DJ Cosmo Baker, The Rub – Feeling Good

“Often times I’ll wake up in a certain mood and I’ll want to make a mix that will accompany me during the day. This is how the first “Love Break” came about – just a mix for me to listen to in my car during a road trip. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I woke up and it was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, the temperature was just right. It made me think of a certain sound that just means “spring/summer” to me, so before I headed out I made this mix to listen to while I ran around New York. There’s nothing like New York in the springtime.” DJ Cosmo Baker

Word from The Rapture – Dave Matthews, You Ain’t Got NO STYLE!

I attended In The City Yesterday, I left with some great thoughts to ponder, and was entertained by a few people in the industry, who don’t have a clue. Marc Geiger, and Tom Silverman, almost had a full on brawl during the Howl Panel. Listened in a bit while Tony Wilson interviewed David Massey, the President of Mercury. David broke Wang Chung when he was only 23, and somehow was able to wrangle managing 8 bands at one time, which I think, is quite impressive. He also broke The Killers, and explained how multiple labels passed them up, before he signed them on, and made them a massive success.

4:00 p.m.: The Howl Seminar:
Ralph Simon – Chairman Emeritus & Founder, Mobile Entertainment Forum – Americas
Marc Geiger – Sr V.P William Morris Agency, Ex-Vice Chairman & President ARTISTdirect Inc.
Tom Silverman – CEO & Founder, Tommy Boy Records
Ted Cohen – Head of Digital, EMI
Andy Gershon – SonyBMG
Patrick Moxey – Ultra Records

The “hot” panel of they day was the one listed below, where the panelists packed the room for a discussion that focused on pinpointing why music is seemingly better received in the UK than the U.S. It was a great discussion, no brawls, lots of laughs. Beyond the fashion implications put forth by Matt B Safer below, two stand out points seemed to be the sheer size of the US, as well as cultural differences. The U.S. has a massive film and fashion industry, where as, the UK does not. People in the U.S. focus on celebrity gossip and Star Magazine, and those in the UK, music/band gossip and NME. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s, manager Asif Ahmed pointed out that to stay relevant in the UK, you had to release a single every 3 weeks, while in the U.S, music had more staying power, and was less disposable.

Gabriel Andruzzi pointed out one reason for this was that most bands starting out, try to find their success, by making music that sounds like every other “hot” band of the moment. In his closing statement his advice to those trying to achieve and maintain success – “get out there and play a lot of shows, be good to YOUR band, and Be a good band.”

I believe him, he’s a wise dude, and being in The Rapture, he would know ; )

5:00 p.m.: Bring me your poor and huddled masses, and we’ll make stars of them and ship them back…
How to break your band in the UK:
Martin Heath – Lizard King Records
Jonathan Shalit – Shalit Global
Asif Ahmed – Schmanagement
Lesley Bleakley – Beggars Group
Mark Reiter – Q Prime
Mattie Safer – The Rapture
Gabriel Andruzzi – The Rapture
Steve Ferguson – Little Big Man

In the City kicks off in New York
The Rapture discuss their UK success
14.Jun.07 1:18am

In the City of New York kicked off today with a series of seminars at the W Hotel Union Square, including one featuring Mattie Safer and Gabriel Andruzzi of The Rapture.

At the seminar entitled ‘How To Break Your Band In The UK’, Safer discussed the relationship between the music scenes of New York and the UK.

“I think it’s more to do with not just the music, but the lifestyle and fashion. The music that gets big over there (the UK) is usually part of some big package, there’s a scene that’s associated with it, there’s a look that’s associated with it and New York is also a big fashion town, so there’s always trends happening.”

And Safer was quick to point out an example of an American band who enjoy massive success in the US, yet are relatively unknown across the pond.

“That’s why Dave Matthews Band doesn’t do well in the UK” he continued “Regardless of what you think about them – it’s horrible style. For me, I think that’s a lot of it, even just beyond musical taste.”

The conference is the first In the City to be held in New York. A two-day event, each night features performances by British bands. Happy Mondays were forced to cancel their show tonight due to visa issues, but openers Pigeon Detectives and The Rakes will go ahead with the show which has been relocated to the Knitting Factory.

Tomorrow night’s headliner is Biffy Clyro, with support from Enter Shikari and Blood Red Shoes.

Cee-lo, Outcast, & Crew Purchase Jimi Hendrix Masters

TM has some inside info that master recordings of the legendary Jim Hendrix were recently purchased, and are up for some sampling and reworking by members of the ATL hip hop community. The potential producers named for the project include the likes of Cee-Lo, members of Outcast, Danger Mouse, and Goodie Mob. Exactly who will be in on the final project is partial speculation, but also factually based, after having a conversation with the man behind the scenes, orchestrating the deal, on his recent trip to NY to purchase these bad ass masters. The entire process is being documented on film, and I assume, a documentary will follow, to coincide with the release of the music.

Teki Latex Takes It to the Streets

teki to the streets

Teki Latex, that sensible bastard of a Hip Hop MC with Renaissance man-like sensibilities, pulled some guerilla tactics to promote his single “Les Matins de Paris”, applying the French tradition of taking things to the streets with the whimsy of the song’s music video.

A couple weeks ago, this video began circulating on the web and all I could think when I saw it was “It’s on!”
Métro Etienne Marcel soyez au rendez-vous !

So some friends, another hundred new friends and myself met at the Etienne Marcel metro station on Saturday June 9 at 7pm, where we were led to another meetup point down the street. With an ice cream cart (modded to amplify tracks from Teki’s new album Party de Plaisir) in tow, the party’s ringleaders led us through the streets of Paris, making stops along the way to distribute candy and balloons.

