Two Bands from Different Sides of Town Go Head to Head…

…is a great sub-header for a flyer!

Kind Monitor at the Zipper Theater

But seriously, I saw Kind Monitor co-headline a sold out show with Amura/Misha at Monkeytown last month. Although we were all encased by four large projection screens, I was too engaged by the earnestness of their songs and dynamic stage presence to look at anything else but the band.

They’ll be sucking me in once again this Friday, May 2nd, at yet another unique venue, The Zipper Factory. Also on the lineup is hip hop duo louis logic & J.J. Brown, with burlesque diva Lady Rizo playing hostess and mistress of ceremonies for the evening. Though the performers come from disparate backgrounds, I’ve been told the night’s offerings will include some collaborations among everyone on the lineup–and possibly from some special guests and collaborators. They won’t disclose who, but I hear John Cameron Mitchell and Moby might be hanging out in the audience.

You can purchase tickets in advance at www.thezipperfactory.com and by phone at 212.352.3101 for $12, or in person at the show for $15.

…and you can also snag this track:

Weekend Update

tomb crew

I had the craziest weekend that definitely prepared me for the spring (then summer please hurry). I got a great share of BBQ food, good friends, and some new and inspiring music. On Friday night Trouble and Bass was absolutely wild. I am a big Rusko fan so I was super content with his dubstep set, it was exactly what I needed. But little did I know that the DJ Crew following him would unexpectedly tear the roof off the place. Tomb Crew is killing it. I want you to stop reading this for a second, go to their myspace page, check out their tour dates, download the mixes on their page and get back to me……I’ll wait. Ok, now that that is done we will move on.

Saturday night I wound up at a BBQ that turned into a complete drunken dance party, which brought me to bar hopping somehow. I stopped by Hugs in Brooklyn to check out my favorite blog/mix partner in crime Woodman Djing along with Egg Foo Young AKA Michna. Michna is the newest addition to Ghostly International and it couldn’t be more perfect for him. His song titled Triple Chrome Dipped is on the new Ghostly Swim compilation. I love Ghostly, and I love Adult swim, so of course I am all about this. There is even a video for his song!!!! You can download Ghostly Swim for a short time here so get on it people.

Somewhere during this weekend there was a secret sneaky peak at a new and wonderful discotastic band that has a name involving the son of Zeus and a single with a title meaning not being able to see. I may or may not have been there. Hmmmmm. “I heard” it was amazing. Big things for them soon. You’ll see.

I completed my weekend with cuban food and a sneak preview of Iron Man and now I am ready to sleep for a few days. XOXO

Felix Cartal Trains with Mr. Miyagi

FEEEEELIX CARTAL!!!

Our favorite Felix Cartal is back (has been back but delayed on getting this up) again cranking out yet another blistering remix of an equally blistering tune from Nordic sensations, Mr. Miyagi. The original is a chunky, driving banger which bears a striking resemblance to some of Boys Noize’s best. Upon hearing the original some time ago, I wonder how one could improve upon it, but Felix took it to the next level of rawness adding a more driving drumline and sliding, distorted leads. This one is a necessity in any of your traditional distorted electro sets.

And for all of our Chicago readers, be sure to check out the free Scion show this Wednesday the 23rd at my favorite club, Smartbar featuring the likes of Felix Cartal, LA Riots and The Bloody Beetroots. Be sure to RSVP here and get there early. If you can’t get enough of Felix he’ll be back in Chicago again in less than a month to play the venerable Dark Wave Disco.

Better Be (French) Boobs!

BetterBe(French)Boobs!

There will be some serious and I mean serious, jukin’, bassline, grime and french electro, popping off at “Better be (French) Boobs”, at Scala, Berlin on the 19th of April (Saturday). With RAZIEK, MOULINEX, MIT, ABSURD, BAGGS, MARVY DA PIMP, SPYZ, YEAH FOOL! and WAST IT GRRLZ, this party is set to throw your head for a spin!! Those looking for some HYPE, this one’s for you!!!! I’m pretty sure you would find several of the Trash crew in attendance, if we weren’t such a far stretch from Germany!!

To give you an idea of what some of this ghetto extravaganza will sound like, have a listen to the latest remix of the Mr Biggs track “Busted” by GTO. “The Ghetto Technicians Officiales”, as they’re called, are Raziek and MC Cerebral Vortex. If these two don’t leave your legs feeling like complete jello after shakin’ your ass, then maybe you’re just a bit too stiff. Absurd brings in some nice ragga bassline edits with “Gangsta 4 Life”. Check out Raziek’s remix of Top Billin’s, “Make Me Cream”, (on his My Space, to be released soon) which is ghetto tech, dirtiness!!!!!!

The entire video “I Want Nothing“, directed by Fantasista Utamaro of mashcomix, for The Black Ghosts is one big highlight and amongst the coolest videos I’ve seen in a long time!! Get Low!

NYC and Brooklyn both get repetitive after a while. I feel like I find myself at the same 3 places every weekend. I try to limit my visits to Studio B and 205 Chrystie but it is almost impossible. I love both places but after I am there 3x a week for an entire month I get kind of annoyed and over it. Can we find a new venue please? Anyone? Bueller?

I highly suggest making your way to SuperNature 2 at The Silent Barn on Saturday if you are in the area. I went to the first one and it was crazy. It is a little out of the way but I promise it is worth it. Scottie B played the first one and “the kids” were going absolutely nuts to MIA anthems, baltimore club bangers and the crunkest hip hop out there. I felt old and boring when I saw that there was some serious vogue action in the front and breakdancing in the back. The energy was like nothing I have seen. I just asked my roommate how to describe this party and her exact words were “people going crazy and having fun like you used to because you didn’t care what was going on around you”. If there is one thing I love it is definitely a sketchy loft party and Supernature definitely fits that description.

Dre Skull and Todd P are responsible for this party and they get a super high five from me. Last time I was there I really enjoyed Dre’s closing set, it was my first time seeing him DJ and I am now a fan. This week they have Chicago’s own Dj Nehpets, who will be playing a 2 hour set of Juke, Rap, R&B and House. You can RSVP here after you download this remix he did of Get Low, the song I will never ever be sick of.

Bang!Bang!

Bang Bang presents Duke Dumont April 19th at Rooty's Birmingham

The Bang!Bang! sound is something you may be familiar with if you were a regular attendee to such Birmingham based nights as Panic at the Sanctuary and Chick Dig Jerks Party’s, Bang!Bang! have provided many a soundtrack to my nights out in the past..and yes they have been messy!

If like me you have missed their formidable dj sets alot you will be pleased to know that from now on there will be alot more ‘banging’ going on in Birmingham, UK which therefore equals alot more dancing (hurrah) and debauched evenings no doubt….hell yeah!

On April 19th Bang!Bang! will be hosting a monster of a party at Rooty’s located in Digbeth Birmingham. This party will be more monster than that shitty monster in Cloverfield, the boogie man or even Godzilla! Seriously with a bad ass set from Duke Dumont who will be surely cranking up the ghetto house vibe, and Trash favourite Lillica Libertine this party will make you shit your pants or even cause your eye balls to pop out as it will be that scarily good!

If that ain’t enough to convince you (jeez who are you kiddin’) there will be sets from Pete Death, STDJ’s, Opticks and obviously the Bang!Bang! boys themselves.

If you miss this party I may even slap you myself. Now go - get your tickets and prepare physically & mentally for what will be one of the party’s of the year.

The party starts at 10pm and tickets are a mere £10 (in advance) - for more information click here.
