Mike Dextro is Bulletproof

Brooklyn-based DJ/Producer Mike Dextro is not easily categorized. It’s hard to pinpoint the sound of someone whom the L Magazine dubbed as “an early Ministry scholar”, who flexed his hip hop knowledge working at Rawkus Records, whose DJ gigs placed him next to the likes of like Drop the Lime, The Glass, Ulysess and Todd Sines (to name a few) and in front of a variety of crowds–from underground techno heads, to Lower East Side weekend warriors, Russian estrada dolls to Italo disco dollies, from electro-rockers to (E)d bangers.
Bulletproof–his latest tune–is no exception. Thanks to an inventively campy approach to mingling electro and acid sounds, a Debarge sample and a Schaffel breakdown, the song feels the way a robot donning 80s-style shoulder pads and a Jerry Curl might look. Of course, for someone whose hip hop track ended up in the dj set of none other than Andy Rourke (of The Smiths), it’s no surprise that you might hear Bulletproof in the most unlikely of places.
For more Mike Dextro, check out his monthly residency at Heroine Chic (1st Thursdays at Galapagos). Watch out for the remix of Bulletproof by Alexander Bassett, of Chicago’s Anodyne Electric Company.
