Mystery Solved - Thomas Bangalter “Love” Track is a “Daft” Hoax

Yeah, that’s right, St. Valentine is giving us all “the finger”
Appears as if the mystery of “Love” has been solved folks. IT’S A HOAX.
Well, at least in regard to whether or not Daft Punk’s, Thomas Bangalter produced the track “Love”, that made the blog rounds like wildfire this week. The “TB” mystery track started showing via D/L links, reportedly from an address at daftalive.com on various blogs in the “comments” section on Feb. 14th, Valentine’s Day. If this prank was an overall statement about the meaning of love, well, that’s another post, for another time, on another blog ; )
So, to get to the bottom of this, today I shot off an email to get some clarification, and here’s the official word, straight from Daft’s management . . .
” Hi L - It’s of course not a new track from daft punk.
It sounds really cheap…” - p
Well, there you have it, I guess?
And love, in addition, to not being real, is apparently, also cheap! Ouch!!!
It was fun while it lasted. I was certainly hot on the heels to know what was up upon first getting word of it from Headphone Sex. Myself, like many, linked straight away . . .
Trash Menagerie - New Track from Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter?
Headphone Sex “My Beating Heart”
“Someone called ‘TB’ from daftalive.com seemingly left a comment this evening.
It appears to be a valentines gift to you.
It seems implausible that ‘TB’ would use this humble blog as a conduit to the world, but stranger things have happened! Robots move in mysterious ways.”

URB - Daft Punk valentines gift?
Is this really a track by Thomas Bangalter, one half of Daft Punk? Stranger things have happened.

Solid Goldberger - New Bangalter Track
If you followed the link from Brett in the comments of the last post, you came across what is being alleged as a new track by Thomas Bangalter, called “Love”. I’ve been scouring the web, but have come up with nothing more then speculation as to its authenticity, but either way its a solid track. Lemme know what you think.
EDIT: It appears that in addition to Headphone Sex, the track was also linked to on Palms Out. This seems fishy to me, but whatever.

Touche Explode - Daft Punk Valentine? Thomas Bangalter? Nobody knows…
There is speculation left and right from URB to Palms Out to Discobelle, that this is either a Daft Punk or Thomas Bangalter (one half of Daft Punk) track… What is known is the track is pretty dope and a ton of people want to know whats up…

I’ll stop there, you get the point : )

Hilarious, eh? It’s kinda like The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of the music blogosphere . . . So the question now remains, just WHO was behind this Daft prank? (And indeed, it is “daft” ; ) I certainly am intrigued, and having a good laugh over it all. I especially love how the viral power of the blog, proves itself, once again. Just how far, wide and fast, did this mystery merry prankster spread their web, and what, if any, was the intention? And will they come forward?!?!
Theories, anyone?!?!
I hear the Bee Gees are claiming responsibility : )

According to a comment in the headphone sex blog the track is by Louis Laroche and was credited to TB and mailed without his knowledge. Don’t hold it against him :/

I DIDN’T FALL FOR IT!
Neither did I fall for the fake Justice track a couple weeks ago, are bloggers gullible or just too eager to be the first onto something?

I still am very amused, its a great story, and it’s been fun following it.
As a blogger, what made this story plausible to me, was Headphone Sex’ initial report, stating they received a comment from TB@daftalive.com. As Daftalive.com is an official Daft Punk site, I figured, damn, must be true. And it sounds a lot like the early Roule releases Bangalter was putting out.
At the time, I didn’t really bother taking into account the process of leaving a comment on a blog. Basically, you can type in whatever you like you could be the Pope and enter your address as thepope@thevatican.com with a D/L link.
However, the more thought I put into it, it didn’t really add up, all things considered. If Daft was to orchestrate something along these lines using the web as their medium, they are going to “go big”. They are not going to leave trite little comments on random blogs, that’s way too easy. Daft Punk takes on challenges and they innovate. Musically speaking, as far as the production is concerned, yeah, it sounded like it could be Daft, but Daft from 10 years ago. Why the hell would Thomas back pedal?
Below is an excerpt from a post on http://www.Musicnews2u.com that just got sent to me that gives further explanation. (I have yet to peep Mr. Laroche’s myspace, this will be fun!)

the-biggest-record-in-the-world-until-it-got-outed-hoaxes/
“The producer of this “cheap” track turned out to be U.K. producer Louis La Roche, whose MySpace page now reads “I’m not Thomas Bangalter!” and who quickly took to the comments boxes himself to explain that he had no idea who was behind the totally not at all intentional leak/mix-up. (To be fair, this is not the first time a track has been mistakenly attributed to Bangalter at first. Eric Prydz’s delightfully crappy Steve Winwood-sampling “Call On Me” was widely credited to the filter king when it initially started floating around as any MP3 back in 2003.) If La Roche was the one behind the brief hoax, he should have worked the rumor mill a little longer. A Stereogum or Forkcast retraction would have put that MySpace “Profile Views” count through the roof.”

So, If Louis Laroche didn’t send this out, he must know who did. Was the track posted anywhere else before making its “debut” as the mysterious “TB Love track”? Because most producers, upon finishing a new track send it to a few select, trusted, individuals, before anyone else hears it. I find it very hard to believe that he does not know who sent it out. For one of his mates to be so bold and pull this prank without him knowing, highly unlikely.
Someone put thought and effort into this, and yeah, it’s brilliant for what it is, however, Pedro’s comment may have caused the whole thing to backfire.

From DIS: http://drownedinsound.com/articles/2946399
“It’s of course not a new track from daft punk,” read the response from Pedro Winter, AKA Ed Banger boss Busy P.
“It sounds really cheap…”.
Catty, though we’re sure the track’s real owner is none-too-bothered – ‘Louis La Roche’ is, apparently, the anonymous alter-ego of a well-known English producer.
Erol Alkan? Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard? Paul Epworth? What d’YOU reckon? Either way, a shit ton more people have now heard his track. You can too, at Louis La Roche’s MySpace.”

So, who’s gonna fess up?!?
I can’t find the link to this, but yesterday, when I was doing research on this I was reading comments at http://www.erolalkan.co.uk/forum/ that said “I spoke to Justice, and they have confirmed it was Daft!
Tee hee : )
Oh, and IP’s - anyone track those mysterious “TB” comments ; )
Off to see this Louis Laroche Myspace now . . .

The Louis Laroche myspace journal entries solve everything. He even interviewed himself.

A well-known English producer?
Night Facilities. He made the whole thing up himself, board posts and all.
Not exactly on the level of Erol or that guy from Hot Chip.

Nice, we got our own “TB” comment : )
Comment by Audio Pimpstress — February 20, 2008 @ 8:31 pm
its a dude called night facilities. a bit of a wanker really. he basically tried to leach off thomas bangalter’s success by using his name to promote his own mediocre track.
i guess it’s just a byproduct of the postmodern age. anyone can lay claim to any tracks and release them under any name.
first justice - hope, now TB - love, who’s next?
if anything its making an interesting statement about authorship/ownership of postmodern media.
