Presenting Harvard Bass

HARVARD BASSSSSS!!!!

As Justice tours the universe and Kanye co-ops whatever he can get his hands on, the guitar electro sounds has begun its descent into the mainstream. Soon (if it hasnt already happened), you will see guitar electro acts beyond Justice entering top 40 playlists, on “Wow Thats What I Call Music” compilations and belted out through college bar karaoke sounds systems. It will be used to sell hemorrhoid creams and juice boxes and be heard blaring from high rise condo balconies and minivan windows. Such is the inevitable demise of the successful underground sound. From this inevitability arises a new inevitability; the question, “Whats next?” Major label A&R people, as I write this, are sitting at their desks in their shiny suits beading the blogs, digging through myspace and calling their younger, hipper friends trying to determine what and who will be the new big thing. At the same time, older, established artists are starting fresh with new sounds, new influences and new collaborations in an effort to stay current.

Anyone who has ever watched the birth of a genre before knows that it almost always grows from the youth; the fresh perspective. Well, I’d like to present a candidate for that new sound in the form of new-comer Harvard Bass. Clocking in at a measley 21 years of age, this San Diegoan seems to have stumbled, with his first original track, on a hell of jackin’ banger. If you have been through LA recently, you might recognize him as Sleazy V often seen amongst folk such as Paparazzi, Acid Girls, Johnny Love and so on. It’s interesting to me that someone that has come up in the blog house scene then comes back with straight up jackin’ house. I wonder if its a trend. I wonder if the pattern will persist and other young post bloghouse producers will follow suit. Regardless, this tune kills on the floor and I can’t wait to see what else ol’ Harvard Bass has got up his sleeve.

It’s That Beat!

Playdoe

If you weren’t already playing it loud, you’re definitely going to want to “pump up the volume”, on Playdoe’s latest, “It’s That Beat“, remixed by the Toxic Avenger!! This one will undeniably ignite the dance floor with it’s electro-pop speed and Spoek’s super cool flow!!

Sibot aka DJ Fuck and Spoek, are bringin the beat with their new EP, “Sibot & Spoek are PLAYDOE“, out on French label, Jarring Effects. Both South African artists have extensive musical backgrounds – Sibot, in big beat, turntablism, sound design and TV commercial music and Spoek, on collaborations with MC Max Normal, as well as rhyme extraordinaire, one half of the super hype, Sweat.X!! The two also share individual quality music time with, Markus Wormstorm, of The Real Estate Agents (Markus+Sibot project) and Sweat.X.

Toxic?? Well, there isn’t much to say about The Toxic Avenger that hasn’t already been said. He is unstoppable and always delivers! This remix will undoubtedly have you doing some full on head nodding!!

Burning Up for Ladyhawke

Ladyhawke

Amazing what an entire day and 1/2 of no server can do!! Sorry we disappeared for as long as we did, but we’ve had a rebirth so now it’s back to catching up with all that is swarming!

To celebrate all things Ladyhawke, we’ve got her latest track, “Paris is Burning“, remixed by Alex Gopher. Another gorgeous track to come from the lovely 80’s influenced, electro-pop New Zealander!

A music-obsessed child, Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke, was inspired by women of the 1980’s – Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Annie Lennox, Chrissie Amphlett et al. Prior to Ladyhawke, Pip played lead guitar in a rock band called, ‘Two Lane Blacktop’. She spent loads of time touring New Zealand and Australia, in the back of a clapped out van. They even made it to NYC and played CBGB’s. So it was only fitting that, “Back of the Van”, came about.

The first single, “Paris Is Burning“, will be released on Modular, 30th June, available on CD, 7″ and download, accompanied by remixes from Alex Gopher, Kid Gloves and Peaches. The forthcoming debut album follows close behind, due late summer. Ladyhawke is playing heaps of shows across the U.K. with her touring band and set to play two shows at Glastonbury! Catch her along the way!

Tidbit on Alex Gopher – Besides having once played in a band called, ‘Orange’, with the likes of Etienne de Crécy and both members of the band, Air, Alex Gopher was once asked to create three tracks for the designer Yves St. Laurent’s catwalk show!! tré cool.

