I Don’t Care About Atomic Hooligan, But You Should

UK breakbeat bad boys Atomic Hooligan are at it again. Not only are they playing at the 7th Annual Breakspoll Awards on Thursday 28th February in London’s Fabric, but they’re on the verge of releasing their second album, “Sex Drugs and Blah Blah Blah”, an album that will undoubtedly give the breaks community a run for their money.
The album’s label, Botchit & Scarper, have kindly provided us with an exclusive promo mix which blows the trumpet for the boys’ upcoming single “I Don’t Care”, due for release in the next few weeks.
The boys’ mix, a cut and paste job, seems like they’ve just managed to throw in a little bit of every genre, for the hell of it, when actually, it’s all from “Sex Drugs and Blah Blah Blah”. Clever.
The mix starts with “Dirty”, a static-eaten track that will rape your ears if played full blast (do it!) and before you think they’re coming over heavy with the hip hop, wait for the chilled out breaks to quickly roll over like a thick morning fog in “Safeguard”. But don’t get lulled into some blissed out state of mind - the boys will quickly wake you up with the tongue-on-the-battery “Electro Aint Electro”, a tune and a half. Other highlights include the orgasmic-littered “Thief” and “Paper Cuts”.
However, the real winner of the mix is the electro/rock cross-over “I Don’t Care”. I see that being thrown down at indie and break nights alike. Hey, more ounce for your bounce ! Vocals for that track were supplied by London band The Furies Elmo Jones. Nice one.
In addition to the hoo-haa of the single, the 12” release features two great remixes of ‘I Don’t Care’: a breaks reconfiguration from Ctrl Z Vs Pyramid and a German technofication from Tomcraft.
I’ll be seeing Atomic Hooligan next Thursday at Breakspoll, and I can’t wait!
