Miles Maeda Returns!
Woah did I just have a major flashback to 1992!! A few weeks back, a friend sent over a new mix by an old Chicago Dj/producer and asked if I’d like to post it on Trash Menagerie. He said the mix was by Miles Maeda. “Miles Maeda, whattttt?!” I thought to myself in disbelief. I hadn’t heard this name in forever. If you lived in the city of Chicago when the house and rave scene was booming in 92, more than likely you were familiar with Miles Maeda. His name was plastered on pretty much every party flyer with the likes of Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, Diz, Sneak, Cajmere, and Dj Heather, to name but a few. Miles was instrumental in building the scene and the music that came out of Chicago during these years.
Last night I stumbled across a site called, Rave Archive, which hosts old mixtapes from the early 90′s. One of my absolute favorite mixtapes from this time, was Miles Maeda’s ‘Bliss‘, from 1992. I probably listened to it a few hundred times during 92-94 and never tired of it. It was one of those perfect chill-out tapes that you played the day after raving 10+ hours! It has been years since I last heard the songs, but upon listening, it all came back to me as if I had just listened yesterday.
Miles stepped away from the Chicago scene for some time, moving to the West Coast where he pursued other ambitions, including teaching as a certified yoga instructor, which he continues to do. Miles is currently working on his first full-length and his own record label, Bopsa. He’s back in Chicago, opening up for Glass Candy, as DJ Total M at Darkroom, tonight!! Catch him behind the decks, teaching yoga around the globe and back in Chicago, 4th July at his Smartbar residency! Enjoy Miles’ latest mix, ‘Beatific Beats‘ – smooth summertime beats!! (special one for my Swiss friends – PD Williams and Stefan. Thanks Paulito!)
For the Chicago peeps that remember the impact Bliss had when it came out!!
