Spitzer Hits the Disco!

Unofficial video for “Time to Let Go” by Sally Shapiro

Damien and Matthieu Spitzer sure do get around!! Fresh off their Australian tour, they’ve got a new remix and are gearing up for some more gig dates in France, Switzerland, China, Canada and the U.S. (Check the dates below). The Spitzer brothers were asked to remix, “Time to Let Go“, a song from Swedish disco pop sensation Sally Shapiro. “Time to Let Go”, will appear on Sally’s forthcoming remix album, “Remix Romance Vol 2″, to be released on the 17th of June. (An mp3 release only but with hi-res artwork) The second of two Sally Shapiro remix sets.

If you are in the mood to stare off into the midnight sky and dream of catching a shooting star passing by, then Sally Shapiro should be playing in the background. Heavily influenced by 80s italo disco, she makes me feel like I should be floating above the clouds with her ephemeral voice and moving lyrics by song-writer and production partner, Johan Agebjörn.

Currently there are 3 remix versions of “Time to Let Go” by Spitzer, CFCF and Lindstrøm. The Spitzer version of “Time To let Go”, is perfectly smooth with little vocals, adding in electro bits, creating a lovely beat and melody. Though they stray from the original, they still capture the essence of Sally Shapiro, breathing a new life into it. Stay tuned for new music by Spitzer, coming soon!!

Defeat!

ToxicAvengerMay

It has been a while since the last feature on The Toxic Avenger and the timing couldn’t be better as he has sent over his latest grinder of a track, “Defeat!“, as well as some exciting updates!! To say that the Toxic Avenger has been working, would be an understatement. He has been relentless at gigging in the U.S. and Europe and still finding time to create new music, remixes and prepare for his forthcoming EP and LP.

Having just finished off 2 new remixes, Ladytron’s “Ghost” and one for South African group Playdoe, (side project of Spoek of Sweat.X + Sibot), Toxic is set to release his EP, 26th of May on Boxon Records. The EP will contain 4 brand new songs. “Bad Girls Need Love Too“, with remixes of the track by Les petits pilous and Leonard de Leonard. The 4th song is titled ” __________”. (that is the name) For now, you can have a listen to all of them at Toxie’s Myspace.

With a cast of talent collaborating on the video for “Bad Girls Need Love Too”, it looks to be a visual masterpiece! Styled by esteemed Parisian fashion designer, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, (also known as JC/DC), who has dressed some of our favorites, including M.I.A. and Yelle, we can expect to see some colorful pop art inspired fashion!

The above image is a video-clip of The Toxic Avenger – “Bad Girls Need Love Too”, created by Mathieu Danet of the talented Born To Film team. The video was shot in Paris on 7th of April, and is due out at the beginning of May. The EP photo cover was created by Hélène Giansily and the cover design by Anem. The model in the video is a young French girl named Solweig.

Toxic is also working on his LP, which he is hoping to have out sometime in late 08′ off iheartcomix. If you happen to find yourself hanging out in Aix, South of France, the 28th of June, festivities will ensue with the likes of: MSTRKRFT, The Bloody Beetroots, Vicarious Bliss, Les petits pilous (LIVE), Toxic Avenger, Strip Steve, Uffie (LIVE), Paraone (LIVE) and ER2 (LIVE). Looks to be a swell time!

MeloManics Remixed - Out 24th April!

Melomaniacs
Remixed CD cover courtesy of Melomanics

The Dutch music scene, I’m told, is close-knit and verging on incestuous, which in a musical sense can only mean you’ve got a creative hotbed of activity that’s producing high-quality bands and music at an eye-blinking rate. This includes some of the bands I’ve been writing about, such as Blokgolf and Rogerseventytwo. Well, now it’s time to meet their second-cousins removed, electro-rock trio MeloManics.

MeloManics, which means “a sickening love of music” in Dutch, began four years ago in Amsterdam, bringing together Jeroen Joosten on keyboards, Guido Schuurman on guitars and Ben Olgers on drums. Following the successful release of their first album “The Grey Light” in early 2007, the trio scooped up an Essent Award and embarked on a long tour, wowing audiences at festivals such as Lowlands and venues such as Paradiso, Melkweg, 013 and De Effenaar.

