Here Come the B-B-B-BRICK BANDITS

Club music is a powerful force these days, while orginating in Baltimore, Maryland the sound has quickly spread around the globe. It could be the infectious repetion elements or the hip hop influence or that most tracks are in the proximity of 130 bpm or the sound is just fun and energetic. Or the fact it’s promoted and endorsed by heavyweights like Diplo, Sinden, Pharell Williams, and even Mos Def. Whatever it may be, the club music takeover has been a long time coming.

The Brick Bandits is a crew, better yet a family of producers and this family’s blood runs thick because these are some of the best club producers around. Its most likely that you have heard a production from someone in that crew and not even realized it. Some of the more well known members of the crew are Dj Tameil, Dj Sega, Diplo, Tim Dolla, Dirty South Joe and Dj B-Stee.

The best way to familarize yourself with the crew through is through the music itself.

First up is “Told Not Sold; the roots of Baltimore Club” a mix/podcast for Mad Decent records by Dirty South Joe. Which you can get through itunes here. You should also get the in depth article from here.

Also from Mad Decent is Dj Sega with “Introducing the Brick Bandits & Dj Sega“. Head here to download.

And also “Bamboo Banga” from Dj Tameil & Tim Dolla here.

If you’re in Chicago tonight (July 30th, 2008) a little early for Lollapalooza or just happen to be around, you’re in luck. Dirty South Joe and Dj Sega are going to be at Debonair Social Club with the fire department handy because they are also bringing some fellow Brick Bandits and Chicagoans, Rob Threezy and Charlie Glitch. And they are going to burn the club to the ground.

We have included Dj Sega’s rework of Steve Angello & Laidback Luke’s hit single “Be” and Rob Threezy’s smash hit “the chase” to entice you into attending.

Soul lovin’

Adele

Jumping from Invasion’s soul-psych-metal to the emotional depths of South London songstress Adele, soul is alive in many forms. Adele has the kind of power in her voice that can part oceans and leave listeners in awe, just like the American artist Etta James, she so greatly admires.

With her debut album ‘19‘, making a huge splash, there is no denying that Adele is headed for even bigger things in 2008 and has already planned to record her 2nd album in New York City. The immense “Hometown Glory” was heard just last week (7/18) when Santogold performed a cover of it on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge – Maida Vale show, with Jo Whiley. D&B producer High Contrast has worked his magic on “Hometown Glory“, keepin it true to his trademark form. Pick up the 12” with an instrumental version out on Hospital Records. Swedish house mafia producer Axwell highlights “Hometown Glory” with a dubby, proggy remix that is brilliant! And although a version from Brooklyn’s Pocketknife won’t see an official release, it is another fine rework of Adele’s ode to her hometown.

Adele’s 12” remix off XL Recordings, features two outstanding remixes of “Cold Shoulder” by Brixton’s very own Basement Jaxx, and a 4/4 dubstep baseline standout from Rusko. Other remixes of “Cold Shoulder” by Out of Office and a remix radio edit from Basement Jaxx are available for purchase on itunes.

I have literally listened to the variations of “Hometown Glory” hundreds of times and I could continue listening to Adele’s phenomenal voice over and over. Surely you will too, so we’ve got a few tracks for you to love on your ipod and some that will leave you dashing for the nearest record shop or digital download – Phonica, hmv, itunes. These are new releases so please support your artists and buy those that you love! Kicking it off is a live version of “Hometown Glory” performed by Adele. Read more about her in an interview at Blogcritics and pretty much everywhere on the world wide web!

chromeo - fancy footwork

If you’re skint like me, you like stuff that’s free right?

Well, for little more than the cost of denting you or your friend’s credibility, you can win a pair of tickets to see funk-tastic Chromeo LIVE at London’s The End/AKA on Thursday 21st August 2008.

We’ve got 2 pairs of tickets to give away.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO WIN A PAIR: email me with a video or link to a video of someone doing some ‘fancy footwork’ . It could be you or your mum or your second cousin’s second cousin – we don’t care, as long as it makes us laugh!

Hell, if you’re really hard up for an unsuspecting victim, you could even rip it off Youtube – but you’ve gotta be a bit clever.

Hang with me and the UK TM crew (plus the ubiquitous PR types) and check out other acts specially picked by the dapper dudes, plus drink free beer all night long, courtesy of San Miguel!! It’s part of their yearly summer music series, Hidden Depths. Email your vid to: writers@trashmenagerie.com, with FANCY FOOTWORK in the subject.

DEADLINE: Sunday 17th August 2008, midnight GMT.

I will email the two winners directly on Monday 18th August. In the meantime, to get you in the mood, download and check out these two Chromeo remixes of “Needy Girl” and “Tenderoni” from Lifelike and MSTRKRFT.

Evil Forest

Invasion-skull

It’s back to back Invasion!!!! Sink your teeth into the dark and “Evil Forest” as it comes alive in a quick spell binding minute and forty seven seconds!

Word on the street is Invasion may be hitting U.S. shores as early as next year. “We’re really psyched about reactions we’ve had to recent shows and about the album we just recorded” says Invasion guitarist Marek “Looks like the album is getting U.S. distribution so hopefully we can play some shows early next year.” By then we can expect legions of admirers to be following their wicked sound!! Check their Myspace for gig dates in and around London.

