Dskotek Emerges From the Rabble of LA

The LA electro/blog house/hipster music scene is a very strange place. I don’t think there’s anywhere in the world (that I’ve seen, at least) where the stereotypical bloghouse lifestyle has been more heavily adopted by youth culture. A vast number of our readers hail from LA, I’ve played for more kids on a tuesday there than when I play anywhere else on a weekend, and we get more “music” submissions from the absurd amount of young LA DJs who are the star of their tiny faction of the scene and feel that their MIA/Young Jeezy/Daft Punk mashup is going to rocket them to international stardom. Don’t get me wrong, LA is one of my favorite places on earth. Almost all of my favorite American producers/DJs/friends live and thrive there (Guns N Bombs, Acid Girls, Harvard Bass, LA Riots, Dirty Dave, Paparazzi etc.), the fans are the most fist-pumpingly excited fans I’ve encountered in this country and I’m out there pretty consistently soaking up the sun.
Imagine my surprise, though, when I receive an email from a young LA producer, Dskotek, and it contains two tracks that are not just passable as blog fodder, but are extremely original, well produced, clever and totally playable! I was so surprised, in fact, that I had to verify with a LA friend that this kid was real and it wasn’t some hoax. And sure enough he’s a staple at many of the club and warehouse parties scattered across SoCal. He keeps a local schedule that rivals many of the worlds biggest DJs (a feat only possible in LA).
As for the tunes, I’m providing you with two. The first is a remix of a tune by Mockin’ Bird (who doesn’t seem to exist anymore) called Hissi. The original’s a bouncy little electro-tech track and Dskotek maximalized it adding subtle trancey stabs, well placed edits and filters and looping the thing to death. In the end, it reminds me of something DJ Dan might do. The second is an original work called Sinfonia which proves that Dskotek knows what he’s doing in the studio. The layering and instrumentation is really complex and excellent and the whole tune a very dense, non-linear feel to it packing surprises at every turn. The quality of production is surprisingly good making this tune so much larger and more playable than the rest of the bloghouse rabble.
Be sure to keep an eye out for this kid and my guess is he’s hard to miss considering that if you walk into an LA warehouse on any given day you’re likely to see him DJing there.

to be quite honest with you, this la dj’s mixes are actually shit
i’m surprised you would post this to be honest. there’s some talent in los angeles and this guy is no where near it. in fact, he doesn’t even produce his own tracks.
word of mouth is the “tight tracks” on his top friends actually produce the tracks he claims as his. not collaboration at all.

Would love to get to LA some day to witness the enthusiasm myself. If you’re ever in Brighton, UK, you will find another welcoming young crowd of Electro lovers.
When is The Recommender going to get on your blog links fella? Where’s the love? Guess I gotta get your attention some other way…
Anyways, another good post and well written as always. Nice.

Hahaha I remember how Dskotek started playing at little small kinda lame parties last summer. and ive seen him grow into the talented artist that he is now. i mean when i go to warehouse parties im like ugh when is jesse going to play. i just saw him yesterday at Proper and he just astounds me even more. your point of view either postive or negative doesnt really matter, because i know Dskotek is going to be great one day. hahaha funny story, i met him at three in the morning at a Norms restaurant. he is very cultural and at parties and events he plays at he doesnt go backstage he starts networking and talking to people. jesse is a sweetheart <3
and thats that…

Comment by BLING VBL — September 6, 2008 @ 10:30 pm
story is confirmed, dskotek paid tight tracks $300 for each of the tracks after tight tracks produced them for him, so not only can dskotek not mix, but he cant give credit to someone when they make his tracks for him.
Comment by deepthroat — September 7, 2008 @ 1:46 pm
to deepthroat. your mistaken, dskotek and tight tracks have been collaberating . they have known each other for quite some time. and if you look closely at dskoteks myspace, read the section where it says band members… maybe you should think exactly what your going to say before even considering to speak about something make sure you have your facts straight.

Local Hero you obviously have bad taste in music!!!
Comment by DANSE — September 7, 2008 @ 8:41 pm
well to be honest, i don’t care whether dskotek loves or hates my comment. the comment is not intended towards him but rather toward a blog that i happen to enjoy reading that i have on my RSS feed reguarly that i’m deciding whether i should unsubscribe from.
i dislike it when i see some of my favorite blogs describing tracks as “extremely original, well produced, clever and totally playable! I was so surprised, in fact, that I had to verify with a LA friend that this kid was real and it wasn’t some hoax.”
obviously, this blog isn’t a reliable source to me anymore since i’m so positive that his tracks are a huge hoax. not to mention they are not well produced or original at all but rather poorly mixed edits/remixes.
what about upcoming producers like lazrtag and mr gaspar? they are the LA producers that deserve the blog love right now because they actually have talent.
Comment by kyle — September 7, 2008 @ 8:53 pm
i think youre going too far saying lazrtag has talent
Comment by deepthroat — September 8, 2008 @ 2:42 pm
i read some of these comments and i laughed so hard when someone referred big nasty!! not only does big nasty suck so bad at djing, his parties never happen, he hypes them up so much that you expect something big and when you get there its just a huge disappointment, i’ve witnessed them and to say that he has a remix is a joke. im laughing just writing about it.
Comment by johnny — September 8, 2008 @ 3:10 pm
lazrtag is talented
Comment by kyle — September 8, 2008 @ 3:27 pm
I’m currently looking into things. if there was a mistake, or information I was not made aware of, then that information will be edited in my post and credit will be given to appropriate parties. with the amount of music submissions we receive and not all coming from already recognized artists, we hope that the information sent is valid.

WOW this sounds like someone bought a access virus (synth) and played all the preset sounds . Not hating just giving my HONEST opinion . Revolutionary … No but I would spin it after a deadmaus tune or even a D.Ramierz .

No way in hell did this guy this guy ever get into a studio to make his own tracks. Everytime I would go to HypeLA he would always harras me to lend him a few dollars so he could buy tacos from the taco guy in the patio!!!
Comment by Norma — September 17, 2008 @ 11:08 pm
This guy does not hit the studio, just dj’s for young teenagers in ghetto LA parties/clubs…
tracks seem pretty shady and he has a kind of shady rep
