I’ve had the pleasure of coming across these remixes from Dutch DJ and production duo Blokgolf - and making the acquaintance of the charming Auke Riemersma (known simply as Aux), who took time from his waterside studio in Amsterdam to talk to me about their music, the close-knit electro/disco/rock music scene in the Lowlands, Slayer, and why square waves are in.

Blokgolf etched its way into the world when Aux, music producer/composer for media company MassiveMusic, hooked up with friend Houston, a producer/keyboardist for local Amsterdam electro-rock band MeloManics) after being asked to try their hand at a remix for the band.

Following the success at remix of MeloManics’s “WYSIWYL”, the boys went on a REMIX RAMPAGE, a la “Natural Born Killers”. Their prodigious stockpile includes remixes of Matik, Hasselhoff (not to be confused with our German friend, David), Comtron, and Ravage! Ravage! The guys have recently finished a remix for a special MeloManics’ “remix album” - nine arts plying their remix skills on the band’s tunes - which will be out this spring.

Their sound is a mixed bag, as they describe, “of electro, rock, house, acid, pop and punk” but the quality that I like is the humour. I burst out listening when I played “Holiday Rap”, a remix of the classic Dutch hip hop tune from MC Miker G and DJ Sven. Was this for real?

“The Mc Miker G thing was more of a joke really, since we didn’t get their approval on the remix in the first place. The B side of the original 12″ is vocal only, so I decided to make it into an italo-sounding thing. The other bands we did are on the same label as MeloManics (where my colleague Houston plays synths & samples) and others are friends of ours.”

On the Square Wave:

“We liked the square wave, since ‘Blokgolf’ is Dutch for ’square wave’ and we liked the ‘what-do-they-look-like-vibe’ especially on MySpace. Loads of remixers/producing duo’s use the glimmery-glittery-animated-gif pictures, so we decided to get back to the core: just a picture of a Blokgolf.”

Expect more from these two for sure.
