I can remember being at a Electronic music festival in the mid 90’s and the National Guard, complete with a helicopter raided the camp grounds. How reminiscent!
The festival is the first time the force has used the technology
A remote control “spy helicopter” has been helping police patrol a major music festival.
Staffordshire Police have been using the CCTV drone for the first time at the V Festival site this weekend.
Officers said the remote controlled plane helped capture offenders at the festival site at Weston Park, on the border of Staffordshire and Shropshire.
By Sunday police had arrested 62 people in total at the festival and had cautioned more than 100.
Officers said 32 of those arrested had been found possessing drugs.
The remote control drone was being used particularly in the festival’s car park to catch criminals attempting to break into vehicles.
‘Caught on camera’
Police said they expected to use the technology at future big events.
Ch Insp Pete Owen said: “We are delighted to be trialling the drone.
“It will work in addition to the CCTV that we will monitor on site throughout the festival.
V Festival
The festival is expected to attract about 90,000 people
“Our message to criminals is that we will be watching you and you will be arrested if you are caught on camera.”
People travelling to the festival on Friday faced traffic delays of hours because of motorway congestion.
Highways Agency officials were forced to close a slip road on the M6 to help ease the traffic problems.
A New Jersey teenager has unlocked the iPhone, opening the way to Apple’s iconic mobile telephone being used by non-US networks.
The Associated Press news agency confirmed George Hotz, 17, had unlocked the iPhone and used it on T-Mobile, a rival to its sole US operator, AT&T.
The hacker says the unlocking takes about two hours and involves some soldering and skill with software.
AT&T and Apple have not yet commented on the news.
“Some of my friends think I wasted my summer but I think it was worth it” - George Hotz
Hackers and security researchers have been poring over Apple’s much-coveted phone since its launch in the US in June in an effort to discover vulnerabilities in the handset.
Top of their list has been cracking the code that ties the phone to AT&T, the iPhone’s exclusive network.
Before George Hotz’s announcement on his blog, the iPhone was made to work on overseas networks using another method, which involves copying information from the Sim (Subscriber Identity Module) card.
However, special equipment was needed and the actual phone was not unlocked, with each Sim card having to be reprogrammed for use on a particular iPhone.
Analysts believe Apple may still have time to modify the iPhone production line to make new phones invulnerable to the hacks before the iPhone’s expected European launch later this year.
Collaboration
The young hacker says he hopes phone-owners can eventually unlock their phones by themselves, and that he hopes his discovery will not be exploited for commercial gain.
Apple iPhone
The iPhone is currently sold only within the US
“That’s exactly, like, what I don’t want… people making money off this,” he told AP.
The next step, he said, would be a non-solder solution: a way to unlock the phone using software alone.
Technology blog Engadget said on Friday that it had successfully unlocked an iPhone using a different method that required no tinkering with the hardware. The software was supplied by an anonymous group of hackers that apparently plans to charge for it, AP reports.
The agency notes that both the Hotz and Sim techniques leave the iPhone’s many functions intact apart from its “visual voicemail” feature, which shows voice messages as if they are incoming e-mail.
The New Jersey hacker says he collaborated online with four other people, two of them in Russia, to develop the unlocking process.
He spent about 500 hours on the project since the launch on 29 June.
Welcome to the final countdown. I am leaving for college Saturday, and have been busy lately with getting everything ready. And once I am there, I really won’t have much time to work on the iPhone. But I don’t want to leave being the only person with an unlocked iPhone :) So we have decided to release the hardware unlock. The hardware required is decently simple, and most people who have modded a game system have the soldering ability required to do it. This has been a great adventure, the “summer of the iPhone”, and I finally achieved my goal of getting my phone working on T-Mobile. So its about time everyone else can do this too.
Here is the release plan. Last night, I went to the Apple store, and purchased a brand new 4GB iPhone. At 8AM EST sharp, I will begin unlocking a NIB iPhone step by step on the blog along with everyone who wants to come along. I’ll be answering any questions on #iphone.unlock @ undernet. I’ll be doing the hardware part first, so you can wait to see if you think the hardware is too complicated before diving in and taking apart the phone. But it really is only a wire that needs to be soldered. So see you all at 8 AM EST.
