Usher feat. Nicki Minaj – Little Freak

nicki beats up usher, everytime.

nicki beats up usher, everytime.

Rather than, achem, usher in the New Year reminding Trash readers of our ability to dig for the best in underground dance music, I’d like to start a new Trash trend: writing about all the music I like to listen to. Too often is the blog community busy positioning themselves with a separatist take on Important music. And to be fair, we are no different, but I’ll be the first to exclaim my entrenched loved for Pop. So let 2010 be Trash Menagerie’s year for living up to our name as we work to display all the “animals” of the music industry, and leave the exoticism up to you.

First up, R&B. I grew up with 90′s R&B like it was Simon & Garfunkel except it was wrapped in 808s and claps. Happily 2009 saw the the re-claiming of an often tired genre with the prolific presence of The-Dream, Love Vs. Money perhaps getting even more replay from me than Bitte Orca. And hope stays alive with Usher’s Polow Da Don-produced new single “Little Freak,” a triumphant declaration of return paired with the fresh new talent of Nicki Minaj (if you haven’t heard the Chase & Status produced “Saxon” I suggest you get on that before you start hating bro-step).

Listen for: Steve Wonder sampling, the potential for a Dubstep-y intro, silly lyrics from Usher, and even zanier bars from Minaj.

  1. To be fair though, the reason most bloggers blog underground/hard to find music is because if people wanted pop music they’d just watch MTV.

  2. I think you’re missing the point. MTV has zero editorial prowess, not to mention very little music, and the music they do have is heavily determined by the muscle of major labels. That kind of content results in sterile commentary, watered down presentation, and an inauthentic media experience. Plus, we’re free.

Here at Trash, we get to highlight quality Pop songs, put them alongside little-known artists, hopefully speak intelligently about them, and hopefully that results in a more nuanced and accurate view of the music industry. But maybe you’ve yet to embrace Pop in all its brilliance and talent, and to be fair, that’s okay too.
