Lorn

Dude's Myspace Is Elite
The next time you’re talking to one of your favorite DJs, make sure to ask them who they’re listening to. Often we take mixtapes at face value, assuming everything present must be a DJ’s central focus. Lurking beneath and behind a DJ’s tracklist though is a collection of artists and genres that may make evolutionary sense, but a DJs arsenal truly comes from the less obvious; and those who cite a more nuanced roster of influences are the ones best for ear-stretching.
Courtesy of recent Trash Menagerie guest Passions, aka Math Head, I’m here to present the Trash community with an artist named Lorn. Posted up in Brooklyn via the Midwest, Lorn is a confounding musician of sorts. There seems to be a clear foundation in the demonic blips of Aphex Twin as well as the thickness of Dubstep, and even the smooth 808-centric beats and claps of Southern Rap and 90’s Hip-Hop. The track offered below is a tune called Juggernaut, and its ferocity far outmatches any suppleness, but evident still is the intimacy of the sonics and the subtle warmth of the synthesizers. Obliterating any feeling of sanity though are the drums, which in their flurry of high-hats and drum rolls makes this song really chug. As a special addition you will find another Lorn production with guests Mobb Deep (yeah fucking right), but you’re welcome to think so.
Coming soon from Lorn will be his work in progress “Nothing Else,” out sometime this year. Until then you can grab Lorn’s 12″ “Grief Machine” on Amazon and iTunes. Check for local Lorn listings in the coming year, this one is about to be household. If you have doubts, check out XLR8R’s “I Hear(t) NY” podcast from June of this Summer.
