Bass Welterweight Kanji Kinetic

Kanji Kinetic's EP "Shock Tactics"
Coming through the bass-pipeline this week is Trouble & Bass’s new soldier Mikix The Cat. His EP entitled “Freeze“, will drop September 16th via Trouble & Bass Recordings. Adding to this exciting release from UK’s recent T&B hire, are remixes from Bass heavyweights Drop The Lime, Starkey, and most interestingly Kanji Kinetic whose remix has already been released to the blog world as promotional material.
The Mikix The Cat single “Freeze,” is a Rave sprinkled Electro tune that’s Bass Heaviness contorts it into a headier piece of progressive dance music. This reflects greatly upon what Trouble & Bass has come to represent, and the Kanji Kinetic reworking is a particularly noteworthy experience, as it highlights his extraordinary production skills and the heavily underrated EP from Rag & Bone entitled “Shock Tactics .” Rising out of the bass-heavy milieu of London’s Grime/Dubstep culture, Kanji is poised to make a ruckus, as his spot on production is top-notch and long lasting.
Utilizing the ominous sounds of Dubstep and pairing them with the more flighty drum patterns of Bassline and Rave, Kanji interrupts his tracks with quick blippy interludes, reminiscent of Hip-Hop producer’s interest in video game sampling. On the title track “Shock Tactics,” Kanji’s dynamism truly shines. Having created the major layers of the aforementioned cake, head throbbing bass is dolloped in unforgiving amounts. The end result is a quick-stepping, fidegty love affair with the moments in which Kanji’s bass bursts through the track.
As the Dubstep/Grime community forays into uncharted territory, 2009 should see a lot experimentation and enlightenment. Keep your eyes and ears to the East as New York and London continue to push these boundaries and trouble the waters of an increasingly sticky Bass community.
Via DJ Donna Summer’s excellent “Birthday Party Berlin,” here is quietly distributed a track from an up coming Kanji Kinetic release on Rag & Bone.
