Cosmo’s Bang-out

Cosmo

You’re going to be having a love affair with the dirty dancefloor after, “Lets Go to War - Life We Live (Cosmo Remix)”, crosses your path. A tricked out remix done for Lets Go to War, by recent Brooklyn transplant, Cosmo, of The Junkies. They certainly love the bright lights, the glamour, the camera – who doesn’t?! They don’t give a fuck, nor do we! Read on for Cosmo’s ‘official Bio’, and grab his remix for your next bang-out session.

“Brooklyn resident Cosmo has been kickin’ it in electronic dance music and indie rock scenes since the early 90’s. He started out DJing around clubs in Miami and later became a member of the rock band “Muse”, (Lava/Atlantic records). He toured the U.S. and Canada with Beck, Luscious Jackson, Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr, Collective Soul, Live, Silverchair, and 311. In 1999, Cosmo left Muse to join Astralwerks recording artists, Metrodub (Miami, Florida).

Getting back to his Miami DJ roots, he toured with Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, and Fat Boy Slim, and was a resident at Liquid, Bar Room, Chili Pepper, and Level. From 1998 and on, he has produced a handful of dance records, some released internationally, on various labels such as Universal, Filtered, and Neo Records.

From this point in his career, Cosmo was able to work on his skills as a music producer and engineer. He was a producer for various indie rock bands and worked with Barry Gibb (Bee Gees) on several projects including the 2005 Barbara Streisand album.

Recently Cosmo moved to Brooklyn with his newly formed glam/electro group, The Junkies. Their EP will be released next month on Pistol records. Cosmo produces all the songs for the band, as well as songs and remixes individually.”

Music Distributors Goya and Resist Join Amato In Liquidation Woes

According to our UK sources, this week, Goya Music Distribution and Resist/React Music will be filing for liquidation. Along with Amato Distribution, this will make for third dance music distributor folding in the past three weeks.

Resist Music was the replacement company for React Music Limited, who, in 2004, was forced into voluntary administration, for owing, in excess of £1,000,000 in distributed income. React’s James Horrocks and Melissa Kemp set up Resist Music in its place, and acquired the staff, rights, and catalog of React.

React distributed hundreds of releases across multiple formats - vinyl, CD, DVD, ringtones, across multiple genres - house, electro, drum n bass, electro, trance, techno, hardcore, breaks, hip-hip, lounge, garage and more. They are are responsible for the “At The Controls” series mixed by DJ’s James Holden, M.A.N.D.Y., and Claude Von Stroke. They also distributed the popular Bugged Out! & Suck My Deck compilation series mixed by the likes of Erol Alkan, Miss Kittin, Felix Da Housecat, Jon Carter, Simian Mobile Disco, Damian Lazarus, Ivan Smagghe.

Goya Music was formed back in 1997 by Mike Slocombe and Spencer Weekes. They distribute mainly Broken Beat, Future Soul, and House music. The Goya catalog includes labels and releases from Dubsided, Eskimo Recordings, Oblong/Plank, Ubiquity,V2, BBE, and 300 plus other music outlets and artists.

Santogold – Rolling Stone’s Top 10 Artists to Watch

Santogold

We love Santi, you go girl!
Read the full story at Rollingstone.com Who on her first day as the only black kid in a Philadelphia private school, Santi White hid in a corner at recess. “I didn’t know what to do,” she recalls. But before long, the charismatic daughter of a lawyer had conquered the school’s social scene. “I was part of this clique, the Fearsome Fivesome,” says White, who now mixes electronic beats with punk guitars and New Wave synths under the name Santogold. “We were mean to everyone. The school called my parents, and my mom said, “I don’t give a fuck! She’s the only black girl — I’m glad she fits in”.

THE BIG LEAGUES Björk invited her on tour; Mark Ronson recruited her to co-write a song for Lily Allen; Spank Rock regularly pulls her onstage; and M.I.A.’s producers Diplo and Switch volunteered to work on her wildly eclectic debut. Santi has a wonderfully bizarre approach to melody and lyrics and has no care for conforming to mainstream guidelines,” says Ronson. “I envy that.”

Despite playing venues as large as Madison Square Garden when she opened for Björk, White is still getting comfortable onstage. “I’m not a ham,” she says. But she doesn’t want her audience to be limited to hipsters either. “I want a lot of people to hear my music,” she says. “Who doesn’t like a pop song?”

Check out the feature lovestar did with Santi back in May, “Santogold Delivers the Explosion“, for Trash Menagerie!

Exclusive Jaimie Fanatic Hotness

JAIMIE FANATIC!!!!!

OMGogglez!!!1! I was just sent this amazing Jaimie Fanatic re-edit of Mika’s Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) and I’ve been listening to it on perma-loop for like an hour now.

If you don’t know Jaimie’s previous work he’s been releasing house bangers out of his hometown of Rotterdam since ‘02 mostly on his own imprint, Groove Fanatics, but also on numerous other labels such as Tommie Sunshine’s xjR EU Records and Chicago electro house label Funktion Recordings. Lately he’s fallen into the edity, fidgity sounds and has allied himself with the likes of Mr. AvH and Crookers.

This tune is particularly edity, as he tore into the good time disco sound of the fast rising Mika. He really went all out with this reedit and it really blew me away how complicated the outcome is. I’m not one to play songs for much more than 3 minutes tops but I might have to let this one play out. This one will be out on Groove Fanatics in early December so be sure to go out and buy it.

