Bok Bok Vice Mix

If I had frequent flyer miles to any European city, I wouldn’t chose an ugly, dark, rain-stricken city like London. Recently, Dubstep has morphed that sentiment somewhat, but I’d still prefer Dublin where it’s green and the Dubstep is still deep. Now, in the last 3 weeks, Bok Bok and his Nightslugs party with L-Vis 1990 has truly distorted that statement, making me want to take out high-interest loans despite the economy, just so I can see Kode 9 wreck an optimistic Nightslugs crowd on January 30th. Until then though, I’ll just revisit the Nightslugs mix for Fact Magazine in December, and now this dynamic set curated by Vice Magazine and done live by Bok Bok himself.

The mix spans Bok Bok’s interest in UK Funky, previews upcoming Curses! material, and if that wasn’t enough he puts some of his own work on display as well. Coming in at a digestible 30 minutes, this mix is not only a rarity in its live format, but puts a spotlight on new faces in bass music, with one of these being Bok Bok himself. If he and L-Vis weren’t fit to take over my 2009 life, I might have to move to Budapest, where at least girls come out to Dubstep shows.

REVOLUTION NUMBER 9 – NEW YEARS EVE, Chicago – Congress Theater from INDUSTREATE on Vimeo.
Revolution Recap by Noah Banks

Oh what a night. It was fun. It was crazy, it was a rainbow of fruit flavored emotions. Watch the video, you’ll get a sense. I actually giggle when I hear Xavier D’Rosnay from Justice say “Stones Throw” on camera.

Fare Soldi Are Survivors

Fare Soldi are from Italy and they are among the few that have survived the storm that Crookers, Bloody Beetroots and the likes have unleashed. Fare Soldi bravely still hold the flag of italo disco high.

Their label Riotmaker Records recently gave away Fare Soldi’s new single Survivor along with two remixes of the track by Saint Pauli and Keenhouse. It’s a cover of  Mike Francis’ classic tune.

Mike Francis – Survivor (on YouTube)

We are a bit late on this, but the track is great and so are the remixes.

Subscape Remix – The Qemists

Clean Face, Dirty Music.

Clean Face, Dirty Music.

Few remixes succeed on as many levels as Subscape‘s remix of The Qemists “Dem Na Like me.” Beginning with chopped and glossed samples of the original song’s intro, the guitar riffs’ optimism is perfectly shattered by frightening bass convulsions and the reemergence of guitar. Certainly lacking from the Dubstep community is the presence of guitar, but brilliantly placed at the beginning, the guitar serves as a lighter, more accessible Rock throwback, providing a dose of nostalgia before a melody that delivers blunt and unforgiving low-end.

Released recently on Ninja Tune, Subscape share remix credits with King Cannibal on the Dubstep tip, along with A1 Bassline and Elektrons on the Electro side. Find the Subscape remix in Tall Quality below, and the others lurking in other corners of the internet. If you’re interested in more Qemists material, that can be found at your local iTunes outpost or friendly neighborhood Beatport.