Eventually, we ended up at the steps of hip pre-party spot Cafe de la Ville, greeted by Teki, his bullhorn and a couple turntables on which he began to play.

Here’s what Teki had to say about the party…

waxyjax: How did you come up with the idea to throw a street party?

Teki Latex: I didn’t really throw it, the record company and a company called “wombat” did..One of my friends was fooling around with billboards from one of our releases, that gave me the idea of getting people to walk around paris with giant promotional boards on their body, giving out flyers and stickers and stuff. I told the record company “instead of spending money on a big street marketing campaign that’s gonna last one night with boards and stickers that are gonna be either taken off by random people or covered by someone else’s ads the next day, why don’t we do some sort of huge teki latex demonstration in the streets with “homme sandwiches” and stuff like that”. So they called this street marketing company called wombat and that was that.

wj: Why did you choose Les Matins de Paris as the theme?

TL: It’s the single! You mean why did i choose it as a theme for my single? I think it’s a very romantic thing and it evokes very precise images in people’s heads.

wj: Who tricked out that ice cream cart?

TL: Just learned about the ice cream cart while watching your amazing pics.

wj: Are you cooking up any other parties like this?

TL: Not for the moment but this one worked so well, maybe we can do it again under another form sometime. I’m cooking up a great release party for my album at le parisparis tonight though.

wj: Party de Plasir is quite a departure from TTC. Is there a chance the album’s production style or your singing abilities will appear on a future TTC release?

TL: Well hints of it kind of appeared on the last 2 ttc albums, I’m kind of crooning on more and more TTC tracks but i think TTC will remain a hiphop/dance/avantgarde project and I can keep doing my pop/crooning/disco thing on the side.

wj: Congratulations on the success of Institubes and on your solo debut. What’s next on the agenda?

TL: Thank you! We’re still touring with TTC until september, then I guess I’m gonna start touring for my solo stuff. Institubes are dropping mad releases this year, a new surkin single (and hopefully his first album), a beautiful drum-less synth based album by para one which is actually the score for the film “naissance des pieuvres”, a para one live album, mad stuff from midnight juggernauts, bobmo, cuizinier and amazing french rap group “so fresh squad.”

Kanye Samples Daft Punk & Books Shiny Toy Guns

IF YOU CAN’T BEAT’EM, JOIN’EM

This whole thing is very interesting to me.

I’m not sure what I think. Kanye makes some dope beats, I won’t deny that, but after he stormed the stage when Justice won video of the year, I lost a bit of respect for him. The move to team up with Daft kinda makes the word “toolbox” come to mind, even though its definitely a smart move. I wonder if when Kanye went to clear the sample, Daft took over the negotiation and said “DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT’S GONNA COST”?!?!?!

Kanye had a party here in New York at Louis Vuitton, on Wednesday. He asked The Rapture to play, but they were booked, so Shiny Toys Guns played the show. He told synth & bass player, Jeremy Dawson, they were one if his favorite bands.

Hmmmmm . . . .

THERE A WHOLE LOT OF INFLUENCING GOING AROUND

The second thing that catches my attention is the Chicago/French/Hip Hop/House connection. 5 years ago, Puffy had a whole bunch of Chicago House producers making beats for him, Mike Dunn, being one, and Kayne would swing thru the studio from time to time.

In that same building, Ron Carroll, Mazi, and Van Christie, all had studios, right next door in fact. Ron Carroll and Mazi actually produced a track together called “Stronger”, which was release on Afterhours. Prior to that, they did production on a single called “Lucky Star” that was released by the group Superfunk. I was originally on Fiat Lux, but got picked up by Virgin and it went on to sell over a million copies. This then launched Ron into super star status in Europe, and we didn’t see him for awhile, he pretty much went on tour for a year.

Funny thing about that track, Fiat Lux sent it to Mazi, and asked him if he could get someone to to do the vocals. Mazi had Ron give it a listen, and 10 minutes later, Ron had the song written, and laid down the vocals in one take.

Anyway, I am dying to hear how this Kanye/Daft track came out, so if anyone gets a leak, i’m all ears.

DJ MAG

“In an extraordinary move, America’s premier hip-hop uber-producer Kanye West has been bitten by the house bug and hooked up with Daft Punk to crank out an electro disco cut entitled ‘Stronger’.

DJMag cornered him in Las Vegas at the weekend, quizzing him on his upbringing in Chicago and whether the city’s house music scene has ever been an influence. He enigmatically hinted at a new house-style tune in his repertoire.

“The next single I’m dropping really has a house feel,” Kanye revealed. “It has a four four beat, one half of the song has, and the other half is my type of drums so I mixed it up. You’ll definitely see that influence on it.”

DJMag had a chance to check out the track at an exclusive Kanye West live performance, which was part of Heineken’s Thirst Studio Global Sessions contest. Taking place in Vegas over the bank holiday weekend, the competition set out to determine the best new producers on the planet.

As a hugely successful and original producer himself, Kanye was asked to appear live, and didn’t disappoint, with a truly electrifying and charismatic performance in which he dropped ‘Stronger’ — the track busting out of the speakers like a particularly virulent strain of Ed Banger electro filth and classic hip-hop.

Tentatively scheduled for release on 1st June, ‘Stronger’ will be the first single from West’s forthcoming ‘Graduation’ album — the final part of his college-related trilogy after ‘The College Dropout’ and ‘Late Registration’. It samples heavily from Daft Punk’s classic track ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’, from their sophomore LP ‘Discovery’.

Daft Punk have given their blessing to West’s use of the track, with the funky cyborgs even appearing alongside the rapper in his forthcoming video, fully decked out in those distinctive helmets. The hook-up certainly bodes well for more electro and house collaborations between rappers and dancefloor producers in the future.”
