Music Makes Friends, Makes Major Moves

FiveEight.net

Universal, Sony BMG, EMI and around 9,000 independent labels licensed through The Orchard have signed deals with MusicMakesFriends.com (the online European music community). With the addition of these new deals, the service will now offer a catalogue of over 1.5M tracks and claims to hold 80% of all music marketed in Europe. The music-focused social network is currently available in nine European countries and offers a premium subscription service as well as its free ad-supported one. Securing content appears to be a major hurdle for new start-ups, but not the only one they have to clear. Qtrax, SpiralFrog and others are struggling to make ad-funding truly viable and questions are being raised over the longevity of subscription services; for example, a recent Forrester report suggests that only 7% of music consumers have tried a subscription service. With this in mind, will either of these models truly capture the publics’ interest, regardless of the amount of content on offer?
