Shir Khan - Maximize!

Photo: BasenI heard Shir Khan’s BBC One Radio Mix about a year ago and was instantly hooked. Ironically, the same night I heard his mix, I also checked out my first Trouble & Bass party at Boogaloo where I met the ever so talented crew and homie, Luca Venezia aka Drop The Lime/Curses! (More on that later - hint, Institubes tour!)
Anyway, seems things are coming along nicely for Shir Khan and deservedly so!
Shir Khan is regarded as Berlin’s Premier DJ outfit in the discothèque and electro scene. He has been trashing dancefloors all over Europe. Shir Khan has played on the bill with the whole Ed Banger Party Crew, Yuksek, Simian Mobile Disco, Tomboy, Bonde do Role, Munk, Radioclit, Snax, Khan, Mocky, Erlend Oye and many other artists.
After two 12″s from Surkin and Adam Sky, SHIR KHAN - MAXIMIZE! will be the first Double Mix-Cd on Exploited.
SHIR KHAN – MAXIMIZE! is straddling the lines between Electro, Baile Funk, New Wave, Techno and Punk. It’s all the mess & mayhem of nightlife packaged into a double disc of never-ending strobing bliss. And it is also a collection of tracks from friends, Shir Khan has dj’d with in the past.
49 Tracks with Exclusives from Simian Mobile Disco, Sirius Mo, Adam Sky vs Mark Stewart (The Popgroup), Munk vs Mocky, Justice vs Spektrum, Sergej Auto vs Edu K, Captain Comatose, Free Blood, Sinden. Plus Remixes from Jesse Rose, Surkin, Switch, and Digitalism.
In The News
Recently included on the URB Next 100 List (2007), Shir Khan is making waves far outside Germany with his unconventional, uncompromising blend of dance-music style. Mainly spread through the Internet, Shir Khan has become a key tastemaker DJ and jack-of-all-trades. Right now, Shir Khan must be one of the busiest Djs in Berlin. Besides constantly dropping cutting edge Dj mixes for Fabric (members area), Ministry of Sound, BBC Radio 1, XFM, he has also started his own imprint Exploited, with artists such as Surkin, Adam Sky vs Mark Stewart, Sirius Mo, Chris de Luca vs Phon.o and is currently a remixer in demand for the ones of Brazilian Baile Funk-Trio Bonde do Role (Domino), New Yorks New Young Pony Club support Act Holy Hail (ACTH Recordings) or The Jai-Alai Savant (City Slang) of Major Taylor-Fame (the man that invented the Hollertronix-parties around Diplo from M.I.A.).

At a time when even Minimal-DJs and -fans are opening up to Dubstep and Bassline House it becomes evident that more and more clubbers and music-lovers are looking for a brand new sound, for thrillingly exotic line-up combinations and exciting up-to-date performances. Just listen to Simian Mobile Disco, the Klaxons, Justice, Uffie&Feadz, Switch, Sinden, Herve, Lady Sovereign or TTC and you’ll know what we are talking about - not to forget the media hype called “Nu Rave”. London, Berlin and many more places around the world are dancing already to a new wave of ecleticism and dancefloor-power and it keeps on spreading.
Shir Khan did a new mix for swedish musicblog DISCOBELLE as well as for Jonty Skruffs show on MINISTRY OF SOUND. Furthermore, Berlin new rave/ mash-up maestro Shir Khan chatted to Skrufff this week (8 June 2007 Skrufff-E #313) about the state of Berlin’s club scene and said that minimal techno continues to dominate the city’s musical landscape.
“It’s funny because everyone from the techno-minimal scene tells me that they hate minimal and they don’t want to hear it any more, then you go to those clubs like Arena Bar or Panorama Bar, maybe not so much Panorama, it’s not quite so minimal, but all those places that claim not to be minimal, when you go there it’s all minimal,” he laughed.
“Everyone’s telling me ‘minimal sucks’-you see T shirts saying ‘Kill Minimal’ it’s quite trendy to say minimal is out but it’s still actually really big.”
Carving out his own niche as a mash-up, then electroclash and now neu rave DJ, Khan is currently riding high on the white hot baile funk/ electro crossover, courtesy of his stunningly good remix of Bonde Do Role’s new single Office Boy, though stressed Berlin has still to catch up.
“Everyone talks about neu rave but I don’t think we actually have a scene in Berlin. You get parties where they try and imitate this style but I don’t think it’s really working out; you get parties with glow sticks and the new rave fashion side but people are really just trying to imitate it.
“In the intellectual press here new rave gets a lot of disrespect,” he added, “Its either just starting or maybe it’s even already been killed by the media because they’re saying the big fuss about neu rave has already gone, particularly in the UK.”
Shir Khan’s first official double-mix CD MAXIMIZE! is out September 14th on EXPLOITED.