If you’re in Chicago tonight, check out Lava Lounge where you’ll find some pretty Cool Kids rockin the mic and the decks!! In the future, we will designate a section for all party flyers in some of the big cities, so stay tuned for some changes. x
Record label owner and deep house DJ, Magnus Asberg needs no introduction here in the UK. The 39-year-old Swedish native has been a solid part of the house and rave party scene in London and Brighton over the past 10 years, and before that in Sweden divided his time as a DJ, club owner, and professional skateboarder and snowboarder. But as I got talking to him, I learned that his love of music goes deeper than the party scene.
Magnus was first influenced by his father, a jazz musician, who introduced him to bands such as Pink Floyd (literally), as well as giving him his first record player. He recalls the first time he set his hands on vinyl and started DJing and laughs. “It was straight away! I was like six and I loved it.” He cut his teeth as a DJ at his parent’s many parties; at age 11, he broke in his first set of Technics 1200.
At 17, Magnus owned a nightclub in Sweden. Though his love at the time was hip-hop, he found he had to play the crowd-pleasing pop music of the time. It was at this time (1985) that Magnus discovered house music by accident: on the B-sides of hip-hop records. He found that the early house fit in well with the kind of pop music he was playing so he started mixing it in. As well as realising that he wanted to make house music, he deepened his knowledge of the genre by buying stacks of records on trips he made to the UK with his parents, which he said was more underground than the commercial house found in Sweden. He explains his segue from hip-hop to house: “Hip-hop I never really felt part of but house, I felt part of and I knew I was there to create it.”
Magnus made the permanent transition from Sweden to the UK in the mid 90’s, settling in the Riviera of the English south coast, Brighton. He joined forces with one of the South East’s most well-known and respected sound systems, Positive Sound System (“I was only meant to stay with them for a week!”) and continued DJing at clubs such as Fabric, Turnmills, Mass, and Berns (Sweden) to name a few plus festivals, skateboard and snowboarding competitions and parties throughout Europe (including helping to put on some of the early rave parties in France).
Magnus still DJs regularly in Brighton and London. In Brighton, you can catch his soulful to techy sets at On The House Records Late at Kabuki on Middle Street (from 3am) or the bi-monthly Positive Sounds nights at Audio. Magnus is also resident at 3am Nights at Funky Buddha Lounge and Lovestick nights. In London, he plays at Ram-a-Jojo every month at the Bedroom Bar alongside good friends Digs (DiY) and James Thomson (Juno Records).
These days, one of Magnus’s major preoccupations (not the only, mind you – he’s a busy man) is his recording collaboration with Jimmy Day (Mula/Stompa Music/Caged Baby), who is also currently part of Long Range, the new band from Phil Hartnoll (Orbital). The recording team go under the name C-Soul. Why the name? Well, “bits” didn’t gel so the duo went for something a bit more down-tempo (read: literal): “by the sea, seeing the soul, sea soul”. Something like that. Magnus and Jimmy have spent the past five years making music together, having first met earlier through friends in London in the tech house scene.
Magnus explained the process by which they worked, which sounds a bit like a nice game of tennis: first Magnus does fancy footwork on Logic with the ideas and vocals, then Jimmy comes in and destroys the court with his keyboard skills, followed by several more volleys across the net and culminating with a final arrangement. The C-Soul name has appeared on labels such as Flyagaric Trax, Is This, DiY Discs, and Suspect Package. More recent tracks feature on Magnus’s own label On The House Records (OTH), which has produced three EPs to date — “Feel It”, “Got To Be With You”, and “Watch This” – and include C-Soul’s remix handiwork.
Listen : From OTH 3 “Watch This” EP. It’s straight up-and-down house, with an edgier, tech-driven, finger-on-the-wire seam running through (but that’s just my opinion).
Watch This (Original) – C-Soul