Invasion – Evil Forest

Here’s a bit more live action shot at the MacBeth, London. Also really loving “Three Gold Dragons” which is off their latest EP ‘Moongazer‘. Get it now!!!!

Invasion Brings the Wizardry

INVASION

Moongazer‘ is the limited debut EP by London three-piece Invasion, out on Run For Your Lives. Their sound is monstorous – A mix of 60s soul, 80s thrash and 90s stoner metal, which will turn you into true devotees and leave the rest trailing in their wake!!

Forget the bass, think: capes, wizardy, pendulums, mysticism, intergalactic shit and a sound that could be forged from Black Sabbath smoking a spliff with Metallica, taking turns making love to a young Tina Turner – Picture that and you’re pretty close to their mind bending sound. No doubt your head will be thrashing to the quick minute long songs belted out by lead soul power songstress Chan, atop Zel’s frenetic drums and Marek’s relentless guitar riffs.

Invasion prepare to take over with their forthcoming 12 track debut album, recorded at Toerag studios, produced by James Shaw of SMD fame. The LP is set to be unleashed this Autumn on This Is Music Ltd. Get your fill as the new fashion changes from the passé hipster look and takes a lean for wizard wear and wands.

FOOLS GOLD SUMMER

Record Label, Fools Gold is about to make this summer even hotter with a slew of new releases scheduled to come out in the next few months.

If you have been living in a cave or maybe some how stuck in time back in Soviet Russia, Fools Gold is the new indie record label started by Nick Catchdubs (who was just featured here on Trash) and A-trak. The label, so far is famous for bringing the world rapper Kid Sister and rapper Kid Cudi, who surprisingly are not related but both amazing. They have also introduced Canadian powerhouse producer/dj duo, Jokers of the Scene and Sammy Bananas a member of East Coast phenoms, Certified Bananas.

This is the kind of thing Fools Gold is about; introducing and breaking new talent to the scene and keeping things fresh. Not to mention the artwork is astounding because creating it is super designer, Dust La Rock.

They have recently released a Kid Sister remix ep with mixes by Simian Mobile Disco and JFK from MSTRKRFT. Head over to RCRDLBL to hear a preview.

Next up is the KAVINSKY picture disc vinyl “BLAZER”.

kavinsky

And it keeps getting better and better.

Atlanta’s Treasure Fingers is releasing his hit single “Cross the Dance Floor” with huge remixes by Laidback Luke, Curses! and lifelike.

Then Canada invades the scene with “Acid Bagg” ep by Jokers of the Scene. Almost everyone has been waiting to get there hands on a copy of “baggy bottom boys” and this will be the chance. Brodiniski and Destroy Disco will also be appearing on the ep remixing “acidrod”.

And speaking of Jokers of the Scene, they have just teamed up with NYC clothing company MISHKA for their new mix tape series “Keep Watch” – listen to the mix tape here – MISHKA explains, “Mix tapes have always been an integral part of NYC’s underground culture and burgeoning music scene, and as such, Mishka is proud to carry on the tradition with the launch of Keep Watch. Featuring top DJs hailing from every genre and geographic corner, Mishka’s Keep Watch party-mixes celebrates one of the most widely practiced American art forms. Released on a semi regular basis (usually to accompanying party), the mixes will be available for free download through our site, the Bloglin and very shortly podcast on Itunes.” The mix features a track from the “Acid Bagg” ep and one from labelmates, Nacho Lovers, ep.

other scheduled releases are:

Taliesin – Bass BinShit

TaliesinBassBinShit

In conjunction with an exciting series of releases from the Dutty Artz family including Jahdan Blakkamore’s “We Are Raiders” EP and Matt Shadetek/Cauto’s “Dutty Remix Zero,” comes the young talent of Taliesin. His mix “Bass BinShit” is a proper tour de force in bass heaviness and a precocious synthesis of Dubstep’s inspiration as well as its vision (view tracklist below).

If the tracklist isn’t convincing enough at first glance, a high-art nod from Mr. Sasha Frere-Jones of The New Yorker magazine confirms Taliesin’s place in a burgeoning community of DJ’s interested in closing the gap between large oceans and closely linked sounds.

Perhaps equally impressive though is his extra-curricular life at Bard College. Siphoned over from the reserves of a 50k-a-year liberal arts college, Taliesin is the creator of a Bard sponsored party called The Remedy, drawing such talent as Ghislain Poirier, Cousin Cole, Todosantos, and Reaganomics. In the Spring of this year Taliesin asked boss (Dutty Artz) and Fader Magazine darling Jace Clayton (DJ/Rupture) to come wax wonky at a music conference he created to stimulate conversation about the state of “the global sound.”

With shows opening for DJ Lord of Public Enemy and making a warmly welcomed appearance at Mexico City’s “Konami Sessions” for a top-spot at “Dubstep Massive”, the college-kid is positioning himself as an important figure in the U.S. search for a place in Bass. And his association with the Dutty Artz family is an association with clever depth. Resiliently original and unpretentious, the Dutty Artz vision is a steadfast and eclectic movement of people who are interested in bringing people the best in the unheard from every corner of the world. Taliesin marks yet another worthy ambassador in the transference of a unifying sound.
