Thursday 28th February is the one day of the year that I hold clear in my diary. Wanna know why? It’s Breakspoll, the international breakbeat awards ceremony, celebrating the best and brightest of DJs, producers, record labels, shops, club nights, promoters and everyone who makes the breakbeat scene happen world-wide.

The awards will take place at London’s legendary club Fabric, starting at 9pm and finishing (finishing? yeah right!) at 6am, treating audiences to nine-hours of a killer lineup including live performances from Atomic Hooligan, Dub Pistols, Kraak & Smaak, Rennie Pilgrem, Deekline & Wizard, Quest & Odissi, and Slyde. Loads of great DJs from the UK, plus breaks from France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Spain. see below for full line up I am especially psyched to see some of my edgier favorites battling it out including Dopamine (vs Diverted), Screwface (vs ED209), and Hexadecimal (vs GrooveDiggerz).

The line up for the afterparty is also enviable, with a TM favourite Sam Hell on the rota, as well as Brighton “local boys” Ed Solo and Skool of Thought.

I saw Hexadecimal dj last year, when we had him down for Slackers Convention, and his set was awesome. He was last year’s Breakspoll Breakthrough DJ of the Year. Be interesting to see who smashes that one.

There are some new categories this year, including Best Small Club/Event and Best Live Act. The former category is great for supporting the smaller and/or newer promoters who try to keep the love alive in all pockets of the world; the latter category recognises that there’s more diversity to the genre than just DJ sets.

The awards started in February 2001 with an online voting competition, back when breaks was in its infancy. Break fans know that the rest is history. See you there !
