Oh What a Difference a Chord Makes – Justice Responds to “Unplugged” Allegations

Justice Unplugged

Earlier today, Tech Funk Manifesto posted a photo of Justice “unplugged”, which lead to a whirlwind of linkage & emails circulating like wildfire across the internet.

The allegations and rumors . . . BUSTED!!!  . . . Justice doesn’t play live?!?!?

So it seems to come down to a simple case of, ooops, my cord came unplugged, shit happens.

Justice responds to the allegations, with an “official statement” and explanation of the mishap . . .

“Yeah, shit happens! I remember the story, I couldn’t remember the city but i think it was in Manchester. I didn’t noticed at first, because as you can see i was looking at the computer to launch the next vocal hook and right after i realised that the blue screen went black, so there was no way possible it could work, so i plugged it back in, big deal! and the next thing you know is this picture.” – Gaspard Augé -  Justice

  1. the thing is that once your controller’s USB cable comes unplugged while your program is running, you can’t just plug it back up and start using it again, as it won’t be recognized by the program anymore.

you’re forced to close the program, plug in the USB cable, and restart the program again.

trust me, this has happened to me many times, so i know.

not accusing or instigating, but there has to be a better explanation or maybe i need to know more about how their live rig is set up.

  3. what “program” are we talking about here?

unplugging/plugging in a usb controller mid set works fine in ableton.

  4. It works in Reason too.

  5. In fact I think it will have moreto do with your USB drivers (which are more often than not part of your motherboard chipset not your OS install) or your drivers or your controller itself because I know on an older machine I did have the problem where if you unplugged a controller you had to restart Reason.

  6. I unplug cables all the time using both Reason and Ableton. I do think it’s curious that you wouldn’t notice seeing as the screen wouldn’t be lit, and unless it was the first song you would have been fucked from the start as the cords don’t just pop out. But I also think that a group like Justice has too much on the line to just do a Mili Vanilli. I’d wanna kick the tech’s ass, if it isn’t their fault, because now it’s going to be fucking Justicegate 2008 over one USB cord…

  8. the funny thing is if you go on youtube and watch videos of justice live, these not one(at least not one ive seen that gaspard plays, only the other guy. i always just assumed he was in on the producing aspect but no the djing aspect, alot of groups are that way.

  10. wodiestylez : it’s true that Gaspard, for some reason, does not get much involved during the band’s DJ SETS. but during LIVE SETS, which are WAY more complex shows, he’s as involved (maybe even more) as Xavier is. if you still have doubts, just watch A CROSS THE UNIVERSE, there’s a moment in it where Xavier leaves his machines to go and act funny in front of the audience, and Gaspard is running the whole sound system all by himself during that moment.

I’m tired of people who argue that Gaspard is the band’s useless guy ; he’s a great musician ! my opinion is that he just doesn’t feel quite at ease at playing others’ music, which would explain why Xavier is the one running the show during DJ SETS.

and about this picture : this buzz is just about some people who are bloody jealous of Justice’s success, and take advantage of a technical issue which is fucking common (people who play the electric guitar know what I’m talking about) to criticize this great band. a shame.

  11. i wasnt dogging on them or anything, cause im a huge justice fan. i was just saying that i assumed he wasnt in on djing gigs. plus the fact that ive seen alot of big names who pre-beat match cd’s and basically just press play on a cdj or do an all out ableton set (not in a live pa manner) give those of us who actually dj old school style, a bad name. programs like ableton live are a great advancement in music production and live sets, but there are too many big names useing it in the wrong way. basically cheating in my book, there are also alot of GREAT producers that when behind the decks are a disasterous train wreck. soooo all i was saying is that now a’days i wouldnt be surprised to see anyone cheating regardless of their level of fame or success.