The Lady Foursquare’s Boots

LADY FOURSQUARE!!!

The Lady Foursquare, a recent Chicago transplant originally from the Bluegrass State, has been doin’ thangs like a mad woman in the past couple of months. Her style merges loopy techno with electro, glitch and sometimes breakstep to create something that is incredibly unique and weird while remaining playable.

She’s given us a pair of bootlegs, the first of which is a little breakstep retake on some classic Public Enemy complete with a glitched out version of the original tune lodged in the middle. Interesting side story about this remix. When I first met her, we were in her studio and she played the tune for me and I was like, “This sounds like something that Trouble & Bass would do.” and She goes “Who’s Trouble & Bass?” So I played DTL’s remix of Curses! - This is The Way and she was shocked to hear that people were making stuff like that. So in essence she came upon breakstep completely on her own which I think is totally awesome.

The second tune for download is her incredibly interesting take on Art Of Noise’s Beatbox using the classic break and the not so known ending piano jam to create a huge breakdown builder. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the big boys started using this one at the peaks of their set because this one builds it up big time. And I can’t forget the classic Loletta Holloway vocal rant over it that really gets folks going. Be sure to check out her upcoming release on Angel Alanis’s ASquared Muzik called Xcite Bike and an upcoming collaboration between she and I, as well.

Fucked Up North? Sam Hell’s Monster New Release “Bone Snow” - Out Now on Sinister Recordings

UK breaks producer Sam Hell is, as they say, sitting pretty in pink.

The Northern breaks darling, recently snatched up by Sinister Recordings, has released yet another killer track on the label, his piece d’ resistance, “Bone Snow”, coupled with a remix from Aussie breaks badboy Dopamine. I first wrote about Sam Hell after meeting him at a secret festival, where I twisted his arm to make a mix for TM.

Several releases and remixes later (in a few short months), Sam Hell still never fails to deliver the goods.

“Bone Snow” is a stomping, unapologetically electro house, 4-to-the-floor, bass show-stealer. Dopamine’s remix licks the tune into shape, giving it a nice breakbeat polish. The track is currently number 5 on the breaks bestsellers 12″ chart over at Know How Records in Camden, while meanwhile it nicely graces DJ Download’s Top 20 downloads.

But what do the critics say?

“Yep, yep, pounding electric sounding ass-sling with a well cool groove”Lisa Lashes

“This is a killer!”Lee Coombs

“10 out of 10″The Crystal Method

Pretty sweet for a newcomer.

Down on the south coast (Brighton & London), Sam Hell’s tunes are winning hearts. Every breaks DJ bag and CD case I’ve rummaged through in the past few months has at least one of his tracks tucked inside. The Brighton breaks scene is getting a lot of mileage from the Groove Diggerz remix of “Stay Out All Night” and his remix of the Beat Monkeys’ “Lords of Eldorand”, which both sound refreshingly punchy, yet uncomplicated on a proper soundsystem. The word is out.

“Bone Snow” is Sam Hell’s best tune to date. He’ll have to work hard to top it, but I think probably knows that.

BONUS: I’m featuring Sam Hell’s interview with Ian aka DJ Daniella Downs from Sinister Recordings just for a giggle. It seemed Sam Hell wanted to cut through the booty talk and get to the music — while Ian just wanted to talk about the Spice Girls.

“Sam Hell: Unleashed!”– Sinister Recordings November newsletter:

Starting this issue, i’m going to pick the brain of someone related to Sinister every month. This issue, I have a nice chat with recent ass kicker Sam Hell. His last Sinister release, “Stay Out All Night” was a fine slab of techfunk greatness, and his latest, “Bone Snow” is making serious waves in both the breakbeat and electro communities. Be sure to pick up his current remix of the Beatmonkey’s “Lords of Eldorand” as well - it’s spanking clubs all over the world. So sit back, and enjoy the read.

Ian: I get this question all the time, so I love asking it - Where did you get Sam Hell from?

Sam Hell: From a New York hard rock band I used to listen to lots when I was about 13 or 14 called Helmet. It’s the name of the closing track on an album called “Betty”. It’s a crazy track with a banjo.

Ian: I hear you are going to be a featured artist on myspace? I have to ask - What do you think of Tila Tequila? Fit, or not really?

SH: Yeah, she looks like a very nice girl.

Ian: Speaking of myspace, I see that you like the color pink…

SH: Yeah, no one seems to be digging it though. I was going for the front cover of the Royal Tenenbaums

Ian: See, that’s clever. Even I didnt get it, but now that i do, it is a lot less feminine. Who is your favorite character from the movie?

SH: Eli Cash (Owen Wilson) - There’s a bit where he goes thru the window of the house and says “Where’s my shoe?” I have to keep rewinding a rewatching that bit. At least ten times. Classic!

Ian: That is indeed funny. I love ben stiller and his matching track jackets for him and the kids. And the fire escape plan drills - excellent! But let us move on…You seem to have exploded out onto the scene this year. To what do you owe your sound?

SH: I guess if we’re talking way back and coming forward I’d say Nine Inch Nails opened the doors from rock music to electronica and from there the Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers and the Crystal Method. And from there, Adam Freeland and the Plumps and breakbeat. They are the people I owe the most to I’d say.

Ian: How did you get hooked up with Sinister?

SH: Through the wonders of Myspace. I had only one track called “Trash” in my player but they liked the sound of it and wanted to hear more. I spent a few months working on new material (more…)
