hang out with us at the “partie“.

The Twitter for Hipster Runoff currently says, “i think my blog is ‘having a party’ in Chicago, or something.” And it’s true: though Carles is usually almost impenetrably ironic on his strangely popular blog, he’s being straight up with us here.

The second edition of Branded–the ravey new party series that kicked off with a Deadmau5/Crookers/Late of the Pier show in April–is happening at the Congress Theater on June 19, and not only is Hipster Runoff’s name on the bill, the press release makes a point of noting that Carles will be in the building. READ MORE . . .

I thought the highlight of my life would be appearing on both the Cobrasnake and Last Night’s Party

But really it was becoming bros with Carles

And getting dibs on his leftover tugjobs

PS – Worried that no song is attached, and this post won’t get picked up by Hype Machine, also hope some “GRINDERS” come to the party.

Black Strobe & Arnaud Rebotini US Dates

What connects Norwegian death metal, French club anthems and London super-producer Paul Epworth? It sounds like a particularly intractable example of the six degrees of separation game. However, these seemingly irreconcilable points on the musical compass are linked by French dance rock four-piece Black Strobe. A simple enough answer. The explanation is going to take a little bit longer.

Not as long as it took the band – Arnaud Rebotini (vocals and programming), David ‘Siskid’ Shaw (guitars and keyboards), Bastien Burger (bass and keyboards) and Benjamin Beaulieu (drums) – to record their debut album, however. Burn Your Own Church is a record ten years in the making. Happily, it’s worth the wait. Few bands manage to combine guitars and electronics as successfully as Black Strobe.