Not content with early acclaim, the MeloManics invited artists and producers to remix tracks from “The Grey Light” for a new second album, “MeloManics – Remixed“. The uber-cool line up of producers involved include: Mr Miyagi, Junk Solo, Fantastadon, Sonic Me, RogerSeventyTwo, Dr Jones, Blokgolf, 3-1 and Black Label Record’s owner Kid Goesting.

“MeloManics - Remixed” comes out on 24th April 2008 and is released on the Black Label Records. I’ve had the opportunity to listen to all of the tracks and I’m VERY EXCITED!!

To get the celebrations under way in advance, the band hijacked the Poptrash Party on 17th April to have their unofficial CD release party in the well-respected Melkweg Amsterdam. Line up included: MeloManics (live + dj set), Kid Goesting (Black Label), Pat (Poptrash), Sickboy (Poptrash), and special guests.

We’ve got three remixes from the album for download, which should give you a small flavour of the variety of styles at play here: the industrial techno version from Junk Solo, the early 80s TV show influenced version from Blokgolf, and the simply electro version from Mr Miyagi.

Get your hands on this CD as the rest of the tracks are so different, yet all so good!! Available from iTunes or Beatport.

Felix Cartal Trains with Mr. Miyagi

FEEEEELIX CARTAL!!!

Our favorite Felix Cartal is back (has been back but delayed on getting this up) again cranking out yet another blistering remix of an equally blistering tune from Nordic sensations, Mr. Miyagi. The original is a chunky, driving banger which bears a striking resemblance to some of Boys Noize’s best. Upon hearing the original some time ago, I wonder how one could improve upon it, but Felix took it to the next level of rawness adding a more driving drumline and sliding, distorted leads. This one is a necessity in any of your traditional distorted electro sets.

And for all of our Chicago readers, be sure to check out the free Scion show this Wednesday the 23rd at my favorite club, Smartbar featuring the likes of Felix Cartal, LA Riots and The Bloody Beetroots. Be sure to RSVP here and get there early. If you can’t get enough of Felix he’ll be back in Chicago again in less than a month to play the venerable Dark Wave Disco.

The Frail Prepare for the Floor

TheFrail

Typically, you will find me listening to music that is a bit rough around the edges. Past, think Minor Threat, Descendents, Gorilla Biscuits. Present, The Death Set, Infants, Dead Kids. Music that is doused with a bit of hardcore and punk that has shaped a lot of the rowdier music I listen to. There is the less abrasive, sweet, endearing music that is melancholic, good-natured and has a wide appeal to many these days. If you are The Frail and you have producers such as The Toxic Avenger and DoBERMAN tweaking some of your tunes, you’re sure to get some proper distorted dancefloor appeal!

Emerging out of San Francisco a little over a year ago, indie electro-pop duo Daniel Lannon and Kevin Durr combined their efforts to create a charming sound and called themselves The Frail. A few short months later, they put out their first 4 track EP, “Count on This” and a month after, signed to local label, Tricycle Records. They just did a West coast tour and are hitting the East coast in June. They’ll be back in the studio in between time, to finish up their next 5-6 track EP, “Firefly”.

So what can we expect? “Firefly” will have some older reworked material as well as some brand new surprises in store! As The Frail continue to explore and grow, they’ve been experimenting with a few producers who are giving them a harder edge that is sure to end up on the dirty dancefloor. With a new remix by The Toxic Avenger and a few others being remixed by the likes of Buddy Akai, Dj Shh, DoBERMAN, (likin what he did with “Count on This”) LeRaided, After Midnight and perhaps one by Villains, The Frail are heading towards some new unchartered territory!

Check their My Space for updates, tour dates, other songs and remixes and if you’re in San Francisco, CA on 22nd of April, catch them at the Independent (ticket + rsvp info here) alongside The Teenagers!!

(both mp3’s are 160 kbs or lower)

Rochelle - Interview & Thieves Like Us Remix!