Young Lust and LA

LASportsdaymegaphone

I first caught light of Londoner, Hugh Frost aka, Sportsday Megaphone, off his friend Nic Nell’s page as well as past features on Big Stereo and BiBaBiDi. His remix of Envelopes, “Party”, was a pleasant surprise. Who doesn’t like a good party?! This one was full of his trademark bleeps and blips!

His latest tune, “LA“, showcases his talent for creating a song heavy in lyrics, yet maintains a catchy, pop feel. Love the intro. “LA is about the inhuman philosophy toward people with mental illness advocated by the church of Scientology. It was written about the time I spent working in LA for American Apparel at their factory downtown”, says SM. Not your typical first thoughts whilst thinking of the city of sun and dazzle.

As for “Young Lust“, SM says, “It’s about not seeing someone for ages and meeting somewhere, (in this case a borrowed house) and making a mess and not caring – that kind of thing!” You don’t have to convince us, we’re cool with making a mess and forgetting our manners, especially if it’s due to lustful affairs…

Look out for the seven inch single “LA”/”Young Lust”, out 16th June, off Sunday Best, as well as Sportsday Megaphone’s debut LP, ‘So many Colours / So Little Time’, due out in August, loaded with a long list of remixes! For more Sportsday Megaphone, check his remix page, Sportsday Megamix.

Matt & Kim “No More Long Years” (Radioclit Remix)!

Matt & Kim at The Fix in Bergen, Norway

When the iheartcomix/Scion mixtape hit the streets, it was passed around like a fat, freshly rolled spliff. Everyone was smokin’ it and word on the street was that iheartcomix had the goods! With a plethora of sounds to be heard – TheDeathSet, Radioclit, Gameboy/Gamegirl, LA Riots, Flosstradamus, Designer Drugs, Miami Horror, Heartsrevolution, Lies In Disguise, Acid Girls and more, we pretty much felt at one with iheartcomix for delivering. Everyone shared and it was a beautiful thing.

iheartcomix is like the perfect dealer, they keep spreadin’ the love, feedin’ us the bombs, gettin’ us hooked. Just when we think they’re about to let up, they send over, Radioclit’s remix of Matt & Kim’s, “No More Long Years”. The smiley Matt & Kim and the ever so tropical Radioclit. What a combination of love!

For those in the E.U. Matt & Kim are finishing up their U.K. tour, so catch them at a pub/club near you and grab a copy of their record which is out in Europe on Telle Records!

Be Trash!

BeTrash

France just doesn’t let up. And if it’s up to the BE TRASH crew, they plan to keep you dancing into the wee hours, wrecking havoc with their energized parties!! There’s no slowing down in this environment – when one of them tires, there’s always another member or guest Dj to bring the speed! Proper electro with a slew of other genres and a bit of scratching is how they like to bang it out!

“Before all things, the BE TRASH collective consisting of Nouch, BootyBen and Mario K, is a group of friends that are extremely passionate about electronic music. With varied styles, we have a common goal: Energy!!

The BE TRASH parties were conceived in Bordeaux, France, in October 2004, in order to fill a gap in the party scene. We came together and assembled a talented pool of Dj’s, graphic and fashion designers, creating a different environment through sound and visuals.

The varying music styles consist of electro, electro-punk, tech-rock, ghetto-drum, happy hard-tech jungle, drum n’ bass, old school dance floor and pretty much anything that gets the floor rockin!! The visuals consist of animations, graffiti, vj’ing, dancers and performers. We are here to make you bounce to death!!!!” – Be Trash crew

Along with keeping the party poppin’, the individual Be Trash members have their hands in producing and remixing as well. Nouch and Booty Ben teamed up to remix NYC artist, Almamy, “Like You Do”, sometime last year, as well as our Swiss friends, Love Motel (feat. Detroit Grand Pubahs), on “Dial God USA”.

If you’re in or around Cognac, France, 29th August, Be Trash will be playing with Data, Teenage Bad Girl, Leonard de Leonard and many more at Cognac Electro Festival. Check their MySpace for details!

MGMT at Coachella

This video is extremely low quality, as it was taken off a mobile phone. Although I wasn’t at Coachella this year, it looks to have been a fantastic time. Brooklyn’s MGMT seem to sum it up with this lovely sing-along. Very much a plur moment right there. HA Catch them on tour now in the U.K. and other EU cities, then at Lollapalooza!