Rochelle Interview - Thieves Like Us Remix

Everyone knows I have a penchant for Rochelle, and obviously I am not the only one as they have just signed up to Fat Boy Slim’s label, Southern Fried Records to release the fabulous ‘Fer De Lance’!

So In keeping with this fabulous news, I caught up with them for a brief chat to find out about Southern Fried, their work with Chewy Chocolate Cookies and also some background on Yorkshire!

Oh p.s. there is also a lovely remix of ‘Drugs in my Body’ by Thieves Like Us remixed by Rochelle at the bottom of this lovely page…….and the band’s new video for ‘Fer De Lance’…ENJOY!

Kimbereleysmobiledisco: It says on your press release that you are the best things to come out of Yorkshire since Hovis, what other great Yorkshire based things float your boat at present?

Thom: Sharon’s Den on Cardigan Road in Leeds is really floating my boat whenever I’m in Leeds. They make the best bacon and egg baps in the whole world, which are an awesome hangover cure. The baps are literally the size of a human head.

KMD: I saw you play in Wakefield and your live set really rocked mind and the rest of the audiences socks. How would you say your live set has developed in the last year since then?

James: Since we started gigging 18 Months ago, we’ve been learning a lot more about our own sound and awareness onstage, and this allows us to be more confident when we perform, and ultimately more spontaneous.

Lydia: We’ve also become more experienced playing a wide variety of different sized venues, and types of shows including, more recently, all ages gigs. In those kind of situations you have to be completely prepared for the unexpected; the kids are a lot more honest and react to the music without any inhibitions!

KMD: When you were younger who were your favourite bands?

Thom: Foo Fighters; Nirvana; Jet Plane Landing… I was a rock kid to the core!

James: Silverchair, Metallica, Rage Against The Machine. Then I really got into dance music like Moby and Orbital.

Lydia: Madonna, All Saints, Kylie… and any boy bands……!

KMD: Did you originally have four members? just wondered really….?

James: Yep, it’s true we were once a four piece… But as De La Soul say ‘three is the magic number’!!

KMD: How did you get involved with Southern Fried Records?

Lydia: When we moved to London we played more industry attended gigs, and we met the guys from Southern Fried at Notting Hill Arts Club last year. We’ve built up a really good relationship with them, and their background in electronic music works really well for us.

KMD: How has it been so far working with them?

Thom: So far we have been working towards our first single ‘Fer De Lance’ with them. They have been really supportive and have opened up a lot of avenues for us which wouldn’t have been possible before. We have been able to work with some amazing re-mixers for the single, as well as working closely with a street artist called Adam Koukoudakis for the single’s artwork.

The thing we really loved about Southern Fried is the close relationships they have with their artists that you don’t get with a lot of the larger labels. Recently Nathan and Katy from the label came over to watch us rehearse, before coming back to our house and cooking us a meal! Anybody who wants to come around to my house and cook for me is brilliant in my eyes!

KMD: Did you have a few record labels to choose from?

James: Our management were originally talking to Parisian label Kitsuné, who we’d been dealing with on the remix for the Thieves Like Us track ‘Drugs In My Body’, but on meeting Southern Fried we decided it was better for us to have the first single out on a label that was closer to home. The great thing is Kitsunė are putting out the remix we did at the end of April too, so that should lead nicely into our own debut.

KMD: How was playing at Leeds festival?

Lydia: It was amazing! Being a performing artist at a festival you’ve been going to for a while feels pretty special. We hope to play Leeds again this year. That would be the cherry on the cake.

KMD: Do you have any festivals planned this year?

Lydia: We’re playing Rockness in Inverness alongside Fat Boy Slim, CSS, Digitalism, etc. And hope to be confirming a couple more soon….watch this space.

KMD: As a relatively new band you are inevitably going to get compared to other bands by reviewers and industry bods - what comparisons do you predict, or as a band do you love or loathe?

Thom: I think the obvious comparisons are going to the associated with other strong female fronted artists such as Blondie and Kylie. I think we would be happy with either of those comparisons as they have obviously both had incredibly successful careers and have held on to their spirit and integrity over a long period of time. I can also imagine comparisons being drawn up with more current bands such (more…)
